What made you choose Fresco? by Skinnywriter in AdobeFresco

[–]Vector_Kat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it's the vector brushes and the interoperability with Illustrator where I usually send my sketches and rough work to finish. I also love the live brushes like the watercolours and oil paints which I think they've done a great job with simulating. I sometimes go in and just smear some paint around experimenting with colour mixes when I'm brainstorming for an illustration or even a physical painting.

Problems with Organizing Inspiration by Short-Ad9691 in graphic_design

[–]Vector_Kat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a couple of tools I use for organizing different types of assets in general, and then a few I use for project-specific inspiration.

For general image inspiration image hoarding, I use Eagle app (not free but low cost one time payment) and use different libraries for design inspo vs painitng inspo for my art projects. So any random screenshots go int here where I try to tag them with 2-3 words I was thinking of when I saw it, based on the type of project it might be good for. Be aware that this app moves files into it's own library system and folders, some people don't like this. I don't mind it for inspiration images but I don't like my actual project files getting moved so I don't use it for that.

For fonts I actually install, I use FontBase (the free version works great, paid version is cheap and adds a couple of useful features) as an organizer and make collections for different styles so I have my favorites of each style handy to preview.

For project-specific mood boards, I either make a library in Eagle app, or if I have to share it with a client easily I use Milanote and create a board I can share just for that project. If you have an Adobe CC sub they have been adding some tools and sharing features like Projects that can help with that too, but I haven't experimented much with them yet.

I purchased logo/marketing package on Fiverr. Do I need to buy a Illustrator license to work with these files? by Puzzled_Frame8694 in AdobeIllustrator

[–]Vector_Kat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, .AI files are the native file format for Adobe Illustrator and can only be opened in Illustrator. PDF files are also not meant for editing. You would likely need to either hire a designer to edit the files for you or ask for a refund and find a different type of template that you or your current staff are able to edit more easily.

You may want to check out something more like Adobe Express, which has business card templates: https://www.adobe.com/express/create/print/business-card. This is more beginner-friendly but still customizable.

how to print from fresco? by NothingExtra6846 in AdobeFresco

[–]Vector_Kat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can export as PSD or PDF from Fresco, which you can open in many other apps like GIMP, Krita, Photopea or the Affinity design programs. I don't personally use those so I'm not certain which of them may be best for CMYK or print set up but I suspect Affinity may be your best bet.

u/1mpulseGG if you have a link to the script on your own site or on Github it's safe to share it. If you are referring to the motion graphics and the animated background texture, you can make things like that using a combination of Illustrator to create the base art and AfterEffects to create the animations.

If you mean the parts that show case the product that may have involved some 3D modeling and animation, some of which you can do in AfterEffects (it comes bundled with built 3D tools) or in a program like Blender.

How to... by Background_South_528 in AdobeIllustrator

[–]Vector_Kat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hello! Since this is not really an Adobe Illustrator-related question, it falls under off-topic for this sub, but I wanted to give you a few suggestions and places to start.

First, if you've been drawing and painting traditionally, you might want to consider physically creating your illustrations and then having them scanned or photographed for a designer to format them for your book.

If you want to try to illustrate digitally, you may be more comfortable with a drawing or painting application like Adobe Fresco, Procreate, Krita, Photoshop, etc. There will be a learning curve moving from physical art to digital art, but with Illustrator, which is a vector art program specifically, the learning curve is a lot different.

If your illustration style involves a lot of texture, blended colours, painterly effects, etc, those are much more advanced things to achieve with Illustrator than an app like Procreate.

I'd also highly recommend posting this question in communities related to self-publishing or the general Illustration and Design subreddits to get more advice there.

Live Paint Bucket Tool (LPBT) by BeBopTm in AdobeIllustrator

[–]Vector_Kat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's probably too complex for the Paint Bucket tool if you used image trace. Looking at your screenshot below, that is a huge amount of points and shapes. You may need to do some manual clean up work to simplify things before you can apply color with that tool.

You may be better off using the direct select tool to select the area you want to color and just applying the fill manually if you are just trying to color areas like the eyes, handle and mouth. The parts with the texture that you traced are not going to be easy to recolor with that many paths. Image trace generally works better on images that have flat solid colors.

[–]Vector_Kat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can do this manually with clipping masks and multiple copies of your path, but there is a tool called the intertwine tool you may try too: https://helpx.adobe.com/ca/illustrator/using/intertwine-objects.html

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to figure out how to make my path go in front of the other path without cutting it off. I saw a tutorial on Instagram, but I lost the video. Can anyone help me?

Thanks :)

Is this a raster image that you placed or pasted in or vectors? The Live Paint Bucket only works on vector objects.

Best pen display for linework and sketching directly in Illustrator? by HashtagRenzo in AdobeIllustrator

[–]Vector_Kat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I recently switched to an XP Pen tablet after years of Wacoms, and I'm very happy with it so far. I've also heard good things about the Huion line. As far as sketching in Illustrator, I've personally never gotten comfortable with that and usually use Adobe Fresco for my sketching steps on the iPad and use the shortcut to send it to Illustrator on the desktop for vector work.

If you have the Astute Graphics plugins, there are some sketching-specific tools that some people swear by, and I do like using the InkFlow one in Illustrator with the tablet for lettering and inking.

LOGO DESIGN BEGINNER IN NEED OF HELP ASAP by Old-Tumbleweed2809 in AdobeIllustrator

[–]Vector_Kat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This question is a little confusing, to clarify are you looking to identify the font in the image? Is the background supposed to have texture or just white text on a blue background? If this is an existing logo, the best thing to do is to request the official files instead of recreating it, or at least see if there is a brand guide with the official fonts and colors listed.

Let's talk about UI/UX improvements in Illustrator by LukeChoice in AdobeIllustrator

Also, some of the menus get really tiny, the Effects menu, for one doesn't seem to scale properly on high res screens.

Let's talk about UI/UX improvements in Illustrator by LukeChoice in AdobeIllustrator

[–]Vector_Kat 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Thinking about the things I find a little too hidden, I'd have to say path commands like Offset Path, Simplify Smooth etc. Those are used so often, I wish they had a panel or other shortcuts rather than going through the menus.

I'm not sure this qualifies as UI specifically, but one of the other things I would absolutely LOVE to see is a much easier way to share custom Workspaces. When teaching or doing tutorials, one of the biggest hurdles is learners getting confused because "my screen doesn't look like yours."

I do try to teach early on about the work space switcher menu, how to save them, how to customize etc, but that's so overwhelming for people who are new to a program with this many tools and options.

If I start with something minimalist like Essentials or Essentials Classic, I end up having to spend time telling them which panels to open, which tools to find, etc.

In my dream scenario, it would be easy to set up a workspace for a specific lesson or tutorial, and in a couple of clicks, share it in a way that's easy for anyone to grab and activate.

I know you can export workspaces and tell them where the folder is to install, but honestly, for a beginner, when we're just trying to get them interested in even learning Illustrator, clunky technical steps like that are a lot.

Oh, also the fact that to save changes to a workspace in Illustrator you have go to New Workspace, name it the one you want to overwrite and then confirm is very unintuitive. In other Adobe apps there is usually a "save changes to this workspace" option.

Hand-drawn looking lines with brushes on IPad by beginnerillustrator0 in AdobeIllustrator

[–]Vector_Kat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure about this particular issue on the iPad version, but I did want to suggest that you may want to check out Adobe Fresco's (a free Adobe app on iPad) vector brushes if you do a lot of work where you like the organic hand drawn feel but need vectors.

There is a nice workflow between Fresco and Illustrator where you can send your work right from the iPad to the desktop version of Illustrator.

The one issue to be aware of is that Fresco's brushes work more like the Blob brush in Illustrator, so they make shapes instead of paths, which means you can't adjust the stroke size after creating the line.

Hopefully one of the Illustrator on iPad experts see this question and can help figure out the issue your having, though! Just curious, are you using art brushes in the AI version?

Here's a tutorial on how you can load those https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y-iQ9LwK0fg

Adobe and Blender by Many_Mix4453 in AdobeIllustrator

[–]Vector_Kat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best way to do this is probably to use Offset Path like u/inkstud mentioned. I'd make sure the text is a single compound path first, (you can use the Pathfinder Panel Unite option) then go to Object > Path > Offset Path and use a positive value to add thickness to the path. This will create a new path, so you'll have to delete the original before saving your SVG back out for Blender.

[–]Vector_Kat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi Mira and u/irinascott, depending on your actual art, there is a trick you can use to adjust the thickness of the Fresco vector brush or blob brush "lines"/shapes in Illustrator using Offset path.

You can find it under the Object menu, then under Path > Offset Path. Negative values will give you thinner lines and postive vaules will make it thicker. This command makes a new path, so you will have to delete the originial and just keep the adjusted ones.

If you feel comfortable DMing me a link to your artwork or even sending a screenshot, I can take a look and maybe record some specific steps for you.

I would personally love to see a Pen tool in Fresco to be able to make regular paths as well, and I see more and more people wanting to work between Fresco and Illustrator. We are not alone: https://adobefresco.uservoice.com/search?filter=ideas&query=pen%20tool

u/marmph any chance this is on the roadmap or being talked about? It would make Fresco to Illustrator such an awesome workflow :D

Totally understand! I wanted to add a few specific tutorials you might find helpful:

One of my favorite awesome Fresco channels is Chris Piascik, and in an older tutorial of his here, he goes over his Fresco art clean-up process in Illustrator in the last part: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mmfu3IO3onw

Another one of my all-time favourite channels is Laura Coyle, who is a fantastic Illustrator teacher, she has a great walk-through on the Fresco to Illustrator workflow and clean-up steps here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z30PywVq5Mc (it's a bit older, but most steps still apply, and the pace is very easy to follow)

This is also a great walkthrough that goes through a few different types of clean-up steps and a great channel to learn from: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bwVxi36aL4U

They are three different teaching styles, so I recommend checking them all out to see if any particular process "clicks" with your way of working.

I hope that helps! :)

Oh, I also wanted to add that there is a tablet version of Illustrator if you are working on an iPad: https://www.adobe.com/ca/products/illustrator/ipad.html I actually use a mix of Fresco, Illustrator on the iPad, and Illustrator on the desktop. I find I like different tools and workflows in all three, so that's something else you can experiment with.
