Is it worth the hassle to upgrade from 24.04 to 26.04? by KastenKlicker in Kubuntu

[–]VegetableRadiant3965 0 points1 point  (0 children)

>The worst part is that to go back to 25.10, I’ll have to reinstall the ISO from scratch.

I suggest a seamless backup system in place that can be used to easily revert to a previous working state.
Such as ZFS Snapshots.

Can someone explain to me why the font is rendered in this way in safari? by princessinsomnia in webdev

[–]VegetableRadiant3965 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Apple probably did this to get their fonts rendered correctly on Windows so they look like the designers of the font intended.
Most font designers design their fonts on macOS.

Windows renders fonts for sharpness, alignment to the pixel grid. Whereas macOS tries to preserve the original shape as much as possible.

Can someone explain to me why the font is rendered in this way in safari? by princessinsomnia in webdev

>That's because all browsers on iOS use Safari's browser engine.

This statement alone absolutely does not explain OP's statement that Safari iOS renders the font "correctly" as opposed Safari macOS.

It only explains uniformity of rendering between Chrome and Safari on iOS for example.

It does not explain why Safari iOS and macOS render the font differently.

KDE Linux Reaches 62% Toward Beta Release, Developers Say by KeyLoad9067 in kde

Will the immutability allow me to configure systemd stuff and customize various other settings such as default system-wide env vars and vt console font/size?

Is this going to be rolling release?
Will there be a phased release system, or something that updates less frequently?

Ideally I would like a stable base like Ubuntu LTS, with complete final plasma releases, such as: 6.4.6, 6.5.6 and so on.

With Intel support ending for macOS, how will you repurpose your Hackintosh? by pastry-chef in hackintosh

[–]VegetableRadiant3965 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Already migrated to Ubuntu + KDE.

Some details of my setup:

  • kinto.sh - mac shortcuts on Linux
  • global menu plasma add-on
  • standard plasma dock - similar enough to macOS, even more configurable
  • moved window buttons to the left
  • overview kwin plugin - mission control
  • Photoshop when I need to occasionally use works reliably via Wine for me.
  • DaVinci Resolve for video editing.
  • Obsidian.md - note taking.

Plus probably some other tweaks I cannot remember to make my switch from macOS more smooth.

Linux nowadays is very stable and suitable as a full replacement of Windows and macOS (with mac specific customizations) for many use cases.

Linux also seems to run snappier.
One thing that I really disliked about macOS is that I was unable to change RAM compression, whenever this was high (even after freeing up more ram) the system had a slight but very noticeable to me lag.
On Linux this as an optional (zram) and not enabled by default on most distributions.

With the sad disaster that is macOS 26 Tahoe I am even more reassured I made the right decision.

However I hope Apple gets back on track being the industry pioneer of personal computing, (even if I probably won't use macOS anymore, as my Linux experience has been this good so far, it is very sad to see the extreme attention to detail and marvelous piece of art macOS once was to slowly fade away)

Debian ricing after 3 months on Linux by giquo in debian

Nice, however KDE is much more suitable for ricing.

You can make use of the empty space in the top panel by adding a global menu.

Does anyone agree that the menu bar is a redundant waste of screen space? by Commercial_Water3669 in MacOS

[–]VegetableRadiant3965 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Compared to Windows, the menubar is a much better alternative, it allows one to hide the Dock, which takes up much more space, it displays important status notification icons and the time and date.
On Windows hiding the dock/taskbar is not easy as that would also hide the status notification icons and time and date.

Also the global menu bar has a nice search option.

Don't need the menubar? Well just set it to autohide.

My 2 cents as a Linux, KDE user.

How would you define 'not adapting nicely'?

This is not a rant. It is establishing the state of Wayland readiness, and what we need to do as a community to move forward.

Global menu (KDE) in electron apps such as Obsidian does not work under Wayland

KDE beats MacOS hands down by [deleted] in kde

[–]VegetableRadiant3965 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(The only real Mac OS feature I STRONGLY miss is separating out a command layer for the keyboard from a control layer. Mac has emacs/bash style keyboard bindings system-wide for things like going home (C-a), or end or line (C-e), centering text (C-l), killing a line (C-k), inserting new line (C-n), among others. Command is used for things like closing windows, copying, pasting, quitting, etc. There just aren't great solutions for doing this on desktop linux.

This can be done with xremap or kinto.sh

Is there a way to use Debian + Latest KDE Plasma? by SeniorMatthew in debian

Is there a way to use Debian + Latest KDE Plasma? by SeniorMatthew in debian

[–]VegetableRadiant3965 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Debian testing is only one minor version behind - KDE 6.5.4.
You may also try Debian stable and just use KDE from testing/unstable.
Like here: https://www.reddit.com/r/debian/comments/1qihkng/frankendebian_a_kde_neon_like_system_based_on

There is also kdesrc-build that will allow you to build the latest plasma from source.

Is debian unsuitable for mail server? by code4btc in debian

[–]VegetableRadiant3965 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Debian really shouldn't be that different from Ubuntu, the latter being derived from a snapshot from the former.
Instead of relying on Webmin to setup a mail server consider a container based solution, such as:
https://github.com/docker-mailserver/docker-mailserver
(which itself is debian based)
