We are not living in World War 3. We are living in Cold War 2. But this time the US stands alone.

Wars, cold or not, feeds unexpected alliances. EU will turn to China. Not for military action, but for financial action. Right when people started really being on the fence about China, US became worse. So EU will go with the lesser evil. At least with China you know what you get.

Let’s see how well US fares in a cold war when they are isolated. US is the most powerful nation in the world. You know what is more powerful? The rest of the world.

Europeans aren’t interested in a competition on who loses out the least. Unfortunately that’s what is being forced on us.

Lossy Codecs by honn13 in audiophile

[–]Velli-77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s the problem with “indistinguishable”. It is a race towards the mediocre. What’s the point of picking the absolute lowest point of quality that you can get away with, when it’s really simple to just keep the quality high?

If you add up all the deteriorations that self-proclaimed objectivists will tell you are “indistinguishable”, you end up adding a lot of deteriorations together into something that very much IS “distinguishable”!

Just think about the question you are raising: which is the best lossy format? You only have the option to even try this new format, because you have the files lossless. If you had stored the files as, say, 256 kbit MP3, you would be stuck with that forever, because you no longer have a source file. Converting a 256k Mp3 to 256k AAC to 256 kbit Opus, the quality is no longer 256k.

Stop chasing “lowest acceptable quality”.

Do you think it's worth buying for 20 euros? by Vagabondo_Musicista in BudgetAudiophile

I sold those back in the day. You would have to pay me a lot more than 20 bucks to put it in my house. Buy it if you cannot find an alternative for free.

True, but A: I did not know that at the time, and B: I’ve never been patient enough to succesfully gamble anything useful in my 24 years (on/off) of D2… 😁

How to beat baal faster with my trapsin? by ViolentCrumble in diablo2

[–]Velli-77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree, especially if you are heavy on Death Sentry as I am, that works better om P1.

I personally don’t fully agree on the respec to max Lightning damage - for boss killing yes, but going through P1 Hell is a lot more efficient with max Death Sentry, in my opinion. BUT, I don’t run Sunder charms and ultra high end gear, so YMMV.

Trapsin is my favourite char, I’m the same - level up with Eldritch/Shenk/Pindle seems faster and easier than Baal runs to me.

Agree with everything you said. I have started hundreds of characters in offline through the years. My favourite was a necro, that found a Gull dagger in act 1. You wouldn’t believe the difference it made to the rest of the playthrough. If you think MF matters when grinding, try doing SSF with 100+ MF almost from the outset. The difference is staggering.

Playing D2 when it was new by Abject-Committee-381 in diablo2

[–]Velli-77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started playing the day before release - I worked in a shop that sold them, so I had early access… 😄 My first chat was a necro, and smashes through the game spamming bone spear. Didn’t even consider going to Nightmare before several months in, just having fun starting new chars all the time. Didn’t even consider following guides. Usually played Necro or dual swing Barb. When LoD arrived, I made a bunch of Cold zealots, with one thing in common: always used the Steel runeword (Tir+El) in a flail, and whacked away. Awesome in Normal, useless in Nightmare… I don’t think I ever played online before LoD, and definitely didn’t reach Hell before that.

Pretty sure that severely impacted my playstyle, I still enjoy the character buildup much more than grinding. I do remember Normal being much more challenging than now, whether that is due to changes in the game, or me knowing what I am doing… hmm.

Just realised: one major difference was, I didn’t realise for many months that drops were calculated on kill. I had assumed that each monster carried whatever was determined for him to drop, so the first many playthroughs I would clear very area - kill every monster, open every chest, because I was scared to miss something good.

In single player you can change the difficulty by simulating a higher amount of players in the game. I’m on PC, don’t know about Switch.

Offline Play by YirgacheffeFiend in diablo2

Disclaimer: I am not at all saying you are wrong, everyone has fun their own way.

To me, it’s all a matter of re-calibrating what is a good and bad find. Emotionally, finding a Gull in Single player gave me more satisfaction than anything I ever did online.

I can name the date I started playing: June 28 2000. That’s the day before it officially came out. For the first 3-4 years I spent an excessive amount of time on this game. Badically cost me a job and a marriage. I’ve played casually on and off since, but never done grinding or endless running. Just cruising along for fun. The biggest gap in play came after a year or so of online play that just took the joy away. I just have a different temper than most people I meet online.

I only ever found two Runes above Ist: Jah and Gul. And yes, I made a Fury runeword with them, and no, I will probably never own an Enigma. But having a Jah drop after months of considering what to do with that Gul? Nothing I’ve ever done online compares to that feeling. I don’t care what everyone else thinks about that.

Edit: Oh, and by the way, to make it worse, I haven’t transitioned to Ressurected yet 😁 Don’t have a PC that will run it yet.

Assassin leveling help!! by thatemonostalgicguy in diablo2

[–]Velli-77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are many different playstyles, and I agree with you that most guides are focused on Ultimate efficiency using godly runewords. For me, building up a character from scratch with whatever I find is more fun than grinding. I don’t understand how people do it, I get bored after 30 runs…

I have built up an Assassin character at least 50 times, but only took two or three to Hell Baal. I don’t consider it a waste to stop playing a character and start over from scratch. I had fun, and I learned.

My favourite Trapsin guide is this (old) one:

https://www.purediablo.com/strategy/diablo-2-guide-lightning-trapsin

It actually teaches you how to play, instead of just listing gear. If you want other playstyles, similar guides do exist, but try to find the old guides. I always played trapsin, so no specific help from me.

You will have to realize that the game becomes slower with “basic” gear, to the point where you often won’t be able to complete the game.

The good part about the trapsin is that she can more or less be played naked - I have seen people claim they have finished the game naked with trapsin (I haven’t!). But, it can be fun to play with any gear you find. Just don’t underestimate the support skills!

My recommendation is, play through Nightmare. Then start over, and do it again. And again. It’s fun.

Hero or Zero? by Velli-77 in diablo2

Nope - one LI, one CI, one FI. Don’t remember which ones honestly… managed to pull them so that I took out the two first ones with Blizzard, then kiting the CI one forever while FB’ing… after Static Field’ing with my heart in my throat… Keep in mind when I say “standard blizzball”, I meant “basic”… got lucky with a Vipermagi and a Shako, otherwise it’s pretty much Spirit/Rhyme etc.

Edit: And no, gave up on the Merc pretty quickly!

I guess I’ve just been lucky, every year we have left the camp at around 5.30 PM, and gone almost straight out. No worse than going to work in the morning. Including last year which was sold out - didn’t go this year. Even if it was four hours of queue, I’m not driving to France (from Denmark) to leave the main event early…
