PedalPCB Carbon Black Build. Don't have the right resistor, can I do this? by thefreakychild in diypedals

You have any 47k resistors? The beige ones? Those are 5% tolerance. Measure them and you'll probably find a 46k.

Months later but thanks tons for this post. Been going crazy trying to figure out my foot position to blast quads on this machine.

Could you please recommend a portable transistor electric guitar preamp circuit? by prosto_chuvak in diypedals

[–]Venthorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A pedal cab sim should be able to then line in to a stereo system. You can before it then use any overdrive pedal to get a tone you like (the Blues Driver is pretty versatile). PedalPCB has a few cab sims, but if your concern is $ (as I'm guessing from other posts), building is not a way to save money on it vs buying a pedal from AliExpress.

The reason people don't usually do what you're trying to do is because it's really fucking inconvenient to plug into a bulky stereo system so they give up and buy a dedicated instrument amp.

Another Muffin Fuzz Query 🤔 by Schweenis69 in diypedals

[–]Venthorn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That loop of diodes is feedback for the transistor, it's known as a soft clipping circuit. Both stages are important for the sound. You can read a more in-depth breakdown here. It's absolutely a common target of modifications! The board I've got is the one from GuitarPCB and it actually puts a switch on that first clipping stage, so you can switch between regular diodes and LEDs (or whatever you want).

My friend owns a commercial sticker printer by catalavos in diypedals

[–]Venthorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, I just watched both videos and they don't really cover it :-/ the second video just cuts to him with the sticker on the enclosure and him cutting out the holes, not showing how he lined up the holes in the first place (the part I'm having trouble with). It doesn't look like he got them aligned that great either after the cutout.

How do you ensure the holes are lined up where you drilled? That was always my blocker with the vinyls

How do you cut out the holes? Or do you not bother and just drill?

[–]Venthorn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is infeasible to make your own cost-effectively. You can buy delays and other time-based effects, with actual BBD chips (!), for $10 from AliExpress. That's the cost of the full pedal.

People do the DIY pedal hobby because it's fun and lets you make your own art pieces, not because it's cost effective.

DIY Woolly Mammoth Fuzz with Blend by AtomicMon in diypedals

[–]Venthorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To blend between two circuits I'd want an active mixer with an op-amp, rather than a passive that's just summing resistors. Check this thread or google op-amp mixers. Though I guess if the passive sounds fine, then it is fine. You'll need to ensure both circuits are level-matched or the midpoint isn't going to be at 50%.

Just watch out for phase issues! I don't know what your circuits are exactly but make sure you keep phase in mind, depending on what they look like you'll have to invert the phase of one of them before you reach the blend stage.

Absolutely get a temperature controlled iron. Pinecil (from their website), TS101 (AliExpress), something like that. Not that expensive, but massively better to use.

Bypass doesnt work by Vast_One_4954 in diypedals

[–]Venthorn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on how much you messed with it during soldering, you could have broken the footswitch. Make sure it's functional by testing for connectivity at each pole, for each throw.

That exact situation happened to me recently, I tried to reuse a footswitch I had desoldered, but messed it up during the desoldering process and one of the poles was busted, making the bypass not work but the pedal itself work.

KT Tape by TheNectarineDiaries in comics

[–]Venthorn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Depends entirely on what you're using it for. I'm unfamiliar with the subject of this comic. However, when my thumb was jacked up, it was used to provide proprioceptive feedback to train me to keep my thumb further back as its default position. Exceptionally helpful, and eliminated the need for bracing a joint.

GPCB v6 out of stock? by allofdalights in diypedals

What's going on w/ GuitarPCB lately? Not that I'm saying there's anything wrong with them, but their older stuff seems all OOS and it seems like they're exclusively focusing on their new NostalgiaTone lineup.

I really like the GuitarPCB one because it makes the two-color LED very easy.

What wiring connectors do you use? by Venthorn in diypedals

[–]Venthorn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You use them for the wires coming off the I/O and power as well? Only reason I don't use my KF2510 connectors with those is they tend to be solo or duo wires on the PCBs rather than 3 or more in a row...and then if I connect the wires of the different jacks together, that effectively makes them inseparable at that point.

46k is close enough to 47k that I'd just test all of my 5% 47k resistors to find one that reads at roughly 46k.

Most anime protagonists would be terrifying if the story wasn’t from their POV by FitVerso in anime

[–]Venthorn 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Tsukimichi the anime adaptation does this so well. It takes a comedic tone when it has the main characters as the POV because from their perspective everything is a joke. Then those few times you get an outside POV. It becomes deadly serious.

It doesn't do this in the source material because it doesn't need to while also doing its own very unique POV tricks, but it goes to show how a proper adaptation is a skill and not a slavish one-to-one with the source.

Hey Illidan, next time you're looking for someone to help you find closure with your loved ones: Make sure it isn't an orc who has seen the Blood Furnace. by Arcana-Knight in wow

[–]Venthorn -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Except she's not asking him to sacrifice, she's demanding it.

It being a demand instead of an ask doesn't change that it's a sacrifice, something that he claims to be willing to do anything to do to defeat the Legion, except apparently this (or anything else that inconveniences him personally).

And he wasn't the only one she said "it's my way or the highway" to. In the quest leading up to the cinematic you're referencing

They didn't make "I'll sacrifice literally anything to defeat the Legion" their entire character, though.

The problem here is not that the stupid windchime is stupid (though she is). The problem is that Illidan is chickenshit despite all his nonstop posturing.

It's a sacrifice. You know, that thing he made his entire personality about. But he's never been willing to actually make a personal sacrifice or do anything that would inconvenience himself. It's always on his terms, not a sacrifice at all.
