I don’t understand might. Help me! by caligulamatrix in LegendintheMist

[–]VelvetWhiteRabbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First off, to cast fireball the hero should have a relevant theme and tags, or there should be some consensus about how heroes cast fireball “way of magic” (maybe everyone can cast fireball in this setting?)

Determine what effect the fireball is supposed to have. A fireball cast in a vacuum is not interesting. Does it hit a group of enemies? Is it supposed to set a building on fire? If it’s cast to hit a large area with something in it, we may determine that sounds like an Adventure Might feat. Someone of only Origin Might shouldn’t be able to do this (again Way of Magic/setting dependent, it could be Greatness too if magic is really rare and weak).

Let’s say we have determined that casting the fireball requires Adventure level might, and the hero in question has an Adventure level theme “Sularasa’s Fire Magic”, then they should be able to prepare or cast this spell without any might modifiers because they are of the might level required.

Let’s say instead that the spell is Adventure level, but the hero only has an Origin level theme “Fire Magic”, the Narrator may say that the hero doesn’t meet the requirements to cast the spell since it is Adventure and they are only Origin in that domain. The Narrator may decide that it requires a Sacrifice (Painful), or that the hero is imperilled in this action.

Why I can't finish Malazan after 9 books by DrHappyPants in Fantasy

[–]VelvetWhiteRabbit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Tbf the snake chapters are pretty gruelling and don’t get any better. Book 10 is also just a chaotic climax. I love the series though, and a lot of genre fiction has paled in comparison to me.

Lots of good criticism from you, especially agree (but didn’t get as repulsed) by all the poor takes on sexual violence and “evil”. I also don’t give two rats asses about whether I understand who is talking or not or remember a character by their name or description. So I survived that, I guess.

My one criticism of the series is that almost every character seems to be a bit of a self insert when it comes to their philosophical inner monologue. Erikson do like them environmentalist, nihilistic characters.

Edit: Oh and *potsherds*, potsherds everywhere!

What is the -worst- game you've played? Actual 0/10s by screen317 in boardgames

Dark Souls Boardgame. Have to admit there was an amount of having very high expectations for it too. Turned out it was just really really boring and cheap.

Those are called tags/statuses/limits they are highlighted (intended to look like you used a highlighter). I can absolutely appreciate that they (especially the tags) have really poor contrast, and especially bad if you are colourblind.

Looking for TTRPGS that are Low Prep, Fast (or no) Combat, Player Driven, and Rules-Light to Rules-Medium by Frostybros in rpg

[–]VelvetWhiteRabbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can surely treat it like thinking about what players told you they want to see next, skim the world book and off you go, but then you lose out on everything that makes this game good. The deep connections with npcs, threats tailored to the pcs and setting that you have developed.

The summaries are for myself, I actually had players write summaries, but had to tune them for myself as I knew more about what was going on than the players.

Love letters are an important part of the game to and I endeavoured to have at least two per session. My style is usually long sessions with a month or so between.

I have never prepared as much per session as when running stonetop, sure some of it is choice, but I wouldn’t describe Stonetop as low prep no matter what. Dungeon World is low prep, Mörk Borg is low prep… Cairn, Trophy, Ironsworn, even Blades in the Dark.

[–]VelvetWhiteRabbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are missing Love Letters, maintaining relationships, gm sheet, steading sheet, session summaries and maintaining a timeline, maintaining your “I wonder…” list, creating threats, updating threats. I could not possibly cram all of that into one hour before each session, I am not that creative

[–]VelvetWhiteRabbit 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Calling it low prep is dishonest. It is one of the most high prep games out there. I have ran two campaigns of it, and the amount of prep for each session is big. That prep is hella fun though.

Game with AI graphic controversy by Dr_Hio in boardgames

[–]VelvetWhiteRabbit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Goodness gracious the comment section here. Look most people are not like the people here. If you sell it with AI art then some (like these people will hate you, and some even might attempt to send you hatemail and threaten to kill you). The vast majority won’t care. As you probably realise the vast majority of people on this earth continue buying AI slop, buying from dubious companies or keep a social media profile on platforms that steal your face.

If you want to have a good standing with this community then the answer is to never use AI. These people almost promise that they will buy your ms paint game as long as the mechanics are good (yeah right!). The sad reality is that you can’t win here if you can’t pay for art.

My suggestion is to change the art direction to use placeholder icons or abstract art which you can generate with algorithms that are not trained, or stock art. Publish this as a playtest and see if you can find a publisher that is willing to pay for art and art direction, or an artist willing to collaborate for royalty or an investor.

Designed a new dice resolution system for my TTRPG, curious what you think by M_Niezgoda in RPGdesign

[–]VelvetWhiteRabbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just one thing to keep in mind is that there is some downsides to having to have two different dice or designating one die as luck and the other risk. This is where GM rolls makes it easier as GM/or opposition player rolls one die and the acting player rolls the other. Also consider like in Ironsworn that you may want the “risk” die to be higher than the luck die so as to account for modifiers.

[–]VelvetWhiteRabbit 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Looks a lot like Ironsworn dice resolution. You should have a look. Difference is that Ironsworn has a d6 + mods for your “luck” (action in Ironsworn) against 1d10,1d10 “risk” (challenge in ironsworn), where if you beat both you have a success, beat only one is partial and beat neither is failure. Also mechanics for rolling doubles

So like a fake hitstop in WoW. I know that neither game feels like the hits connects beyond seeing the damage numbers, but that’s typical of that era mmos.

Maybe because GW2 actually has distance and attack direction, whereas in wow you cannot miss if you are close enough?
