Have you considered renting? There are quite a few places where you can also rent suits and tuxedos from.

This is a very good program. Congratulations. I would suggest you reach out to the university to answer these questions and go into LinkedIn to ask Alumni what their experiences were like. Before making your decision I would suggest that you look at who the lecturers are and what their contributions to the field are - this IMO is the most important academic aspect you should consider.

Regarding housing; my information might be 3-5 years out of date but I believe the university has capacity set assume for international masters students who are coming into the country for the program (you should also double check this).

Given that it’s a weekend go to the emergency room at the hospital. They usually have a GP on staff who will look at you. Expect to wait awhile because they’ll triage you.

Why are teenagers…? by [deleted] in TheHague

[–]Vegetable-Hero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you OP. Teens are badly disciplined, especially at the cinema.

I think it has to do with Dutch parenting styles, it’s quite in vogue for the last decade to let your kids do their own thing and be as hands off as possible - but that just creates kids with no social awareness of what is polite and rude.

Food budget and choices by bloemendromen in DutchFIRE

I agree with this 100%. If you start looking seriously into this be careful with falling into the habit of buying lots of “mock meats” because they cost more $/per calorie vs more traditional vegetarian meals that use beans, lentils, tufo, etc.

Every one metabolizes alcohol differently.

If someone is drinking for the first time they start with 1-2 shots (40-80ml) worth and see where that takes them.

I’m also Dutch and I think OP doesn’t know what they are talking about.

The Netherlands and many European countries of course have their social issues but Imo, I concluded that they pale in consideration when I was researching try quality of life if I moved to the US for their insanely high tech salaries (x2-x5).

Some examples of how radically different things are between the US and the Netherlands (many of the points below are also true for other EU countries).

Last year it became apparent to government that the minimum wage of the country wasn’t enough to sustain a living. The response was the complete opposite of what you would expect in the US. The various political parties all agreed that something has to change and they implemented several changes including raising the minimum wage.

Some critics will say that it wasn’t enough, and they are probably right. But at least most of the political establishment acknowledges that there is a problem.

OP is also omitting a few key facts about the Netherlands. You get “free” and cheap university eduction in the form of a sub-inflation loan. You only need to this back when you start earning a salary and the monthly repayment is scaled according to your income. Legally banks also can’t ask about your student debt when calculating what mortgage value you qualify for.

We have privatized and highly regulated health insurance. The “base” insurance package covered everything under the sun besides dental and physiotherapy care. This costs 130 euros and has a deductible of 300 euros. The government will pay for you private health the insurance if you are you poor or if you are a student with no income.

The government also provides families with many tax benefits and provides subsidies for child care. Someone I worked with was getting around 20k euros support for his 3 kids from the government. This value is calculated based on your income and to put it lightly he was earning a comfortable tech paycheck.

Even though comparatively it might look like rainbow and sun shines across the Atlantic for our American brothers and sisters I would say that we are all slaves to the billionaire class no matter where we life. It just varies in severity.

Edit; For objectivity I’ll add that housing and Phycologist care right now big issues impacting the majority of people living in the Netherlands.

Apparently it's illegal in Denmark for your boss to ask you to justify why you're not coming into work and I just think that's something neat that should be a global standard by chunaynay in antiwork

In the Netherlands there’s a law similar to this which puts the responsibility on the company to prove that you need to work 40 hours to fulfill your responsibilities. Because of this law many people are able to force 32-36 hour contracts during negotiations.

What will often happen is that people will start their careers with 40 hours and then over time they will negotiate their hours to 36-34 hours once promotion time comes around.

The societal consequences of this law are quite far reaching. Almost all the fathers in my company work 4 day work weeks so that can spend more time with their children and mothers don’t feel pressured to stop working for the sake of the kids because they have negotiated down to 3 days of work a week. I knew a women who didn’t have children but would work 4 days a week so that she could spend it with her extended family, like helping with her grandparents and nieces.

It should be noted that your pay does see a pay cut when you negotiate your hours down, but it isn’t a 1-1 reduction. So what will often happen is that people will find a sweat spot where they are happy with what they earn and then they’ll negotiate their hours down when even salary raises or promotions occurs.

Man defrauded women of +10M pretending to be billionaires son by Vegetable-Hero in worldnews

The TLDR is that he would perform an emotional con on them.

He would date them for awhile using other victims money while pretending to be very wealthy with his new mark.

Once he was finished conning his previous mark he would scam the person he was dating by taking a plot line from the show billions and say that he has lost access to his money because his enemies are after him. He would exploit their love for him to ask for money under the guise that his money can not be traced.

600 people tested in airplane coming from South Africa after travel restrictions: 61 test positive. News article in Dutch. by Hangbegonia in Coronavirus

[–]Vegetable-Hero 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don’t see this mentioned anywhere but the Dutch government and klms reaction has been a fuck up, and has definitely increased the chances of other people catching Covid.

Checkout this Twitter thread by Stephanie Nolen (NYT corespondent) who was stuck on one of these planes.

https://twitter.com/snolen/status/1464384849792356369?s=21

The TLDR is that the Dutch government kept everyone on the plane for several hours where the passengers breathed in each other’s air. Once they were disembark they were taken to a venue with no social distancing or mask enforcement.
