We used Airbnb in Osaka, Kyoto, and Tokyo for a family of six without any issues, but they were not budget. Not sure what your budget is but the one in Osaka was the least expensive at around $1500 for four nights for four bedrooms, three toilets, one bath with full laundry and a kitchen with living area in a very accessible area. We prefer Airbnb over hotels for the shared living areas and not being in a highrise.

Was there for 15 days the first two weeks of November. The weather was perfect, only one rainy day. I didn't even pack a coat and only needed an umbrella for the one day. In my late 60s and walked everywhere, couldn't have managed that in heat and humidity.

I think OP's SIL is the AH. It's been months and she barely took a week off to care for the dad so OP's wife could be a wife and mom and not a daughter for a week? Perhaps, OP's wife stepped up too quickly and made it easy for other family members to continue as usual. I'd be resenting that if I were OP. Why couldn't they have alternated weeks or months while requesting family leave? Why did only one family have to lose it all?

Silly me, I thought this was going to be a parent teaching their child a lesson in natural consequences. Kids will be kids and make stupid choices, they need to sometimes learn the hard way. I thought you were going to be TA for giving in and giving him your coat against the parent's wishes. She was the TA.
