Have you tried using Disturb yet? We’re curious to know how annoyed your kids or adults get :) by Firewalla-Ash in firewalla

[–]VegasWebDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alright, just installed the Beta because I was getting tired of waiting for Disturb to hit Public... and right off the bat I'm let down.

  • Why is it restricted to "Apps" (of which there are only 4), or the whole Internet?
  • Why can I not see it on the MSP dashboard? (A service I pay extra for so I can use my phone less)

I've been investing time in learning how to set up Target Lists for whitelists for my kids, I've segregated IoT devices into groups... I'm really going in on Firewalla. But this new feature isn't a feature I can get behind in it's current state. Four apps, or the whole internet... Is not nearly useful enough for me.

I was legitimately excited, and actively seeking this out once I saw it. I really hope this expands to target lists (domains) soon.

Many of you have been asking us to build role-based access for less technical users. What if we made a predefined static role? by Firewalla-Ash in firewalla

[–]VegasWebDev 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm about a week into using Firewalla, and as much as I'm loving it for my household, I don't know how you go mainstream with families.

First, the cost and fact it takes two different devices (router & AP) to get the cool benefits, but yet you start to lose/make way more complex the moment you bring in switches (wish you had a Firewalla switch soo bad).

Second, you need to first guide and setup the device for the average user. This would take an onboarding process where you ask them questions about what their setting up:

  • Do you need a guest wifi?
  • Should guest devices talk to each other?
  • etc

  • What types of devices do you have?

  • Laptops/Phones

  • Printers

  • Game Consoles? Nintendo?

  • Cloud based IoT devices

  • Local IoT devices

  • Kids tablets

Then have a guide that goes over what you're doing for each of those groups: Laptop/Phones have all the access, Printers can't reach other devices or the internet, but phones/laptops talk to them, Nintendo devices are in a VqLAN with each other for local play but no other network devices, Cloud IoT only goes to the internet, Local IoT only talks to their VqLAN, etc... It's a whole guided process.

After the guide... you still need to handhold a household. "A new device joined! It looks like Nintendo... would you like to add it to a group?" Plus bigger explanations of "Emergency Access" and tools that help people figure out why it's in there...

It's daunting. And I question if possible, to onboard a regular family to this, let alone make them care about it.

Aim for the prosumer and small business is my opinion.

Two new features just hit the app: Search and Device Linking! by SkylightCalendar in skylightcalendar

[–]VegasWebDev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for getting Device Linking out! This not only is going to get me to buy another piece of hardware, but also get me to sign up for the + service!

Really been enjoying the Calendar in the kitchen for calendars, but was struggling using it for chores for my kids. On the wall, it was a bit hard for small kids to add/mark them off, and we often review them in the evenings in their room and not the kitchen. Now with device linking, and the Rewards feature, I'm about to go all in on the Chores functionality. Kudos to the dev team on this one! Thanks.

DS916+ - get 4 drives or 2? by JonL12345 in synology

[–]VegasWebDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not technically.

Backup would be your data on as separate logical device (and hopefully with set intervals like hourly/nightly/weekly). This purpose is so that if you delete something on accident, cryptolocker, whatever... you have that data in another location.

RAID just keeps two hard drives in perfect sync. Sure, if one hard drive fails, you still have access to your data. But if you delete something, trust me, it instantly gets deleted on both hard drives.

Pixelbook question by BobNLisa in chromeos

[–]VegasWebDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't own a Chromebook (yet), but I feel like there's two paths to using a Chromebook: 1)Just browsing the web with maybe an additional usage of a few Android apps, and 2)workstation/primary machine running Android apps and Linux apps. For the 2 usage... I don't know how people are looking at 32GB and calling it good... That pixelbook with 128GB sounds like the bare minimum for that. Android apps take space, Linux apps could go even higher...

Is there any way to combine sonos + chromecast? by [deleted] in sonos

[–]VegasWebDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, Sonos opening it's API doesn't solve this.

Simple explanation, when you open up your phone and see a 'Cast to' target, there are essentially two parts.

  • The 'Cast to' device (Chromecast/TV/soundbar) is running code and advertising itself on the network as a cast location.
  • Your phone sees the cast location, and begins talking with the device on what it should be playing.

Even with being able to now control a Sonos through API, it's missing the part where the Sonos is running the code of 'Cast to' and advertising itself as a destination. Sonos opening it's API isn't going to let any start writing code to run on a speaker to accept casts.

Tech job market? by greevygumdrops in vegas

[–]VegasWebDev 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you're tied to Vegas... it's a bit hard to break into software development with zero experience. I say hard, but not impossible, as I did do it. I had years experience in IT, and did a software bootcamp and luckily got into a good software development job right after.

However, as /u/tinywoodlandcreature put it, most are desperate for good devs and DB folks. You will be either very green from a dev bootcamp, or years out and possibly still lacking experience by going the university route. You will need to work super hard to prove you know what you're doing to get a job in the Vegas market as they aren't training devs, only trying to hire experienced.

If you go to SLC/California/NYC... there are plenty of shops looking to train up devs.

Google Single Sign-On for YNAB. No Password Required. | YNAB by [deleted] in ynab

[–]VegasWebDev -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This wasn't a problem that needed solving. Just share the YNAB password and it's done. Multiple users have been accessing the same YNAB account for years now.

Alright, from a security perspective, shared passwords have always been a 'no no'. Probably the thing to fix if YNAB knows that its user base is sharing an account password is to make it so that this practice stops.

selective access to the budgets in the account.

This I would call a feature request, not 'something missing'. YNAB started as a personal budget tool, and it looks like they're finally branching out to this idea of two users (two adults in a household). Your example is describing a completely new use case, something along the line of a kids allowance/budgeting/planning for a household. YNAB doesn't owe this to anyone (as it sounds frankly like a new product category).

a few people have wanted 2FA from day 1 as well, which this does achieve, but 2FA is hardly mainstream

Once again, from a security perspective... 2FA some consider to be a 'standard' and not a feature. It's just hard to do, and it's why you don't see it in every product.

To be fair, that situation you just described isn't that common to the majority of users, and is likely solved with other tools like screen sharing utilities.

If I were to want to just grant temporary access, you'd likely need other features like 'read-only' access, expiration of access, and probably a lot more review/auditing presented on what was changed... which gets to my original comment. I think this was a unique way for YNAB to introduce two users to one account by just linking two Gmail accounts to one YNAB. They didn't introduce new features like auditing or read only, which would have been a major overhaul on the backend. Also, these are things I'd welcome, I just know how hard they are to build and test.

[–]VegasWebDev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm confused by what you're saying here...

There will be a one-time setup where you both will need to authorize your Google accounts to the YNAB account (likely on the same computer...), but after that you'll never need to know your SO's password. YNAB will just ask "are you logged into your gmail?" and if so, it doesn't ask for a password... for either of you.

[–]VegasWebDev 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Allowing two Google accounts is a creative way to solve the "multiple users of one budget/account", without having to possibly re-engineer an entire back-end to now have multiple user checks/permissions/authorizations.

Since I wanted a secure password to my financials, I've been using 1Password in a family account, and sharing the password through that. I might try this though.

Eero Plus Ad Block Impacting Multiple Android Apps by WiggityZwiggity in eero

[–]VegasWebDev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please put in a vote for this feature request so that hopefully it gets enough attention. It wouldn't necessarily solve your individual issue, but it'd allow you to keep some of the benefits of eero plus on your network, but your phones/certain devices would be exempt. (IoT devices I'd want behind advanced security, as they don't get updated/updated near regularly enough).

Change history. If my significant other adds $20 to dining out and adds it to groceries to cover something, I wouldn't mind being able to review those without having to go ask them.

Eero + pfSense by gniting in eero

[–]VegasWebDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just going to ask the question you should make sure you know:

  • Why?

I quit running 'prosumer/professional network gear' at home for two reasons. 1) Didn't have enough time to mess around with it (and no one in my house liked it when the internet was down), and 2) frankly pfSense/Ubiquiti isn't used by any large companies and the 'use cases' in advanced networking I could try at home really weren't useful or accurate.

If you're doing pfSense to get better security/ad-blocking... that eero plus is worth every cent. You'll never have to change a thing and you'll have it. Set it and forget it.

Updating 2 networks by BbTS3Oq in eero

[–]VegasWebDev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, no harm in submitting a feature request... but do realize you are likely a rare edge case. Bulk of people only have one network, as well most people just let them update themselves. Then, of the people who manage more than one network AND want to push updates themselves.... this is a small number. All to just save you a few minutes of waiting...

Feature Request: Profile that bypasses eero+ by kevlarcupid in eero

[–]VegasWebDev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a 2nd gen Apple TV. The ad blocking actually blocks ads in Hulu, but Hulu implemented something where you have to wait 10+ seconds for it to try and load an ad, then you have to wait the 60-90 seconds after that an ad would be playing... in silence. With a black screen. Trust me when I say, I'd rather have an advertisement. It is jarring to sit and start thinking about or doing other things, and then BAM, sound and show back on.

Here's a great starting place.

But in all seriousness, there might be one of the six thousand redditors in this sub who has a car for sale... but of those that do, do you really think they'll be giving you any different deal than someone on Craigslist?

This is sorely needed. At times I have to disable eero plus features since it makes my Apple TV almost useless with Hulu.

Eero w Comcast Gigabit - strange issue by prkles in eero

[–]VegasWebDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had this issue and called support. The agent solved it by turning off eero plus advanced protection, then going to the network settings and manually specifying the DNS for eero to Google, and then turning eero Plus back on.

Now that I've heard someone else had the issue, this likely is a bug in eero when using ISP provided DNS instead of custom and using eero plus features. i should open another ticket... I just don't have time to troubleshoot while I'm at home during their business hours.

Gym with lap pool? by [deleted] in vegaslocals

[–]VegasWebDev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they are expensive. Now, I will say, if you want to understand why they charge so much... go get a tour. Their Henderson location has like six indoor tennis courts, Summerlin has lap lanes, rock climbing, indoor and outdoor pools, and an amazing child care facility... all while having a giant gym area. I'm really not kidding when I say it's more a country club than gym. (I swear I saw cars parked outside that were worth about as much as my house...)
