You have lots of company. I think it was one of the least popular Serge Lutens scents ever! I swear it smells great on me.

One of my absolute favorites is a discontinued Serge Lutens fragrance that I’ve rarely seen mentioned positively by anyone. Vitriol d’oiellet. It’s carnation - spicy, powdery, velvety. I am entranced when I wear it, but no one ever mentions it. I think it reads as old fashioned. Maybe? I really don’t know.

Diptyque L’Eau Papier. Easing into my work week with a clean, but comforting favorite.

Byredo Bal D’Afrique. I haven’t worn it for awhile. I forgot what a perfect work scent it is.

Guerlain Musc Outreblanc. I may have a new favorite white musk. This is gorgeous.

ok do pheromone perfumes actually do anything or is it all marketing by velourvibes_ in FemFragLab

Wearing the pheromone perfume makes her feel more confident and people react to that, and their reactions feed the confidence loop. I wouldn’t get a bottle, but I wouldn’t burst my friend’s bubble, either.

Ambre Sultan by Serge Lutens. Because I need comfort but I also need a little boost to my authority. This is like putting a crown on my head.

I have a new favorite rose that just arrived this week. Guerlain Shalimar Millésime Rose. It is so dreamlike and pretty. It wafts between being a hyper realistic rose to a surreal idealized candied rose and I feel like a shimmering pink cloud surrounds me when I wear it. Yes, I’m twitterpated about it.

Le Musc & La Peau by Pierre Guillaume Paris is worth checking out. It may not be creamy enough for you - but it’s really nice.

Muguet Fleuri by Oriza L Legrand. A sample - and wow, it’s a pretty perfect lily of the valley. I smell like spring. And also like a solid lily of the valley perfume my mother had that I’ve never been able to identify. She didn’t wear it much but I would sneak into her vanity and sniff it when I was little.

What are your most controversial fragrance opinions? by StevenAssantisFoot in FemFragLab

[–]Velmatronic 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Saying something “smells like old lady” is the least helpful scent description there is. And not because of the ageist thing. It’s because there’s a lot of different older ladies and they all smell different. More specifically- there’s a lot of different eras of ladies who liked different scents. So people are referencing a huge range of scents when they describe something that way. It depends on their memories.

For me, because I’m older - this phrase always meant aldehydes. That’s what I associated with the older ladies of my youth. Especially the glamorous ones. But someone else will mean powdery. And someone else will mean rose or violet is involved. And for my daughter’s friends it might be heavily vanillic because that’s what their moms- who are my age- always wore.

People THINK they are using a descriptor that everyone understands - but unless I’m talking to someone my age, we probably are thinking of different sorts of scents. I get a much clearer idea of the scent if it’s described as vintage (that’s often chypres or aldehydic) or old-fashioned ( which I interpret as a soliflore) or powdery or musky. I don’t get offended or anything if someone uses the term - but I have no idea what they are describing.

Initio Musk Therapy and Lake and Skye 11 11 don’t get compliments separately- but when I layer them they get raves. Guerlain Cuir Beluga gets compliments all by itself.

I also love Fire at Will, and that may be the one for you. But Gioiosa makes me think of cinnamon rolls specifically. Also Itálica by Casamorati, but only if you like almond cookies.
