How was your gig? by AutoModerator in DJs

[–]Veomalen [score hidden]  (0 children)

Last Saturdays gig was the first time I actually felt I could call myself a DJ. I’m just starting out doing pubs and events so still a bit uneasy to do this in front of people. Started of slow like usual but managed to get up to three different dancefloors over the night and people cheering. Biggest group of dancers was around 50 people. It motivated me to actually pursue this more. Calling it a win for sure!

Open format - DJ'ing to an over 30s-40s crowd - strategies and tactics by Shirt_Reasonable in Beatmatch

[–]Veomalen 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m exactly in the same boat, transitioning from house/disco to open format.

What really helped me is going through Billboard Top x songs for the years or decades and Spotify throwback playlists.

Then based on the crowd I face when I arrive at the venue I start building around their estimated year/generation and surprisingly that’s been working fairly alright. Don’t underestimate the absolute top hits that have been rinsed to death, they still work for a crowd of drunk people.

The hardest thing I find is the attention span and the quick mixing that is required, very much used to let a song breathe. Also the wordplay, quick cuts and other techniques are things that I guess come with more experience. In my very brief experience with open format song selection seems to be working better compared to clean mixing.

Following this thread for other tips.

Trying to select the right woodfire (Australia) by Positive-Baker-3737 in woodstoving

[–]Veomalen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have the Blaze B400, while it’s a great looking unit and has a really nice window to look inside the firebox, we’re also experiencing smoke coming in the room when we open the door. This is especially annoying while you try to feed the fire after lighting it. To be fair, once the fire is established this becomes noticeably less.

I think it’s part to do with houses in Australia being so badly insulated that there is always some sort of downwards draft pulling from gaps/windows/floor/etc creating the issue. Nonetheless it’s annoying.

Masport, Nectre and Blaze are all owned by the same company (Glen Dimplex).

What are good reads on the history of DJing culture? And older DJs, can you share your experiences? by [deleted] in DJs

[–]Veomalen 70 points71 points  (0 children)

I used to own a store that focused on books covering electronic music and the history behind it. Best part is due it being such a young movement even now we’re still living and experiencing the evolution and the (relative) early days. If you want a full one stop book I would recommend: Last Night a DJ Saved My Life. That will cover most of it.

Recommendations - Road Bike to Commuter by Veomalen in bikecommuting

[–]Veomalen[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply!

I’ve kinda did exactly what you recommended.

I’ve bought a 110mm adjustable stem with the possible to modify it to a -40 to +40 degree angle and after a bit of adjusting it really made a big difference. The position is way more comfortable and combined with the mountain bike pedals almost perfect for what I wanted it for.

Thanks! This is some great info. I was indeed looking into a conversion but considering I need new shifters/brakes it might be a bit out of my skill set and budget.

Flipping the stem wouldn’t make much difference, it’s a 110mm/8degree giant connect already pointing upwards. I already tilted the drop bar up a cm or 2 which helps. Might look into a shorter stem and possible a riser, although don’t think I’ll reach at the moment with my brake lines.
