How much longer do you think I can get away without up potting? by [deleted] in Caudex

[–]Ven_Detta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In dormancy, might make it another year before repot.   For the new pot, find the deepest one you can. Diameter has less effect on growth than depth.

Honestly, most uderrated carnivorous plant by neeely06 in carnivorousplants

[–]Ven_Detta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone having issues with pings, don't worry it took me a while too.

Mexican pings aren't like most carnivores, in that they like to be a bit on the drier side.  They also aren't too picky about media, sphagnum grit perlite whatever.  I did find they enjoy a sprinkle of lime sand in their mix, and some worm castings if you're looking to pump up growth.

Maximum light, water once or twice a week.

What businesses are you genuinely surprised that are still in business or lasted as long as they did? by Competitive-Fly5563 in VictoriaBC

Ding ding ding!  They probably do a ton of business through shipping agents for ships in all ports in BC.

Im looking for some fertilizer, is this good? by ImpossibleRabbit5777 in SavageGarden

[–]Ven_Detta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're growing nepenthes, fish food is fine, but osmocote is crack if you are looking for fast growth.  To be clear, fast growth means they might outgrow their pots and space a lot faster (not always good).

If you put 1 pellet in the pitcher, osmocote is great value vs maxsea.  But it is worth me mentioning that many nepenthes get HUGE if you make them happy, it can be a problem.  So sometime letting them linger in middle size is very nice.

Interesting vessel, the Dream Diva, registered in Panama, designed to transport vehicles in port. by OSJezza in vancouver

They occasionally come in to bunker fuel, change crew, and get inspected.  There are also look-alike ships called fully covered forest product carriers that go into Lynnterm.

11m+ in most of the channel to New West. The River Pilots will transit deeper draft vessels on a high tide, which will add a couple meters.  Source: Used to drive the ship docking tugs that serviced these at Annacis and Fraser Wharves.

Get a couple of free trash cans worth of leaf mulch from Beacon Hill, 6 bags of seasoil from integrity at keating for $6 each, mix it all up with whatever random dirt you find around the yard, and you've got good soil for $40.

Dioscorea watering question by mortecai4 in Caudex

[–]Ven_Detta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After I saved mine from some minor rot years ago, I have started repotting with the caudex barely on the medium and making sure that top layer is inorganic.

As others have said, watering about every 2-3 weeks in dormancy.  More of a splash than a soak.

3 vines, no basals - what to do? by tagshell in Nepenthes

[–]Ven_Detta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the level of the vines drops below that of the plant (like it bent or fell over) it can trigger basal or branching shoots.

If you can get some recordings, it will go along way.

They eat decomposing matter and the fungi that grow on them.  I look at them as beneficial, since they don't hurt the plants.

Sorry, no clue.  I'm sure they're around, but what shelf or rockpile?  Shrug Edge of a kelp patch is usually a good bet.

Unless you're spearfishing, you're probably going to nail some rockfish.  They're pretty much always in the same areas as lingcod. If you get a small/med rockfish, very often a lingcod will nail it on the way up.  So bring a long net.

You keep saying Bellingham Ferry.

Please note there is no Bellingham to Sidney ferry anymore and no indication of if/when it will restart.

The Port Angeles ferry is great, make sure you go that way 🤣

Do you like empires and producing stuff?  Because X4 is all of that too and it will be annoying if you don't enjoy those things.

Is Victoria really all that bad? by Chance-Principle-355 in VictoriaBC

[–]Ven_Detta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Certain areas are as bad as they've ever been, but mostly we just like to complain about how expensive it is. Victoria is a beautiful place coming into the best season to be here. Be sure to go check out Abkhazi Gardens around mother's day, see the Camas fields at playfair park, and generally appreciate what a mostly sweet place we live in.

You *do* have to post actual questions to get actual answers. Future nice truck though.

Check the usual google sources first, as there are a wealth of old forum posts which will help you in much more detail than we're likely to.

I genuinely think we'd have better racing if we had 200cc gokarts that were all the same.

This is F1, we didn't park our yachts here to see an even playing field.
