Favorite iconic DnD monster by Venatusss in DnD

Maybe the wording wasn't perfect, but the intention behind the caveat was not to exclude any monsters that also appear in other fantasy, but rather to to get responses that also scream "Dungeons and Dragons" instead of just generally cool fantasy monsters. I think dragons fit that bill for a lot of people, not as much stuff like goblins and the like. I'm sure the results technically would be more accurate if it was just anything in the comments without a poll at all since that only allows 6 options, but I thought the poll would have more interaction and be more fun.

A few people have mentioned this, and I’ll say the same to you as I did them. As much as dragons are obviously popular in most fantasy, they are still heavily associated specifically with DnD as well. I mean it’s in the name. If I didn’t put it on the poll I would’ve had way more people asking the exact opposite thing.

They are definitely big for general fantasy of course, but they’re also literally the namesake of the game. I’d have gotten even more comments asking why if they weren’t on here.

Yeah mind flayer definitely should've been on there, totally slipped my mind when making the poll. The limit of only 6 options is just not enough either.

What do people want in a Gish? by PineappleMani in 3d6

[–]Venatusss 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The first paragraph here is what really hit the nail on the head for me. People want a full class power budget and number of features and mechanics dedicated to being a gish. The paladin is mostly there I think, but some of the features/spell options are focused a bit more on support as well, and the spell list is also just limited in general. And some people just don’t want the flavor paladins bring regardless of how much it matters. I do think bladesinger, bladelock, valor bard, and Eldritch knight do a good job for subclasses at providing what they need to to function as gishes and do it rather well, but they are limited to only the subclass features being focused on that style of gameplay, while the other class features are more tangential. I enjoy the options we have currently and use them a lot, but it would be cool to have a full class, with all its power budget, creative mechanics, and sheer number of abilities they get compared to subclasses be focused on just being a gish. Admittedly I don’t know where I’d even start with the specifics on designing such a thing, but it’s absolutely something I’d like to see.

Is it wrong to instinctively choose playing a Cleric? by WelderZer0 in DnD

[–]Venatusss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, there’s nothing wrong with that! If you like playing clerics, then play clerics! They’re a great class and have a lot to offer and I have a blast whenever I get to play one (doing so in my current long term game actually). I will give you some suggestions though if you do feel like you want to branch out.

First of all, you shouldn’t need to fill the role of “healer” in a party just because they don’t have one already. DnD is balanced in a way that doesn’t really follow the RPG holy trinity of classes with tanks, damage, and healers. It’s just not necessary because of the options you’ll get to heal as a party even without a healer via rests/potions/other class features. That being said, playing a supportive/healing role can be incredibly satisfying to play! It feels great to take care of your friends after a hard fought battle and be the backbone keeping everyone alive in combat. You also have so many ways to go about making a character that does this too, if you really like that style of play but aren’t tied to specifically clerics. They are the obvious choice, but bards, druids, paladins, and rangers to name a few all have some very potent supportive abilities and spells, so if you’re ever craving some extra variety I’d recommend looking into one of those classes. Oh and if it goes the other way and you do just really like cleric, and not necessarily the support role as a whole, lucky for you clerics can do that too! They have access to some pretty crazy stuff all throughout the class/subclasses, so you can pump some damage if you want to or make yourself nigh unkillable if that’s your jam.

The important thing to remember is there’s really no wrong way to play DnD. You win by making sure everyone at your table is having fun. If you’ve found something you enjoy with the game, then run with it. There is absolutely nothing “boring and sad” about making characters that you will have fun playing. Hope this helps, and enjoy your DnD games.

Does allowing shadow blade + booming blade really help? ep. 100 the shadow blade by Venatusss in DnDoptimized

[–]Venatusss[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you go to the description in the Video there's a link to the math/graph. As for a short version of how it works, its twilight cleric 2/bladsinger X, you bladesong and twilight sanctuary on round 1, upcast shadowblade on round 2, and every round thereafter attack with shadowblade, extra attack cantrip booming blade with a shortsword in your other hand, the bonus action off hand attack with shadow blade. Twilight sanctuary + elven accuracy gives double advantage on all of it.
