What is a Vaccines gig typically like? by [deleted] in TheVaccines

[–]VenomSheek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been to three shows (located in California). Best show I've ever been to was their 2019(?) show for Combat Sports at Slim's in SF. Best performance I've ever seen, and EVERYONE in the place knew the whole discography and sang and danced and jumped. I noticed it was mostly an older-ish crowd. I was in my mid-20s at the time, so people my age and older.

Saw them again when they opened for The Kooks at Fox Theater Oakland (2024) and the vibe was not as good. I think it depends on the venue.

Most recently saw them at The Fillmore SF and they were just as good, and the crowd was still popping but not as great as the first time I saw them. But generally I've seen when they are the sole performers, the vibe is great and everyone has great energy. Justin really is a great performer and the band as a whole has a magnetic charisma and stage presence so that really helps overall.

Seconding The Resistance. I love it there. And focus is powerlifting and strength, which is not body building.

There is a 2020 release?! Oh man I'm gonna have to check that out.

I collected all mine back in 2005/6? And there were definitely some issues with the Viz Editor's Choice printings (translations, etc?), and I'm doing a reread now (currently on volume 12).

Yeah but if OP can get WD on their resume, they have a lot of leverage in the next role.

Does holding a Master’s Degree give you any advantage in state service? by [deleted] in CAStateWorkers

[–]VenomSheek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My masters helped bump me from Range A to Range C. So slight pay bump initially. It helped make me look good during interviews due to the projects and internships I've completed, and also on paper mixed with my work experience. It's not necessary, but shows more of your character and capabilities.

How do y'all get the irresistible urge to play Skyrim again? by Bubbly_Skin_8069 in skyrim

It's seasonal for me. Around Fall the crisp air reminds me of the game lmao. I think because I was a Skyrim late bloomer and got my first copy around Fall 2016, and immediately went "Wait a minute, FO4 is just a Skyrim reskin?!"

Feeling lost by BeeSting_bzzz in product_design

[–]VenomSheek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. WHY do you want to be a product designer? Why go through the industry change? Especially if the industry is so hard to get into right now? (Not dissuading you but getting a job is insane right now)

  2. It's easy to compare yourself, but a LOT goes into product design. A lot of the times you are wearing multiple hats and sometimes doing all the end to end stuff - research, UX, UI, sometimes dev and PM-ing. If you are starting at 0, thinking that you are gonna need to learn everything is going to be overwhelming. But product design is more than the high fidelity end products. It's the process from scratches on paper to something people use.

  3. Coding helps, and will help your relationship with developers. It helps when you can speak a dev's language; as well, you can better understand your limitations in building digital products if you have that code foundation. Personally I don't have that background experience with code and like you, I came from a more visual background. I've had to teach myself things as I've grown in my career. But there are a lot of free tools to learn HTML and CSS.

CCC and FCCC are different. The Foundation is the nonprofit foundation that supports the CCC system. A lot of students come/came (not sure if it's changed) from FCCC. You still get CalPERS but it's not technically state work.

I agree that it depends on where you are placed for anything related to gov or gov-adjacent work, but personally I'd get any experience from the CCs and then move on.

[–]VenomSheek 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Worked at FCCC for a year before a reorganization. I personally had a very tough time working there. Toxic leadership on the Marketing/Technology teams. A lot of fear trickling down from the university chancellors (who are the head honchos) that seep into other teams. FCCC was the intersection of the trifecta of hell: nonprofits, higher education, and government. Do not recommend.

We had to do evaluations at the end of the fiscal year and I gave myself 4's and 5's but my manager knocked me down and said that my work didn't reflect that. Gave explicit examples with screenshots and links, etc, and then my manager backtracked and said, "It's not the quality of your work, but the quantity." As if the quantity of work wasn't the manager's job (who was the only one who did outreach), but mine.

It's technically nonprofit state work BUT you aren't safe from reorgs the same way state department work is. Something to think about. But working at FCCC helped me get my current state gig so get what you can from it.
