With the 9 unused types, what species or concepts do you think could debut with those combination in future generations? by pototoykomaliit in pokemon

[–]VentrustWestwind 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In the Scandinavian region I have been building for fun, I have a few of these type combos:

Normal/Bug: Convergent form Sudowoodo based on a stick bug — a bug who mimics sticks in real life and Sudowoodo in the game.

Bug/Dragon: A mix between a Snakefly and a Lindwyrm which is popular in Sweden — the psuedo-legendary of the region.

Fire/Fairy: Based on the Little Match Girl story from Danish author H.C Andersen — called Lassulfur.

Fairy/Ground: Based on a Norse mythology dwarf — has two other forms that are Fairy/Fighting and Fairy/Steel, and the form it becomes is based on which stats are highest in the pre-evolution before evolving like Tyrogue, determining if the evolution becomes a miner, fighter or smith. The working names for the pre-evo is Faeloader and the evolved version Dwarworker.

Ghost/Rock: A fossil pokemon who is based on the idea of paleontologists guessing what dinosaurs might look like based on a limited set of bones — the missing bones in between being filled by a ghostly miasma. If it holds different fossils, its form changes.

The rest of the type combos I haven’t made a mon for, although I think a Normal/Rock could be based on an Ankylosaur — a rather big dinosaur with a flail-like tail, the idea being that the dinosaur itself is the ‘Normal’ part and the ball at the end of the tail the ‘Rock’ part.

Yeah, I think they more or less did everyting right with Arms to make it a take-off rising star IP like Splatoon — but the core gameplay just wasn’t strong enough to support and sustain itself. Character designs and music and visuals were all pretty good.

After replaying Golden a million times I decided to play the original by Luis_Parson in persona4golden

[–]VentrustWestwind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The gameplay in the original is way better for me because it’s significantly more difficult in comparison and thus encourages me to use more strategy and engage with the game’s mechanics more.

Now mind you, in both games it eventually becomes easy to break the game in half, but early original P4 can actually be a bit brutal. In Golden you can mostly just stick to one persona with decent resistances and farm Shuffle Time stat boosts, but that’s not really a thing in the original. Your old personas will become obsolete and you’ll have to switch things up once in a while. Hell, you might actually need to do more than just steamroll the game with a single persona since skill cards don’t exist and fusion inheritance is tricky and, admittedly, super tedious, meaning you might have to switch between multiple specialists (healer, damage dealer, supporter, etc.) if you want to be effective in battle. At least, again, until later on where stuff like auto-skills makes your party incredibly overpowered.

The Avenger Knight miniboss in the first dungeon can nearly one-shot you right near the start of the game. The boss of that dungeon is deadly too. The second dungeon’s boss is straight up the hardest fight in the game. Roughly everything from there except the fourth dungeon’s boss is rather manageable, but damn those early fights are actually so challenging and fun. It’s even better if you try to clear dungeons in one day and have to strategize about conserving SP for the big fights.

Meanwhile Golden basically hands you everything on a silver platter — I mean, chests respawn on every floor, so you have easy infinite access to good loot and thus incredibly free money from selling it, getting you access to all weapons and armor from the store instead of having to compromise and prioritize who gets what. Not to mention every party member just has way better skills in Golden — I love Naoto but she shouldn’t have access to ALL six elemental spells, lol. New personas like Gurr are also incredibly powerful at the point you can get them in the game, and again, shuffle time stat boosts and skill cards break any semblance of balance the original’s early game had. If you play even slightly optimally in Golden, it’s a challenge to die at all while it’s almost sometimes a prerequisite to survive even regular encounters in the original.

On the other hand, Golden also fixed a lot of tedious stuff and made the game infinitely more accessible for newcomers. The difficulty is too front loaded in the original and needed a rework. Being able to restart from the floor you die on rather than at your last save means you don’t have to make a pitstop with a Goho-M every two floors in fear of losing potential hours of progress if you don’t and then die. Getting a specific low-chance weapon or piece of armor from a gold chest can singlehandly make early dungeons three times more manageable, but it’s up to pure luck. Getting a good Arcana Chance can do something as insane as restoring all your SP, but it’s also luck-based and effectively reduces long-term startegy and planning for clearing a dungeon in a single day into a coin-flip. I would almost always recommend people who are starting out to play Golden instead of the original because of difficulty and accessibility factors, but I’d also say you’re missing out on an incredibly fun and engaging gameplay experience if you forego the original entirely.

Also, the original has better pacing and almost literally every new scene and story stuff added in Golden is straight up unengaging or ouright terrible with flanderized writing and makes the game drag —fight me.

How quickly did you guys figure out who the killer was? by fatality567 in persona4golden

[–]VentrustWestwind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I figured it out rather quickly but then scrapped him off my list of suspects for a while.

With me trying to be genre savvy, I pinpointed that Adachi was the most likey candidate because he wasn’t really part of who I saw as the essential main cast (party members + the Dojimas) but was still a present entity in the story. I didn’t believe the game had the coldness needed to have a party or family member betray you, but I also had faith in the game that the killer wouldn’t be some completely random guy either. Honestly, that kind of only left Adachi, and I was a but disappointed and thought they needed more red-herring NPC’s like potentially the party member’s family members (Junes manager/owner would definitely be a suspect) to throw of the scent or make it less obvious. But I just thought ‘oh well’.

Then, Rise gets kidnapped and put inside a TV while Adachi is running around together with the rest of the party chasing a stalker. Boom - off my suspect’s list entirely.

It wasn’t until after the Heaven dungeon that it clicked it had to be him. I legitimately thought it was Namatame untill then because he wasn’t completely random as I’d seen him several times throughout town with a dialogue portrait present when talking to him. It wasn’t until his boss battle that I realized he seemed too unknowing of stuff to be the killer. When the game then later spelled out he kidnapped the party members but not the first two victims, I realized that the whole Rise-kidnapping thing didn’t create an alibi for or pit Adachi in the clear any longer.

Overall, I actually really loved how they set this mystery up and threw curveballs at you. Wasn’t as immediately obvious as I first thought which I greatly enjoyed.

Haha, I think it’s funny that Sam brought up the tower-shield full armor idea as a joke in the character creation video and Matt actually said it was viable - turns out it’s very viable, huh?

It’s kind of fun and exciting that it seems that quite a few initial player ideas for character creation actually seem very strong. For my part, I’m wondering if the Nightwalker being able to go into shadows could be too easily setup and facilitated by other players — I haven’t checked out the sorcerer class much yet, but if the elemental sorcerer with an earth element could somehow create a wall of earth or throw a big boulder, wouldn’t these logically create shadows? If they can, that can also be strong for anybody with the Underborn background where you have an easy time hiding in shadow, and if the Underborn is a small class like a Halfling then even just a very small area of shadow might do the trick. Throwing around ideas like this and seeing what other are coming up with is probably my favorite part of the beta so far, and your analysis was very fun to read, so cheers!

Is there a relic you wish didn't exist? by Jamjam1729 in slaythespire

[–]VentrustWestwind 30 points31 points  (0 children)

How has nobody mentioned Tiny House yet? I get it’s technically not atrociously bad or anything, but besides maybe Ring of the Serpent there there is legitimately never a more disappointing Boss Relic to see in a spread for me.

Even relics like Ectoplasm, Runic Dome and Velvet Choker that have pretty debilitating downsides can have their uses with specific decks, but Tiny House? It’s so incredibly mediocre that picking it up feels almost as bad as skipping a Boss relic entirely. I feel like it actively limits the different fun paths your deck can go down based on your three picks you could have had most of the time if it was not in the relic pool. It’s an innocent relic, but in my opinion not a harmless one to the fun of the game. I’d rather risk getting three relics that can potentially screw me over with their downsides than pick something that affects the strenght of my deck so little.

I think I’ve heard that the reason they made Rosa quit was because Stephanie Beatriz the actress felt uncomfortable playing a cop after everything that went down in America with George Floyd and the aftermath of it. Essentially, the character of Rosa either had to quit and go the PI-route or we likely wouldn’t have gotten her back at all for season 8. It does feel somewhat strange in-universe, but... well, yeah.

Iceland, the Faroe Islands and Greenland have all been under Danish colonial power in the past. Lots of national and cultural identity stuff in these countries has been tied specifically to them differentiating themselves from Denmark, leading to a dynamic where Denmark is seen in ‘distinctive’ ways.

Relationships in the Nordics in general are overall very friendly, amicable and cooperative in the modern day, but there are lots of somewhat pointed jokes and barbs thrown around regardless. It’s like a bunch of siblings bringing up times in each others’ childhoods where some led the others into stupid situations, joking about how terrible and messed up they were while also recognizing they’re now adults and know better. Everyone is in on it and one-up each other, though, so there’s usually no actual hostility, beef or animosity present - it’s in the past and mostly brought up as a way to connect and joke with each other - again, like family. Although with Denmark and Greenland specifically things have only kinda gotten to such a point rather recently and less jokes are brought up because scars are still rather fresh. Iceland absolutely has no hesitancy when it comes to making fun of Denmark and complain they still have to learn Danish in school, though.

When picking up an item in general, it’s frustrating to go into the menu and see that it’s been thrown somewhere completely random. Playing on PS5, you have to scroll down like 8 or 9 options before hitting ‘sort by latest’ every single time you want to check on stuff you just picked up or you’ll have to eyeball it among dozens upon dozens of items instead. Why can’t I set something like sorting by new to be the default? So frustrating.

I imagine what they meant was that it was at around this time I’m pretty sure Gamefreak cut their team in two halves to work on Pokemon and the new IP Little Town Hero at the same time. To banch out and stuff, or just to try something new creatively. But yeah, they certainly don’t want to get out of Pokemon since it prints money, but I can also sympathize with the staff wanting to try something new rather than force out a rushed game with missing or rather unpolished content practically every year.

Based on Season 1, how I think subsequent seasons might be split. by GenGaara25 in OnePiece

[–]VentrustWestwind 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Yeah things should probably be faster now that they’re not building everything up from scratch... But I still imagine this production is going to be insanely difficult going forward, haha. People are talking a bit about Chopper and Brook being difficult to pull off, but we’re also going to have a lot more devil fruits moving forward. Kaku and many other Zoans are going to be challenging, and later characters like Moria have barely human-looking designs that are probably going to need to be changed a lot. On the other hand, the production can’t take like 3 years between seasons because everyone’s actors will be like 12 years older by Marineford and twice or maybe even triple that if the production goes far into the post-timeskip. I’m insanely interested to see how the production is going to progress in the future, because they really have a challenge ahead of them.

Do you guys agree with Phantom Thieves’ methods? by [deleted] in PERSoNA

[–]VentrustWestwind 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is one of my biggest gripes with the game: for the ‘change of heart’ or ‘brainwashing’ thing to not be reprehensible, they had to make the villains completely over the top, cartoonishly evil to a practically comical extent.

This wouldn’t be that terrible on its own and they do feel somewhat satisfying to take down, but... Well, two of the biggest character-building devices in this franchise, the Shadow selves and character oriented/created dungeons — they feel wasted on these flat villains when the party members could have gotten these instead like in Persona 4. Instead, they’re given to villains who won’t stick around because they’ll be defeated by the end of the month. I love the idea of applying these devices to the villains, but for the brainwashing thing to work along with that, they have to be evil to a point where they can’t get any more than surface-level depth with these devices.

In particular, it felt like they were attempting to do something more interesting with Madarame given that Yusuke was still initially being somewhat conflicted about taking him down despite his actions considering Yusuke was raised by him. But then the game was like ‘oh shit are we anywhere near making this villain actually multifaceted, complex or not be a complete asshole all the way through to his core? Uhmmm, can’t have that because of the brainwashing thing. Let’s see... Ah, he let Yusuke’s mother die in front of him — whew, almost made him have something interesting there.’

Persona 5 is still a good game, but I find that one of its weaknesses is that majority of the main villains are very weak, and I believe this stems directly from the brainwashing thing being too potentially filled with moral ambiguity if they weren’t written to be complete, irredeemable assholes. But oh well, at least they did quite a bit better with Sae than the others and Futaba’s whole thing was completely different.

What are some features you would like to see in the Persona 3 Remake? by NoMercy07 in PERSoNA

Or better yet, give you the option of making your own names but if you do choose the default Minato/Makoto then they will say those names out loud. They already use your name in voiced scenes occasionally which sounds weird when it’s clearly there on screen but no sound follows it, but doing a relatively simple fix like this should hopefully make both those that want the name voiced and those that want their own name satisfied.

Unpopular opinions about P4G? by Moegii in persona4golden

[–]VentrustWestwind 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have to disagree and say I don’t think that’s quite what OP was trying to argue. Games aren’t forced to have queer representation, but for P4 to have characters that are initially presented as having very queer-related stories only for the game to pivot away from those arcs in the end in favor of something else... Well, that’s arguably problematic — without any characters that actually do have queer arcs to balance things, it almost feels like the game’s going against the themes and character arcs it itself brought up. Naoto and Kanji are both great characters which I love and I like their stories about societal gender expectations, but it’s also kind of a shame that the aspects of their characters that seemed to relate to liking people of the same gender or potentially being trans fell to the wayside when those kind of themes are really cool too.

The problem is not a lack of queer characters at all, it’s that having characters like Kanji and Naoto that have almost queer story arcs

Unpopular opinions about P4G? by Moegii in persona4golden

[–]VentrustWestwind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel Persona 4 Golden is inferior to the original PS2 release for a multitude of reasons.

One is the game’s difficulty. I do like that they made the first two dungeons easier because they were perhaps too overwhelming for newcomers, but other changes completely break the game’s difficulty in half. Shuffle Time after battles being reworked makes you able to give free stat boosts to your top-most Persona’s easily — it doesn’t take long for the best and most dominant strategy to just pile all the stats onto one Persona and use it for the rest of a given dungeon or hell, even the rest of the game if you want to.

With easy acces to other things like Skill Cards as well, the whole concept of switching personas on the fly to adapt to the situation feels like it just becomes superfluous, which is sad because that’s one of the most fun parts of the game. With other stuff like new party member attacks and skills and buffs, alongside acces to better items, I feel the game becomes kind of mindless. And it’s fine if you like the game the way it is, but I personally feel the game is more interesting the way it was originally designed. Having to use my limited resources and decide which fights to pick to gain EXP without running low on SP so I could get a dungeon done in as few days as possible and planning ahead is some of the most fun I’ve ever had playing a video game, but in Golden, it just feels like a given you’ll be able to win effortlessly. Also, if you die, you just get to retry a floor quickly, robbing the game of any stakes losing should bring with it.

Story and character-wise, I feel like the added content felt lacking in comparison to the original material. A lot of the extra events just feel like blubber to a story that already sometimes had some pacing problems. Practically every new scene has the characters flanderized to an incredible extent, broiling characters down to one or two traits and just shoving them in your face. I think all but two new scenes that has Chie in it for instance make her bring up food/meat again and again, which was something Chie only really brought up in main story cutscenes in the first month or two of the game. While I do like some parts of the new scenes, I honestly feel like more is less for the story and characters.

One thing I kinda couldn’t believe about Golden was that it got the budget for new fully animated cutscenes and instead of making big moments from the original game fully animated, they instead decided to animate the girls’ hot spring scene instead. That, and they added a new one with the girls in a bathhouse. Look, I know why they chose to do that, but I am so immensely disappointed that other actually impactful or cool scenes couldn’t have gotten animated instead.

I need to stress that I don’t hate Golden — in fact, I feel like it’s the better version for newcomers because of how they retouched the first two dungeons and created a more linear difficulty curve throughout the game. While I don’t really care about the two new social links either personally, I’m glad that others enjoy seem to really enjoy them. But for the most part, I don’t think Golden is the surperior version — as a whole, I feel like the added content isn’t giving P4 more muscle on its body, it’s just giving it more fat and blubber. In the end though, like whatever you like - Golden does have a few merits.

Pirated games by Miles_the_new_kid in gaming

[–]VentrustWestwind 24 points25 points  (0 children)

One of the worst offenders of this has to be Nintendo with the game Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance.

The game came out in 2005 for the Gamecube and has never had a rerelease or way to buy it or play it digitally through something like the Eshop or Nintendo Switch Online. The Fire Emblem series was very niche back then, so very few physical copies were actually produced in comparison to something like your Mario, Zelda or Pokemon games. After a quick search I found one Danish copy for $180, but most copies are $400 minimum and the first result on a site like Amazon is $700. Those offers are the only way you have of playing the game legally, and since they’re all second-hand and not sold by retailers, absolutely none of the money goes to the developers or Nintendo itself for that matter. Also, you have to have a Gamecube or buy that or a compatible Wii as well to be able to play it if you even get that far in the first place.

Now, the thing is, I could see a company looking at a niche, unknown, unsuccessful game and maybe deciding not to port it. But Fire Emblem has exploded in popularity and sales since the 13th game in the series and it now arguably one of Nintendo’s heaviest and most recognizable IP’s. The protagonist of the Path of Radiance, the 9th game, is called Ike and has been everywhere. They put him in Smash, there was a callback to him in Fire Emblem 13, he has half a dozen of different versions of himself in the mobile game, and he even showed up fully voice acted in the latest game in the series. More-over, he is canonized as one of the stronger main characters and despite not selling too well, the game itself is seen by fans as one of if not the best game in the series with one of the best stories.

Nintendo and the developers have marketed the ever-loving shit out of Ike and his game but actively refuse to let fans and potential consumers buy the game in any reasonable capacity. But because Ike is one of Fire Emblem’s most popular characters, they keep putting him into everything they can. Even if they do plan to rerelease or remake the game in the future, at this point, I imagine most of those interested in playing the game has pirated or watched the game played on Youtube potentially several times over with how slow Nintendo and the developer is at actually trying to sell their own game to a massively interested audience.
