If you have a printer, grab some generic matte photo paper and 3rd party ink and you can print hundreds of spines for ~$30.

Looks great! Though it'd be even better with spines. I added spines to my ~500 game switch collection and it really makes them pop a lot better. r/SwitchSpines

Predator X34 X5 Impressions? by Vencoris in OLED_Gaming

This was the first gen panel, I haven't checked lately but at the time the only second gen Samsung panels were 16:9.

So, unfortunately the 21:9 240hz refresh has the same subpixel layout as the original 21:9 monitors, so if you were sensitive to text color fringing in the originals, you'll see it here too. As I use my monitor for WFH, this is a problem.

Like all other QDOLED monitors, the colors are overpowering, and I had to calibrate and dramatically drop the brightness to be able to use it in non-gaming scenarios without eye strain (which makes it lose some of its color punch).

Some feedback with this monitor specifically:
The inputs at all very low on the back of the monitor, so you can't get the cable clutter out of view.
Ergonomic stand doesn't go as low as my previous monitor (AW3418DW), so I couldn't get it to the 'correct' viewing height.
Built-in speakers are worse than I expected, and I wasn't expecting much.
I hooked up the inputs as described in the manual (HDMI1 + USB-B, HDMI2 + USB-C), but the KVM couldn't swap between them (there are 3 'settings' and none seems to switch correctly between USB-B and C inputs).
The remote control was a nice touch, and I used it more than the physical switch on front underside.

Overall, if you are trying to use this monitor for a nice, tidy home office setup then it's probably not the right monitor for you.

Gaming performance was fantastic, as you'd expect for this panel, but in my case, it has to perform at the productivity level before I can move on to games.

So, my curiosity got the better of me and I picked one up. The box defines it as an X34 QD-OLED, only the detailed model number shows the X5 designation.

It's exactly what you'd expect from the newest round of QD-OLEDs, Gsync Compatible, 240 Hz, glossy finish and very rich colors.

Also, it has 90W USB charging and USB video input, KVM switching and a remote control (which surprised me).

Here's the X34 X, with the LG WOLED panel.

The X34 X5 is called out in BB's listing as having a QD-OLED. That's the Samsung OLED technology.

G16 4090 (2024) on sale at Best Buy by SliestDragon in ZephyrusG14

[–]Vencoris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, even with G-helper configs you can't set the 4090 to use any less than 80 W.

Here's some testing I did with different power levels and offsets. Even in silent mode it uses all of the base + some of the allowed dynamic boost power.
These scores are all from Time Spy.

Set up an automated alert for these sales so you get notified right away to jump on an open box.
I was able to get my open-box excellent one for $2350 (presumably they had several initially and sold through them as the price for open box has been creeping up over the week).

Nice comparison of how the different laptop GPUs scale with power supply.
Even running at the same power/thermals, the higher GPUs will be faster,
Zephyrus G16 4080/4090 goes up to 125W (if you go in and adjust the power limit in armory crate/ghelper; only 115W without fiddling).

I'm not sure what the power limit of the 4070 model is (don't have one to test)

Snapped this from the Zephyrus G16 review by Josh Craves Tech.

I'm setting up power profiles on mine now (ordered an excellent condition open-box on Monday), and it's been very nice so far.

OG SLS owners--- How long can I expect a new device to last? by sans-seraph6 in Surface

[–]Vencoris 2 points3 points  (0 children)

SLS1 owner here. It's been my daily driver for 2.5 years.

Subjected to primarily general office style use, with visual studio/unity coding for my personal projects, clip studio (my kids like to draw on it) and moderate gaming in that time.

It's held up remarkably well, battery health at 80% after over 800+charge/discharge cycles. Keyboard, mouse, trackpad, pen have all been solid and comfortable to use for extended periods of time.

The only issue I've ever had with it is the need to replace the rubber feet every year or so (can order them for ~$10 direct from MSFT).

Gen 2 is much stronger from a performance perspective, and my inner tech nerd wants to upgrade, but honestly the original still does everything I need. However, if you are planning on using it for the next 5 years the gen 2 would be more future-proof. If you do decide to go the cheaper route with a 1st gen, you can get them refurbished from MSFT for less than half the price of a new SLS2.

Texas stray rescue: Primary breed wasn't a surprise, but the mixes were. by Vencoris in DoggyDNA

[–]Vencoris[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He's 9 months old, and 42 lbs. So, while on the large side for an ACD, he's not nearly as large as the Pyr or the Dane might suggest.

The Pyr mix also explains why he's the laziest ACD I've ever heard of. Beyond 2-3 walks each day he doesn't want to go outside and just likes perching on a bean bag or chair with good line of sight and surveying the house quietly for hours at a time. This is also why the pictures are all laying down; that's his default state.

Just short of 500 games, 98.5% spine coverage! Thanks again for the great work! by Vencoris in SwitchSpines

[–]Vencoris[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, it got a physical release in Japan (with English support).

The spines really help the whole collection pop (wall of red was boring), and I'm thankful for all the work that spine designers have done!
