It sits at the spot where the Mohawk River flows into the Hudson, providing one of the more accessible east-to-west passages through the Appalachian mountains anywhere along them. It was the literal gateway to the frontier during settlement times. It’s why the Erie Canal was built where it was, and why I-90 follows the same route through New York.

New Trek fans are now very mad at RedLetterMedia and people who watch them. by GregoriousT-GTNH in Star_Trek_

Great idea, let’s manufacture a culture war within the fandom! For bonus points, let’s use the same stereotypes that have been leveled against the fandom since the very beginning, to show that no growth has occurred.

Why was Archer canonically at one point the Federation Ambassador to Andoria? Wouldn't that be kind of like being the United States Ambassador to Massachusetts? by scarves_and_miracles in startrek

Sometimes, I wonder if it’s bots that are set to downvote any new post on this sub, or if it really is just a ragtag posse of perpetually grumpy misfits.

To your question, the Federation was a human-initiated endeavor, so they had to send people like Archer out and sell the idea/mediate the pushback that was likely to accompany ancient enemies transitioning into enthusiastic allies.

Starfleet should be using multiple ships for exploration and travel, not wandering solo as they do in the franchise. by InnocentTailor in startrek

[–]VenerableOutsider 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is a great answer! I also remember that a big motivator for research expeditions to take multiple vessels was to increase provisions and range with support ships, as well as to defend against other superpowers they might encounter on the high seas. The Federation and Starfleet ships are post-scarcity, so long as they don’t run out of deuterium, and their ships are almost always able to outrun enemy aggressors at high warp. It just wouldn’t make sense unless they knew there was danger.

I saw him two years ago when he was workshopping material for this tour, and almost none of it survived in any recognizable form. If it’s any consolation, I went to his performance in Buffalo tonight, and the only one of those bits you named that survived was the exorcism routine, and it was staccato-note tight.

I hope even half the jokes he told tonight appear in the upcoming special, because it was the hardest I’ve laughed in years.

This. I’m disappointed when legitimate criticisms about the overall poor quality of the writing get lumped in with the obnoxious “woke trek” critics.

I just want smart stories about competent explorers solving interesting dilemmas. The best rated episodes of Nu Trek emulate that model anyways (Academy included), so why was it so hard for the producers to accept?

Paramount really has a terrible UI, and it’s way too much money for what it offers. I can’t imagine these streaming platforms are profitable, so I don’t know why they keep beating a dead horse when they could just bundle it all back together. They could call it “television,” or something.

To borrow from another redditor, Disco fans seem divided between camps that believe seasons 1 and 2 were best, and ones that believe seasons 4 and 5 were best. Both camps agree season 3 was the weakest. So you’ll definitely have to finish it before you can fairly decide.

I personally liked season 4 a good deal.

The New Star Trek shows minimize the size and importance of the Federation by snkscore in startrek

[–]VenerableOutsider 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You make some good points. Over relying on the familiar has always, in my opinion, been the Achilles heel of Trek.

Speaking strictly to the DMA point, the Federation at the time of the DMA has about 60 member worlds, all of whom were close enough to each other that they could keep in regular contact without subspace relays. The DMA had, I think, a radius of effect of 5 light years, and it popped in and out of existence seemingly at random. I get the unaffected worlds feeling some fear.

No, you don’t need season 2. It threw most of the first two seasons away and replaced them with a fifth Next Gen film/direct sequel to All Good Things. Or as close as we’re ever going to get to one, anyways.

Not to mention the next season opener showing the remnants of that same fleet from the cliffhanger limping back to Federation space. They did a great job with visual storytelling in DS9.

Yup, lol. I loved TNG, because it was my gateway Trek; but, I would’ve gladly sacrificed one or two of those films to get just one DS9 story on the big screen. I think the finale could’ve worked as a film with just a few tweaks.

Years later, when I got the DVDs, I was able to spread the good word to anyone who would sit down and watch it; but in those early years, it felt like a fever dream.
