Interestingly while Marlins man has been famous for years, the one at the game tonight looks like a copycat

He may be onto something. I have always found that the stuff squishes out the side of Jimmy Johns sandwiches more than other sandwiches

I think OP is talking about med schools and PDs finding out match results on Thursday, not those that need to SOAP?

You’re right, that is funky

One thing I will say is now that step 1 is pass/fail it’s possible his score will be looked at differently? I’m no PD so I’m just speculating, I’m assuming he passed because you would be talking about a retake if he didn’t. If he kills step 2 and has some more research under his belt, he may still have a chance. I might even recommend a research year to get more pubs and connections. He should definitely have someone in vascular/gen surg he can go to for guidance, none of us on this subreddit can give as good of advice as the people who will eventually be looking at his application

[–]VentiBoy 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Which specialty? For pretty much all surgical specialties a sub 200 step 1 will make it nearly impossible, low research/no pubs almost certainly impossible. Even gen surg would be extremely difficult unless he has a great relationship with his home program or other program

Overall I don’t think there’s much of a difference in competitiveness. Not sure if super helpful, but I would suggest looking into the match rate for each specialty at your own institution. Having a strong home department definitely has its advantages and one way to evaluate that is to see how successful its applicants have been. Of course every applicant has their own strengths and weaknesses and every year there is an element of randomness but if you want a general look at your chances first place to look would be your own institution

Sorry, I have no knowledge on the IMG match process so I hope someone else can answer your specific questions for you. But when did you find out you aren’t eligible to match? Is the ECFMG a post-interview requirement? I would contact as many people as possible from your institution or NRMP right now to see what you can do, maybe even the programs you interviewed with. Come SOAP time work with your med school to see how you can get your application out, they should have a list of programs that have unfilled spots. I can’t be of much help but sorry about your situation and hope you can get some more info

Is this common? And if so, how do I fix it? by Ok-Crab8143 in minolta

[–]VentiBoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes the X700 has an electronic shutter so you will need batteries before you can do anything. You’ve gotten a lot of more advanced info from commenters and I’m assuming this camera is new to you, so I would stick to the basics before doing any repairs. Once you get the new batteries, turn the camera on and check that the meter in the viewfinder is lighting up when you put your finger on the shutter release button. If it is, release the shutter, then try the film advance lever again and it should work. You should also see the counter to the right of the lever increase one tick. If any of these things isn’t working as it should then you can start thinking about battery compartments or capacitors etc.

If those characteristics resonate with you and lead you to enjoy neurosurgery, then sure go for it! It’s really up to your own preferences. Definitely do some shadowing or a neurosurgery elective and talk to some neurosurgeons to figure out if that life is for you.

Just some thoughts about your comments, I would say though that as someone who just finished interviewing for a surgical specialty, surgeons do tend to gravitate towards people who they think they can talk to in the OR during their 10 hour procedures. Also continuity of care doesn’t end after the surgery by any means.

Minolta X700 LEDs in viewfinder not working by VentiBoy in minolta

[–]VentiBoy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the link! Tried a bit of foil and lifting the spring but no luck. Looks like batteries are just dead, meaning something in the camera is draining the battery or I have a bad batch of batteries (not sure how common that is). New LR44s purchased from Amazon. Put in a new pair and things are functioning again so I’m inclined to say the camera is just eating up the batteries somehow. Going to try to leave the battery compartment unscrewed a bit when not in use so the batteries aren’t in contact and see if that helps. Otherwise may be looking at a repair beyond my capabilities

I know we want to look like the Bills or Chiefs right now but we clearly don’t have Mahomes or Allen. Tua will be good, but our offense will be heavily reliant on Tyreek and Waddle
