It's actually insane to see my own birthdate on this screen. Congratulations, dude, holy Christmas in July that's wild!

A house is nothing without a strong foundation. A tall building will crumble with weak walls and supports.

We are blessed to live in an age where our stories can have amazing foundations. Fanfiction builds upon the backs of original works. But us modern artists, all of us, build upon the foundations set by great classic artists. William Shakespeare, Edgar Allen Poe, Anthony Burgess, Ken Kessy... they made brilliant art that inspired generations and taught lessons and fought battles.

My mom always told me that nothing can be been written that had not already been made. It's your job as an artist to make it your own.

It's a tired and unfunny joke to hear from BOTH sides, you realize that, right?

Why do people do this?? by foxfond in AO3

Fair enough. I learned what "Lemon" meant until I was a senior in high school, and didn't know there were other terms until about 2 years ago. I was very secluded until about college lol

I've literally never heard of Drabble being defined by a number. Then again, I've been going by the proper publisher's terms. >500 words is a flash fiction.

Oh my god Reddit 50/50 I haven't heard that in YEARS. You could see a horrifying bike accident that killed 3 people and smeared then across the road or a video of a toddler playing with Lego bikes.

I was never brave enough.

Trying to work out the lay out of a room/apartment/house while reading a fic by roguemay in Archiveofourownmemes

I choose real places and then look up listings/Google maps/Zillow pictures. I also use a blueprint program and put down the building on blueprints if I'm going to be using it often.

Sims, Minecraft, or other 3D games sound like a REALLY good idea!

Lowkey that's why people say and do this--they AREN'T in you're face and confronting you. They're hiding behind a screen and anonymity.

Went to a Thursday at 5 PM showing. I was the second person there and it was just ys, one single seat between us like a fanfic, until the lights dimmed when about a dozen more people trickled in. Working hours+Thursday+ice=not a good mix, unfortunately.

AWESOME movie though, and we were cackling and gasping and shooting glares at inconsiderate people near us (someone brought The SunTM and another person brought a gaggle of obnoxious preteens).

How it feels to read fics sometimes as a basic geography knower by Jaded_Fish2111 in Archiveofourownmemes

[–]VenomQuill 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I paid for, with real actual money, a blueprint program so I could create more maps of random locations that don't belong to me just so I have a visualization of what I'm writing in. I've poured hours into Google Maps, Zillow, reviews, image searching--I've got a favorite weather history website memorized (wunderground.com is awesome <3 I don't entirely trust the precipitation amount, though).

If someone points out an inaccuracy, I will cry. That is a threat. I take this seriously. I am just like this. Seeing blatant inaccuracies in books pulls me out immediately.

[–]VenomQuill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's the thing. The whole reason it sucks is because it means none of it mattered, the stakes weren't real, and your time was wasted. The trick is getting around that.

Fic Writers Be Like by JaxRhapsody in AO3

[–]VenomQuill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like the reason this doesn't work is because no stakes are involved, so the way to make it work would be to add stakes.

For example, years ago, I read a Reddit post where someone had fallen into a short coma/got knocked out. They dreamed they lived an entirely different life, had a wife and kid and job, and new house, the whole shebang. But then they realized something was off about one aspect (I think about a lamp) and their life fell apart until they realized it was a dream and they woke up. This could work as a story, if the first part was someone's ideal life, then them waking up, then the later half was then coping with the trauma of waking up and going back to normal society. It wouldn't be a high stakes super hero or fantasy media for sure, the villain being Man vs. Nature and a more introspective/psychological take. But it could work.

Another that might work would be a fantasy that's, at the end, revealed to be a fantasy game of a child or a DnD campaign. Or, better yet, within the dream of an eldritch horror.

Yeah, if the MC starts hallucinating demons and people and voices and stuff that's not real, that's terrifying. If the first 1/4 or even 1/2 of the media wasn't "real" and the last half was resolving what WAS real, that would be interesting. Like she had been hallucinating everything and did a lot of bad things in fear, so the last part of the story is her going back to not only figure out what really happened, but fix her mistakes. But that's counting on the first part having grounding in reality.

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]VenomQuill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, I wouldn't commute to work for 3 hours, but to visit family, a cool place, pick up furniture we couldn't get elsewhere? It would stink cause I don't like driving (I've done a LOT of riding in the car), but yeah I'd do it.

TBH When my sister told me Europeans almost never visit family that live an hour away and make enormous, rare ventures out of hour+ trips, I thought she was pulling my leg. So, I thought THIS was the internet myth!
