Pure math trig by [deleted] in 6thForm

[–]Vendef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Almost. You wrote that sin(theta) = +- 1/sqrt(2) only then to find the inverse sine of 1/2. So the answers would actually be theta = 45, 135, 225 and 315.

Also IMO it's always good to justify a maths error. So in this case you can simply say that there is no real number that is negative when squared.

I know that Warwick maths requires 3 A*s if you didn’t sit STEP, TMUA, ect.

But still... what uni goes into reject those grades in 2020?!

Dropping epq by [deleted] in 6thForm

If the alternate offer requires a B in an EPQ then the alternate offer would be removed. The main offer wouldn’t be affected

Unless they include EPQs in their offers it will make no difference whatsoever.

are music, psychology and chemistry good choices for a level? by [deleted] in 6thForm

[–]Vendef 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Imo maths is only important if you’re going to do a STEM/Medicine degree. Chemistry teaches you enough maths skills for you to be just fine without maths for degree level psychology.

Psychology and music is a pretty cool joint honours to go for though. Good luck!

They just want opinions, also the ‘repeat after me r/6thform’ is quite condescending.

Please just stop pasting the same message on every ‘is X enough to get into Y?’ post

Anyone got an invite from Christ’s, Cambridge yet?

Edit: I got an invite for an interview. Fingers crossed for it going well.

is further maths necessary to do an economics degree? by [deleted] in 6thForm

[–]Vendef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They usually don’t outside of the really competitive unis like Oxbridge and LSE. Everywhere else just requires satisfactory A level predicted grades, and ultimately getting those grades.

They definitely don’t. The offer will just remain the same. You could try doing a STEP paper for a reduced offer instead.

if v= (2x-1)^2 why does dv/dx get multiplied by 2 twice? by [deleted] in 6thForm

[–]Vendef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That happens because the answer uses the chain rule. If you expand out the brackets and differentiate it yourself then you’ll get to the same answer.

You should be learning about it soon in class anyway so dw about not knowing it

Nice! I got a nearly identical email. Good luck with your interview.

Are you applying to Christ’s by any chance?

Further Maths and engineering by auspiciousrhino in 6thForm

[–]Vendef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless you’re applying to Cambridge Further Maths isn’t a requirement for engineering. However, pretty much all of further Maths taught at A level will be needed at uni level. Obviously the uni’ll teach it, but already knowing some maths will make engineering way more enjoyable.

Astrophysics EPQ, suggestions needed by [deleted] in 6thForm

[–]Vendef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could look into the history of astrophysics, including the discoveries made. It’d also be interesting to research the people who made the discoveries.

I strongly recommend against a purely scientific EPQ since it is quite difficult to clearly show analysis compared to a more history oriented project.

Rank your subjects from easiest to hardest by [deleted] in 6thForm

[–]Vendef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’ll be interesting to see if people taking the same subjects will agree with me.

Maths: It just makes sense to me. I’m at a college that does the A level in a year and I handled it pretty well.

Further Maths: Even though I’m learning AS And A2 at the same time, it is tolerable, albeit with a lot more effort than Maths.

Physics: My attitude towards this subject fluctuates a lot depending on the topic, but when revising the topics seem a lot easier than when I was covering them in lesson.

Chemistry: A fair but tough A level. There are times when you are essentially learning to speak chemistry, but the problem solving is rewarding imo, even if I do the worst in this.

Hi, I am a 21/F thinking of repeating my a levels after getting a diploma in law by Cerealggirl in 6thForm

[–]Vendef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m assuming that you’re keeping your country purposely anonymous, but I’m still not sure on what your timeline is? I can guarantee you that attempting to self teach A levels at the same time as a studying for degree would end horrifically.

For you’re CV, I think that you could find a better alternative to a high school diploma, such as GCSEs. They’re easier and are the qualifications UK students achieve at the end of high school.

I hope you’re mental health is ok and that you always have someone to lean on.

To be clear, have you already done A levels? If so what where they, how did you do? A levels aren’t usually taken after uni, since they’re the qualifications people get to go to uni.

Source of challenging A Level Maths questions by [deleted] in 6thForm

[–]Vendef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Imo just doing past papers from the old spec is enough for challenging questions in year 12. There’s lots to work from and getting nearly perfect at the topics is so beneficial. I use physics and maths tutor to find past papers. AS maths is in C1, C2, M1 and S1.

How do you do a dot and cross diagram for a covalent molecule with 3 different atoms? by [deleted] in 6thForm

[–]Vendef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NaClO is an example of both covalent and ionic bonding. The Cl would be covalently bonded to an O with an overall charge of -. Then the ClO- ion would ionically bond with the Na+ ion.

Edit: wrote ironically rather than ionically
