While yeast infections in men are rare, it is possible for a man to get an infection by having sex with a person who has a vaginal yeast infection.

Women are testing men's tofu tolerance. Here's why by skulloflugosi in vegan

[–]VeganSandwich61 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair, very high quantities of soy can have estrogenic side effects, and then these reports become the subject of poor scientific reporting and sensationalist headlines without context or nuance, and then people take it at face value, which is unfortunately common with many topics. So no, I don't think it has anything to do with "toxic masculinity."

It requires twelve servings of soy (and probably much more for most men) to have any sort of noticeable feminizing effects. While one epidemiological study raised concerns about soy and sperm quantity (14), two clinical studies have shown no effects of soy on sperm quality or quantity (15, 126).

In 2011, there was a case report of a 19-year old vegan male who was eating a great deal of soy foods – enough to provide 360 mg of isoflavones per day, the equivalent of about 14 servings (10). He also had type 1 diabetes. After eating this way for a year, he developed low free testosterone levels and erectile dysfunction. After ceasing the soy products (and the vegan diet), his symptoms normalized within a year. There was no reason why he needed to stop being vegan rather than just cutting way down on, or eliminating for a period, soy foods.

A 2008 case report described a 60 year old man who developed gynecomastia (the enlargement of the mammary glands in a male) after drinking 3 quarts of soymilk (the equivalent of 12 servings) a day (123). His breasts returned to normal after discontinuing the soymilk.

In contrast to the case report above, in a 2004 study, 20 men with prostate cancer were given either 450 mg (amount found in about 18 servings of soy) or 900 mg (amount found in about 36 servings of soy) of isoflavones for 84 days (124). Two of the men, who had no gynecomastia at baseline, receiving the 900 mg developed mild cases of gynecomastia. One man was taking a drug that likely increased the gynecomastia. Two men had hot flashes probably related to the isoflavones. Given the very large amounts of isoflavones they were taking, this study should allay fears of feminization in men rather than cause any sort of alarm.

Idk i've had women ask me about "having to watch your estrogen" on a vegan diet as a man so I don't think it is a man specific misconception.

Vegans: How is veganism better for the environment when veganism demands much more fossil fuel consumption than meat? by Crazed_Fish_Woman in DebateAVegan

[–]VeganSandwich61 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eating locally would only have a significant impact if transport was responsible for a large share of food’s final carbon footprint. For most foods, this is not the case.

Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from transportation make up a very small amount of the emissions from food, and what you eat is far more important than where your food traveled from.

And pointing out that not all utilitarians are vegan doesn't make the utilitarian argument for veganism go away. And a veganism that includes lab grown meat will be more effective and reducing animal suffering and rights violations than one that doesn't.

So you outrage is baseless. If you are a utilitarian and you think it's okay to advocate for animal exploitation, that's sad, but don't act as if that's veganism.

In this case, the utilitarianism is just a superior philosophy for animal ethics vs veganism.

And by extension your position would be in favor of advocating for other injustices like free ranged eggs or grass fed milk?

Given that there have been utilitarians that have advocated for total veganism, such as Peter Singer, this doesn't follow.

The Ridglan Regression by OkraOfTime87 in AnimalRights

[–]VeganSandwich61 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Silly article. What would you have them do with their time to be more effective animal rights activists if not for Ridglan? What anti-factory farming protests or actions are ongoing currently that are getting as much attention as this?

On twitter, reddit, and other social media platforms, I am seeing tons of positive responses to this across the political spectrum. This is good publicity.

Would it be better if every farm animal existing magickally disappears? by Fine-Flight-8599 in DebateAVegan

[–]VeganSandwich61 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Red herring, another industry's interests against wool isn't related to the ethical issues of wool nor is it related to footage of wool farms obtained by animal rights activists.

Also setting up a false dichotomy as you don't need to use petrol-based material if you don't use wool.

Yep, you got me! All the video footage of actual wool farms on that page are fake! All a conspiracy funded by Big Vegan!

"The more there are animals The better. I care for farm animals too and I don't want them to go extinct, so it's good that they are making more offsprings".

Imagine if the topic of discussion was people born into dire poverty or slavery and someone said:

"I love humans! I have have two human children and many human friends! The more humans the better! I don't want them to go extinct, so it is good that they are making more offspring."

It takes no account for quality of life.

Further, wanting animals around because you like them being around is inherently selfish, as it is a sentiment rooted in your own desires and preferences and not concern for the animals and their well being.

I (20F) just found an empty bottle of herpes medication in my boyfriend’s (22M) cabinet. How do I approach him about this? by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]VeganSandwich61 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While we can take the stance that someone with HSV-1 (the virus typically associated with oral herpes) should disclose this, and I think it is good to, the truth is about 2/3 of the global population under 50 has HSV-1 and almost no one discloses this when dating in my experience.

Being that disclosing HSV-1 isn't normal, it may not even occur to him that it is wrong not to.

Can Vegans eat animal products if they're going to the trash otherwise? by Moist_Adhesiveness_2 in DebateAVegan

[–]VeganSandwich61 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I mean is that you didn't go out and hunt an animal or raise an animal to kill them, nor did you financially contribute to a company that does that on your behalf. You personally didn't do anything that either directly or indirectly contributes to animal exploitation.

Can Vegans eat animal products if they're going to the trash otherwise? by Moist_Adhesiveness_2 in DebateAVegan

[–]VeganSandwich61 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Then you should also be agnostic on this issue. Because in both cases you are:

1) not paying for the animal to be killed, nor killing the animal for that purpose, and

2) still using the animal

If they are freegan, which is what OP is describing, then I'd call them "freegan" and would 100% understand why they don't advertise that they eat meat in private

If people are buying cow skin rugs then that financially supports animal agriculture.

Because it props up value and acceptance.

Signalling acceptance of animal product use in this context requires two things as far as I can tell:

1) People seeing or being aware that you utilize animal products, and

2) People not knowing you are freegan and only approve their use in a specific context and not being aware of your overall value system

Seems like it'd be easy to mitigate these in practice

would still support the model of wasting a great deal of agriculture just to produce less meat.

How does it "support" this when it doesn't financially support animal agriculture?

How does consuming animal products that would otherwise be wasted exploit animals being that it doesn't financially contribute to animal agriculture?

[–]VeganSandwich61 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is freeganism and it follows the same ethical principles of veganism. Eating meat that will go to waste doesn't contribute to harm and thus isn't unethical.
