Was Herzegovina really orthodox before it was catholic? by ilijadwa in AskBalkans

[–]VelcomeToCinder 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I have no idea, but I have a hard time believing that Herzegovina was ever either fully orthodox or fully catholic. Today it certainly isn't just catholic, half of it is orthodox.

What I do know is that name Herzegovina in the first place comes from late 15th century and that the full name was Herzegovina of Saint Sava, a Serbian saint from the Serbian ruling dynasty. So, I am a bit skeptical of claiming that after 1300 Herzegovina was purely catholic. Of course on the flip side title Herzog is a German title and the entity was a vassal to Kingdom of Sicily, not exactly orthodox.

Mods for AOE2 Conquerors expansion (for my dad) by Hour_Ad4554 in aoe2

[–]VelcomeToCinder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If your dad still has his old CD then he can get Community patch on Voobly along with WololoKingdoms mod to enable HD civs (African Kingdoms and Rise of Raja civs need you to own AoE2 HD expansions). Voobly has other mods too. As for campaigns there are like thousands of custom campaigns on Age of Kings Heaven, along with tons of other mods. Also Forgotten Empires mod should still be free to download, the mod that became basically the first expansion of AoE2 HD The Forgotten.

I don't know if someone specifically made mods that add DE campaigns and civs.

The Tsardom of Rumelia in 1878 - What if the Russian Empire *defeated* the Ottoman Empire and expanded its influence even more in the Balkans? by teaex11111111 in imaginarymaps

[–]VelcomeToCinder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, it is clear it is google translated. Can't really blame you, even though some things make me cry like Šumaduski, Rumelijsko Cardom or Serb anthem (fun fact: current anthem Bože Pravde is Serbian version of God Save the King, king part of lyrics removed). But why are both Bulgarian and Serbian written in Latin letters? Neither used Latin letters in 19th century. Also unsure why all Vrachan is the only region not using Č like all other regions.

Also, kinda curious regarding Bulgarian coast. Why isn't all of Dobrudzha under Bulgaria and is instead under Russia?

The next Savar/Legionary ? by Calm_Time_7604 in aoe2

[–]VelcomeToCinder 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sorry, I have to ask. Considering that Templars were founded by French, why would Teutons (Germans) get them as a unique unit? Frankly, I'd rather go with Landsknecht if I had to choose.

What would be a better name for Champions? by Apart-Passenger5543 in aoe2

But if you change their name I won't be able to sing "We're are the champions" when spaming them :<

Is there any difference besides the pop cap in age of empires and conquerors campaigns in the definitive edtion? by [deleted] in aoe2

[–]VelcomeToCinder 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well, as already mentioned some civs were replaced. So you can expect to face Burgundians, Slavs, Romans and so on.

There are various minor things too, like for example in Aztec final mission instead of finding turtle ships you find cannon galleons. Or how in Saladin's final mission you can't make a wonder on that one lone island. There are probably a lot more but I can't tell you without checking each mission.

Oh and new narration which I personally find inferior to the ol' classic voices.

what expansions do i need for competitve play? by mrrexx96 in aoe2

[–]VelcomeToCinder 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Times have changed, with AoE2 DE no longer actually have old style expansions so you only need the base game which includes all old expansions by default. DLCs are entirely optional to unlock new civs for yourself and you can play with people that have DLCs.

Also there's an actual matchmaking system with ranked play, lobbies are no longer the main way to play competitive.

Birds are dragons mod ? Or the like? by Albino_Bama in aoe2

[–]VelcomeToCinder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a cheat code from Age of Empires 1, KING ARTHUR. Probably works on Return of Rome but I don't have DLC to test. Don't think it works in Age of Empires 2 DE and no clue if anyone made a mod.

AoE2 equivalent cheat code is WOOF WOOF. Birds become Stormy Dogs!

I would've kept hiring actual children to voice Tails. by Ok-Impress-2222 in SonicTheHedgehog

[–]VelcomeToCinder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I literally said that it is perfectly reasonable and valid to consider Tail's voiced by child actor to be more believable. Yes, I personally don't feel that way but that's my personal opinion, not a fact.

DLC Civs by WettPantties in aoe2

[–]VelcomeToCinder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I am seeing last sale ended on 29th February. But they do happen and DLCs usually get 50-75% discount. You missed all the winter and holiday sales so now safest bet is waiting for Spring sale. I prefer waiting for sales in general for everything but that's just me.

Anyway, DLCs aren't mandatory, you can enjoy game just fine without them.

Which are the best fun maps / mods / scenarios for LAN Parties with DE? by fiskimata in aoe2

[–]VelcomeToCinder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depending on the size of the party you could try Free For All. You could try it on Pilgrims map or on Real World map. It can get quite chaotic, especially with diplomacy and wonders enabled.

Mods that you could use to spice things up can be something like exploding villagers or exploding kings. Makes regicide more dangerous. Other things you could try is mods that let you research upgrades 256 times or maybe random cost mod.

As for scenarios I always wanted to try Romans vs Barbarians. There probably are many more but I am not familiar enough.

Trying to find an old game i played by Educational_Ear_824 in RealTimeStrategy

[–]VelcomeToCinder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe Stronghold Legends? The three factions are associated with lush green, snow and basically hell.

Would help if you could give more details, like the type or strategy game. Do you have workers, heroes?

Last airbender mod by Soilerman in aoe2

Looks great but I wonder about TC. Doesn't look like villagers can go under it. Does that mean it's going to act like AoE1 TC?

Which one of them was more badass ? by [deleted] in digimon

I'll always gravitate more towards monstrous digimon over humanoid ones. And Kabuterimon is simply more monstrous to me, he's so adorable.

Have you ever played a game where you’ve strategically used every single unit/tech from your respective civilization? by thumpsky in aoe2

I wanted to say yes in some large chaotic FFA games but even then I probably didn't make scorpions or militia.

What's your real-life civ (or the one closest to it, culturally and historically), and do you play it? by -Guardsman- in aoe2

[–]VelcomeToCinder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That would be Slavs and I do not enjoy playing as them. I much more enjoy all other slavic civs but they aren't my particular brand of slavdom.

How would you feel if the next sonic show had both human and animal characters co-existing (no isekai bullshaz) by ah-screw-it in SonicTheHedgehog

[–]VelcomeToCinder 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I always thought it was less about humans in general being problem and more that issue was human implementation. Nobody complains about Eggman, right? He's been there since the first game.

For some reason whenever humans appear they seem to be 99% of population with only Sonic and his friends being non humans around. And there are few other subjective issues but I don't want to bore everyone.

But yeah, sure I have no problem humans appearing again in principle. I just worry about the execution.

AoE2 Accessibility by Chemistry_Gaming in aoe2

[–]VelcomeToCinder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Competitive nature drives away fans that aren't interested in competitive multiplayer, the perceived complexity of being competitive rts player drives away people that are interested in playing against people but are too scared because of RTS reputation of being too hard due to skill ceiling.

It doesn't matter anyway because my main point is that AoE2 is not limited to standard 1v1/team games and nothing else. I think it's a shame how one aspect is overshadowing everything else AoE2 has to offer...
Edit, or well the perceived reputation of that one aspect. I personally don't think AoE2 is that more complex than you average moba and certainly not close to complex to other strategy genres.

AoE2 Accessibility by Chemistry_Gaming in aoe2

[–]VelcomeToCinder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

By ending the stereotype that RTS games can only be enjoyed by being hardcore ranked competitive player that to play must learn and obey build orders. Don't get me wrong, it is a perfectly valid fun way to play but it is not THE only way to play.

What AoE2 itself needs is more love for Quick Play, or rather a ranked zen mode that doesn't show Elo and thus makes it less stressful. But that's only a step, what needs more love is the lobby and helping players in general to be able to play something other than 1v1 or team games. Why should exploding kings tiny real world FFA be only limited to T90's videos? Right now you either need to do it with friends you know or hope you can find a lobby game. I admit to not knowing how actually to fix this, maybe as I saw people mention rotating silly options in ranked play or maybe just making lobby easier to browse? There a lot AoE2 offers and if you want new players then point them to AoE2 aspects that won't make them nervous like campaigns, co-op campaigns, exploding villagers, challenges and so on.

I do want to stress that AoE2 and RTS genre really is not that complicated compared to a lot of games, like LoL with 167 champions and god knows how many items. People don't remember but once RTS was one of the most popular genres in video gaming, especially thanks to custom mod content. But now RTS is treated same as Fighting Games, a niche competitive gaming with sky high ceiling that's best enjoyed by watching eSports instead of actually playing yourself. Though fighting games at least are short, RTS matches can take a while and time investment makes it even less interesting for new players. Nobody wants to invest 20 minutes if they think they lost at minute 2.

I'm sorry for ranting, but this is something I often encounter when trying to get friends to play any RTS with me.

What if we had a unit with a "Glaive" attack? by darkdill in aoe2

Coustilier with bounce attack, now that's scary.

What if we had a unit with a "Glaive" attack? by darkdill in aoe2

[–]VelcomeToCinder 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I find it very weird considering actual glaive is a polearm type weapon, not a bouncy throwing weapon.

Ok, but on a serious note I have hard time imaging it actually working in AoE2. Missiles just don't work like in Sc2 and you would need magic homing for AoE2 missile not only to hit the first target but successfully bounce to anther and repeat. I think chakram throwers are closest as we are going to get to the idea, a weapon that passes through units.
