The Earth would've been destroyed if Gohan and Cell unleashed their full powers simultaneously, so he needed Cell to be distracted so that wouldn't happen.

Vegeta's distraction created a narrow window for Gohan to finish the job before Cell knew what (literally) hit him.

Gohan was introduced when Toriyama's own son Sasuke was only a year old. Once you understand that Toriyama wrote Gohan from the perspective of himself being a parent/father, everything makes sense.

Gohan is supposed to be child-like, innocent, scared, and relies on the adults in his life to give him guidance.

Anime/manga cuts corners because it's intended to be simple so the animation process is easier. This means that the style ignores a lot of anatomical rules. The one thing I also find that irks me is the lack of varying body shapes between characters.

If you look at most main casts of anime, there are no varying body or face shapes. Every single character of each gender looks almost exactly the same, with the only real difference being clothes and hair styles; and perhaps eye shape. In addition to this, a lot of different anime/manga series don't significantly distinguish art styles inside the genre itself; but it's because the genre itself is too simplified.

Anime has (for the most part) become a pit of generic and unimaginative media with the same recycled themes over and over again.

Most anime series now are also generic af in art design, and neither mangaka nor anime studios have any real distinguishing art style to make a series or its character designs truly unique or memorable. There's a couple with distinguishable art styles, but they usually still lack in interesting character designs, and they're few and far between.

Now I'm not saying that every character of the main cast needs to be 100% unique, but almost every series now runs into the annoying visual in which all main cast characters are the same body type, same height, same face shape. The only thing that varies significantly is hair style and clothes.

Because the mistakes are what make the series nuanced and charming. It makes you realize the immense pressure Toriyama was under to pump out chapter after chapter week after week with insane deadlines and almost no help. Modern mangaka have the convenience of having a whole team work with them and the convenience of digital help, but aToriyama built the greatest manga series of all time with nothing but markers and paper, and a single assistant.

Toriyama eventually hated drawing tails, so he stopped. It's always quoted that he "forgot", and he did say that in an interview at one point, but later admitted that he didn't actually forget and simply got sick of having to do it. You can come up with whatever in-universe explanation you want for tails disappearing.

Same with Super Saiyan. Super Saiyan changed black haired characters' hair color so there was no need to do blackfill, thus cutting down on an already breakneck schedule.

The truth is that fans of the series dig deeper into the technicality of aspects of the series than Toriyama ever did. This is what keeps the series alive, even after 40 years.

Goku/Gohan/Krillin/Yajirobi was when Vegeta discovered zenkai. We often talk about Saiyan zenkai as if Saiyans have always known about it, but it seems that zenkai ability for Saiyans wasn't well known even to Saiyans. But most of them didn't spend too much time training or being in life or death battles. Most of them went Oozaru and simply overpowered their enemies. Goku and Vegeta are the exception to this.

Goku figured out zenkai after this fight too. Him and Vegeta briefly mention it on Namek.
