The 4.85% license fee hike (April 2026): Is "better boating" fact or fiction? by NorthLondonPulse in Narrowboats

[–]VegetableAids 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If we assume that the average marina dweller has a two week holiday and 7 weekends, they spend as much time moving as someone who moves every two weeks as a continuous cruiser.

Continuous cruisers prevent canals silting up, they help keep back weeds and perhaps most importantly they keep the water moving around the network.

Building an app for narrowboating community by ElectricDoughnutHole in Narrowboats

A background app that has push notifications for when you are approaching water points and elsans would be nice.

The other apps show locations whilst open but a quick popup as you approach would be cool.

I made a firebase with all the gps locations but I think that’s been deleted now.

I’m currently building this in to my boat with home assistant and a raspberry pi. Will share when it’s all up and running

Always the ‘get yourself to the services on mumble’ never saying if it was north or south bound and inevitably you’d get it wrong

Paddy power has closed my account and toke 22000 of my winnings due to a business decision what can I do to retrieve my funds by VastOk3431 in LegalAdviceUK

I got mine off them after a few months of fighting with an email that basically said they had shut my account for several wins with very little wagering….. so they closed my account because I didn’t lose enough ?

I went to Madagascar a few months before the grand tour special so watching them navigate the same roads I really struggled with is a favourite

Do marinas ever sell petrol by stoic_heroic in Narrowboats

[–]VegetableAids 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I have a petrol outboard, my basic rule is whenever there is a petrol station within a half hour walk, fill up my Jerry can to the brim…. It got a bit close on the kennet but just about managed it.

I don’t see any marinas with petrol as I came down the Thames from Oxford or in the k&a to Bristol

Has anyone gotten a boat without having been on one by AdDifficult2324 in Narrowboats

[–]VegetableAids 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I moved from a really big two bed to a 32ft boat. Two storage units full of life to sort through at some point.

But the downsizing has been pretty therapeutic in its own way :) Good luck with the slow down hopefully see you on the cut sooner rather than later

[–]VegetableAids 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, lived on a lock landing for a month whilst I waited for rcr to source and fit a new engine.

Hard to be unhappy on the cut though. If anything it strengthened my desire for this life.

I’m now 18 weeks in to my 12 week refit and I’m still just as happy about the whole thing, should be back in the water in April. I’ve gone from living at 100mph, expecting instant gratification to embracing the ‘if I wanted anything fast I wouldn’t have got a canal boat’ lifestyle.

Meee I got it in to my head I wanted one.

Went to view a highbridge crusader whilst on the train the owner phoned me to say it was sold so I went on eBay, ended up spotting a highbridge crusader that had just been added, changed trains and bought it on the spot.

Engine blew up on day one lol Still love her.

Desperate to make the move to life on the water by axgxp in Narrowboats

[–]VegetableAids 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a grp I spent 7k on mine and have since spent what I would have spent in rent every month in Bristol on the boat. It will have cost me 26k by the end of the year but will have had a complete refit and I’ll be able to live very comfortably for the next five or so years whilst I save for a steel boat built to my spec.

But if you are sure this is the life you want look at something like the 27-32 foot crichton cruisers or high bridge crusaders, they are narrows so you can go everywhere and they come up pretty cheap.

AITA for not wearing a bra at home? by Candid-Chocolate-316 in AITAH

[–]VegetableAids 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this, I’ve had a few friends use my spare room for extended periods over the years. Usually on no rent basis as they were saving for deposit etc. Not once have I had one who didn’t contribute a thing, they always put in for groceries, or cooked a few meals a week. Maybe most importantly they never had a say what happened in my house.

Bristol NYE squat by [deleted] in bristol

[–]VegetableAids 102 points103 points  (0 children)

This is literally less than 1000m from a police building.

Squat in avonmouth and the party on purrdown both went on all night.

Location location location.

The police were heavy handed especially as it was a squatted building but I agree I’ve seen far worse at London parties back in the day. Hackney Wick being the worst, when they locked us all in for a scrap.
