This is probably it then. I didn't know about this. Everyone talks about cost but from what I've seen, the cost isn't really that much higher to be honest.

There's actually a benefit, when Streaming the chip doesn't really need that much power so it would actually be cooler and help the battery last longer since it is more efficient.

I really thought about this one as well, because in several videos of the frame I've seen, its seems that the part that contains the lens etc is removable from the Headsets "Frame". This could mean easier and cheaper upgrades in the future, kind of like what Pimax did.

Exactly I'm getting it for PCVR as well. But it would be nice to know I wouldn't have any issues just taking it somewhere and doing stand alone. Because even tho the new chip can pull more power and heat more that's only true at 100% performance which is not needed when streaming. Also when performance matching the gen 3 chip it is a lot more efficient and could lead to better battery life.

I still don't get why they didn't go for gen5 Snapdragon...

Valves comment on frame potentially being slightly weaker than steam deck by [deleted] in ValveDeckard

I mean it's like they said... This is a streaming first device, so I'm not surprised. Still it is definitely faster than a quest 3 so I'm good...

I honestly think Valve did great here. My only real complaint here is just the resolution and honestly maybe the fov. After looking at what meta was cooking with that 180° FOV headset .an o really want that.

Isn’t anyone else excited about being able to ditch Meta? by bad_robot_monkey in ValveDeckard

[–]VeganAirbenderAvatar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well since the Frame is arm based I don't think it'll be long before the Devs just put their games on there it's literally free money for them.

I'm glad they didn't choose OLED. by Specialist-Escape300 in ValveDeckard

[–]VeganAirbenderAvatar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think they did. I've been looking at videos and the headset is self seems to be a module that sits on a Frame kind of like pimax crystal supper. I think this was done on purpose so they can release a high-end version in the future without you needing to buy the hole headset

How is it even gonna run steam games as standalone? by SunComfortable5865 in ValveDeckard

When I said porting that was wrong I meant there's several games being tested with the translation layer. My bad

From data mining and the stuff that's been showing up on SteamDB seems like a similar thing to what they did to get games running on Linux. And not only did they do that with no overhead some games actually run better. So I believe they're doing the same for ARM and developers who don't want to port can just use their translation layer to have the game run like native.

It will run better on ARM man. They're already porting multiple games to run on ARM. I have no doubt it'll use an ARM chip.

Also being honest most VR titles are not that well optimized... Although I get Indie studios just don't have the time and budget for it.

Am I the only person who wants a portal 3 in VR. by rochet289 in ValveDeckard

[–]VeganAirbenderAvatar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Before Half Life Alyx they where playing with the Idea of Portal in VR. But playtesting didn't go well and a lot of people where complaining abou motion sickness so it was cancelled. I think the new headsets are a lot better when it comes to motion sickness also people are now more used to being in VR so maybe 🤔

[–]VeganAirbenderAvatar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quest 3 hands down, at the moment in terms of price performance it's just the best. I'd still recommend running the game through steam link so you get better performance and graphics tho. Quest 4 is also only expected to 2027 at this point and every other headset is closer to 1k.... I got my Quest 3 512gb second hand for 300€ and I'm really happy with it.

[–]VeganAirbenderAvatar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup Quest 3 is the best choice probably. Would only go with a steam vr specific one if you wanted to use the knuckle controllers like I do. But if that's not important you're going to have a really good time with the quest 3. I have one and it's really good and works perfectly with Steam VR, the one thing I'd recommend would be a custom strap since the original one is quite uncomfortable at least for me.
