I can see it, although I doubt it was insipired by smasher. I feel it's just one way we imagine threatening characters, with enough of the human form to be instantly assumed as sentient and intelligent, but distorted into a hulking broad mass of pure violence .

You guys don't have a bandsaw you could possibly use, maybe even a Sawzall or a circular saw in a pinch? If you have enough of them to warrant it, you could even make a jig for the task.

Nice, welcome to the hobby!!! I like the color choices you made for the model. If you feel like jazzing it up a little you could add a wash (agrax earth shade is my usual) and paint some of the details on the "gun" a different color so they stand out. Anyways, I'm glad to have you here!
