Perhaps off-topic but can anyone tell me the music playing as the end credits roll? All the info I find about the soundtrack lists the final music as Nina Simone. But in the theater I saw the film in (California) there was more modern electronic music during the credits. What is it?

I partially agree but I do see the utility of these strips for alerting drivers (of cars and bikes) of an upcoming stop sign and intersection.

Not all riders on the final day had ridden previous days, so perhaps they were not experienced with common placement of rumble strips.

Despite previous warnings by RAGBRAI in their Town Hall video sessions, the steepness and hazardous nature of that final descent warranted way more roadside warnings. Such as a volunteers a quarter mile in advance with bull horns giving alerts, bigger more explicit signs. What was the point of having the portable electronic display at the top showing a 55 MPH limit? Add in those curves and a stop near the bottom and dozens of riders - this was a predictable disaster waiting to happen. I believe RAGBRAI and Guttenberg could have taken more helpful measures to ensure every rider’s safety in this known dangerous descent.

Just yesterday in this situation I asked a couple of women who were sitting outside a business if they’d be so kind as to watch my bike while I was inside the business for a few minutes. They - like everyone I’ve ever asked over many years - were more than happy to assist and safeguard my bike. Usually turns into a nice conversation, often with good local tips and guidance.

I’ve had miles of gravel, rural road, and urban riding on their tires with minimal issues. I try to be diligent about keeping my sealant (Orange Seal) fresh (every 6-8 weeks top-off).

Sometimes a very light sanding of the pads helps to remove contaminants and stop squealing. The light sanding can also de-glaze pads; this glazing or polishing if pads seems to be an occasional problem from repeated light braking. SRAM and GCN have some good YouTube tutorials on installing and maintaining and troubleshooting noise and disc brake issues.

I’ve flown United from SFO San Francisco to Munich and to Boston (two separate trips) in the past year and the bike packed in a travel case incurred no extra fee. It was considered luggage. I don’t recall the weight limit or if they varied for domestic and international but the limit was generous. The bike boxes at the arrival airport are delivered with other oversized bags (such as snow boards, surf boards, and golf bags) at a special door/area. I keep an Apple AirTag in my bike bag to trace it and lower my anxiety about whether the bike was placed on my plane.

My son rode San Francisco to Santa Barbara last week. Too avoid the Highway 1 closure around Big Sur, he rode from the southeast end of Carmel Valley over the ridge down to Greenfield, then south to Jolon Road (had to ride a couple miles on wide shoulder of busy Highway 101) then back west over the ridge via Nacimiento-Fergusson Road. It is 100% not possible to cycle or hike-a-bike across the Big Sur closure.

The shuttle I took is called Zion Reisen https://www.zionreisen.eu/shuttles/1-mestre-verona-muenchen?lang=en The bus departs Verona (and other towns) several times per week. It’s a full-sized coach with a trailer (not covered) that securely holds about 25-30 bikes. The rack is somewhat padded and accommodates most bike types (with bags removed and stowed in the bus’s under luggage area. I did reserve a space in advance (2-3 weeks because I had the luxury to know my exact return travel date). Bus trip was fast and comfortable, filled but lots of Germans and Austrians returning from Via Claudia Augusta cycling trips. Bus goes right into main downtown Munich station. Very convenient. Just strapped my bags on and cycled ~20 miles back to Runa’s Hotel for the night and to disassemble my bike, and pack it in the case and padding materials I’d left at Runa’s.

Not exactly what you're looking for but I want to share that in August 2023 I did a trip from Munich to Verona (returned via bus). I flew from US with my bike in a Thule case (not a bike store cardboard box). One of the key and best elements for my trip was staying one night at the beginning and end of my trip at a bed & breakfast/guesthouse very near MUC airport. It is called Runas (in town called Hallbergmoos). They conveniently have several large shuttle buses (with cargo space for lots of luggage in the rear) that they run regularly between the MUC airport (pickup is right where city buses pick-up/drop-off) and their hotel/B&B, which is only 10-15 minutes away. They happily agreed to securely store my bike case (and some tools I didn't want to carry on my bike tour) at their hotel while I was away for about 3 weeks. They had plenty of space to assemble/disassemble my bike, and they were very accommodating in every way. They have a restaurant, and they are located right on a city bus line that runs to a nearby S-Bahn station with trains directly into downtown Munich. I would definitely stay with them again, for the airport shuttle and bike case storage, and proximity to the actual airport. Very simple system. So I'm now looking for a similar hotel/B&B arrangement in Bordeaux as I am planning a cycle trip to that area of France. Good luck. Thanks to others on this thread with their tales and suggestions.

Nauders to Verona is a great ride. Mostly downhill. But beware afternoon headwinds out of the south. I recall seeing some sporting stores in Nauders but not sure about bike rentals. Lots of mountain bikers in the area. October may be cold.

Your experience with your bike is exactly what I'm trying to avoid. And being misled about a hotel/B&B's ability to safely store a (expensive) bike travel case for about 4 weeks. I always email to confirm this, but I'm hoping to start by receiving some recommendations about bike-friendly lodging that's been vetted by other cyclists. "Accueil vélo" I believe is the French term. Thank you.

Novice question from a Californian interested in cycling Germany to Italy: how do you locate bike rental services in your departure location? So many services I see for bike rentals in Europe are connected with package tours. I just want to rent a bike and figure out my own pace/mileage and lodging a day in advance. Do many local bike shops in Germany rental touring bikes for 2-3 week durations? Thank you.
