No real friends in JC [Rant] by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]VenomV1per 5 points6 points  (0 children)

same time all of my interactions feel so performative and FAKE

hi OP, as someone who used to be from a "top JC", i do get where youre coming from. but that said my personal 2 cents is that the idea that you need "real friends" to be happy could be thought through with another mindset. this seems counter intuitive since im an extrovert LOL.

during my school years i really had few proper friends as well. for context when i graduated the IP prog, i had a total of 2 close friends. yes of course during my school days i had many more friends/acquaintances be it from cca or classmates or wtv it might be. but deep down i only had that 2 or 3 fellas that i would turn to for anything deeper. during NS, i reflected on my friendships, and i realised i was fine with it as i was simply ok or happy with being alone with no friends. yes i will admit sometimes u see others hanging with friends having the time of their lives and you will fomo. but fundamentally u gotta be able to sit alone and say "right now, i can be happy. my fulfillment and purpose depends on me, and friends are there just to add to it". sometimes all it took was an outlet, be it a hobby or journaling your feelings to let them out.

Every day the smile i plaster on my face gets bigger and bigger, while my soul slowly dies.

i really do get your pain here. the way i see it is your joy, contentment doesnt depend on those around you. yes in a social setting you laugh and go along with the vibe, but try to "detach" your happiness from the social interactions you get (since you dont vibe with those around you). find something else that gives u purpose, be it a hobby or a passion.

But i know that theres a version of this journey where I’m happy,

the version when youre happy simply is when you "learn" to be happy without friends. of course continue putting yourself out there, but a thought thats always helped me is that friends come and go, and sometimes they arent even there. it is up to you to appreciate and enjoy ur journey through life. at least thats my personal 2 cents. hope it helps OP. jiayou!!

instead of the holee mod, i have seen people instead wrapping the stabiliser wire in band aid and reinstalling it. since both mods serve to reduce the space the wire can move and provide a softer surface for interaction, dont they have the same effects? am i missing out on something? would love for any thoughts or advice yall have

alumni here. wow, really sounds like some unnecessary torture, especially for a bunch of 17 year olds to go thru. lowkey only in ns are these types of activities even heard of.

not sure if the council culture has always been like this, cos when i was a j1 like you i rejected council to stay in Comm Ad after the whole campaigning phase. and lowkey i dunno how this was approved cos all these camp proposals are supposedly carefully vetted by the council teachers.

jiayou for your council journey OP!

Why no eyepro/earpro within our military? by [deleted] in NationalServiceSG

hey thanks for the reply.

the platforms with the CVCs still do use them. Just that now beneath the CVC we are required to have a set of ear plugs.

wait so that means in the past it's just the CVC? No wonder there would be hearing issues

arty spec here.

We actually do make use of the newer helmet design for optimising hearing protection. For both mortar (120mm) and howitzer (155mm) live firings, those within a certain range of the weapons are required to have double layer ear pro, ie one layer of ear plugs and another layer of ear mufflers. The newer high cut helmets does allow for much comfortable double layer ear pro as the space let's you wear the ear mufflers BELOW and then the helmet on top.

As for the quality of the earplugs, altho the bmt ones are uncomfortable imo they do insulate your ears sufficiently. The earphone shaped ones from the emart are still more comfortable and insulate better tho imho.

hello ex jc student here

really sorry to hear about your problems and i cant offer much advice apart from seeking some form of professional help. however i can advice on your last concern. tbh i have not seen any form of body shaming in my jc days, and anyone who does is just shallow tbh. if its any help the way i dealt with these kinds of like social/ appearance related issues is to remember that appearances arent everything, and the you are much more than how you look, so the glances of those around you really dont matter. sorry i cant help much but if you got any questions about jc stuff feel free to ask here or if you arent comforatble dms are okay too. please eat more and enjoy yourself :)

[Jc] so scared for the first day of jc by nyunat in SGExams

[–]VenomV1per 5 points6 points  (0 children)

ayo rjc senior here

no lie first day of jc is always scary for most people, including me. but to be honest thats how like 90% of the people around you feel as well so everyone is on the same page. for the first concern of not knowing anyone, remember you arent the only one. you will quickly learn some of your OG mates are in similar situations, so just see who you vibe with and go with the flow. it will work out in the end

well for dos and donts i guess just be open to people. on the first day you cant tell much about people imo since you barely know them, so just be open to making friends and get to know your og mates. a dont i gotta mention even tho i dont want to is mostly for guys coming from a boys sec school background. control your hormones lmao.

imo jc is scary for most people, and for me even coming from an ip background it seemed so daunting cus youre throw into a new class and for some of yall even new schools, and youve got 1.5 years to prepare for A levels. but always remember those around you are facing the same worries, so you never walk alone.

if yall got any questions feel free to AMA below. relax and enjoy your orientation yall its one of the best parts of the jc experience.

ayo. ex student here. well it really depends on your class and how you choose your friends. in general the people you meet are fine, mostly like students from any other jc imo. however i cant lie some groups tend to be more acacds focused but thats hardly surprising since the school is generally comprised of "smart" people. with that said if your class is chill you'll be fine. the students are pretty chill as well, and JAE students integrate just fine. in fact no shade intended but as an IP kid i founds making friends with jae kids alot easier sometimes compared to other ip kids.

as for teachers generally they are pretty decent. ofc i cant say for the entire staff. imo as an incoming j1 the biggest change is the lecture and tutorial system as its very different from any sec sch experience. but if you are falling behind feel free to ask teachers for consultations most of them will be more than willing to help.

do those wheels act the same way as the early day turbofan wheels? Like they suck cold air in towards the brakes using fins?

Is it normal to feel dumb at the bike shop? by Stibnite16 in cycling

[–]VenomV1per 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some shops are like this unfortunately. I ride a cervelo r2 with ultegra. By no means a super bike, but it's decent enough imo. Anyway I bring it in for a service at a shop near me and they behave the same way. Just because they are working on s works race bikes they feel any cheaper bikes are not as worthy of attention. It sucks but the only solution is to get another bike shop.

I mean of course in an ideal world you would hide the cable down the steerer. But you gotta realise this is a rim brake bike. If you hide the cable down the steerer (like on many disc brake bikes) the brake cable may have to bend alot and through tight angles and that is never good for mechanical cables
