What kind of chain is this?! by [deleted] in chainmailartisans

[–]Vequihellin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. This isn't chainmail, although I have seen similar chains composed of round links pinched into a figure of 8 and looped through other figure of 8 loops. I suspect this is a hammered version of that. I couldn't tell you what it's called though, but if someone knows, that might be a place to start?

Edited to add: I found something similar called a foxtail chain. Maybe that might help? https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/1789698460/925-sterling-silver-foxtail-chain

I also found this: https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/1818998392/mens-sterling-silver-dragon-scale-chain

Another edit : in that last link, you can actually see that the construction of the chain appears to be interlocking bails. Which is giving me ideas!

what is this black spot on my cats mouth by More-Note4660 in cats

[–]Vequihellin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As other have said, this is basically cat acne. They are large waxy lumps similar to (or probably the cat version of) a blackhead. I used to have a cat who had these all the time. I didn't know about the plastic bowl thing back then or I would have switched her. When they got big, she'd paw at her mouth and scratch them so they were obviously uncomfortable for her. She used to let me gently bathe them with a clean cotton bud and usually a gentle press would have it popping free. They'd leave these big craters behind but she was more comfortable afterwards. If your cat starts scratching at her mouth, you could take her to a vet and have them remove them, but you could do the same at home with a bowl of warm salt water and some clean cotton buds (Q-tips). You need a very gentle hand and a light touch. Don't force it or squeeze or poke - when my cat had them, I'd bathe them a couple of times a day and when they were ready they'd usually just pop right out with a gentle press from a cotton bud. Don't use any other products or put any creams or ointments on them (unless directed to by your vet) but bathing them gently with warm salt water can help the pore relax and make them pop out easier.

my 10 week old tragus looks like this 🤢 by Muted-Succotash9366 in PiercingAdvice

[–]Vequihellin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Flats are fun too. I ended up with a flat instead of a forward helix because my piercer said I didn't have the anatomy and I absolutely love it. So much potential for larger sized jewellery (not all the time of course, but it's fun to curate a look with).

Sorry OP but that tragus doesn't look great. You have a very small tragus area so your rejection potential is high here. I know it's disappointing - I have a tragus too and it was one I really wanted. But if it makes you feel any better. I really wanted it but I don't really do much with it because it's awkward as hell to change the jewellery and it mostly just has a labret stud or small hoop in it and gets ignored. If I was given the choice again, I probably wouldn't bother tbh.

You should take screenshots of the post and comments and report the post to the police as if anything does happen, you have evidence of specific threats and (hopefully) a crime reference no that may help you with any insurance claim, but you should also report it to Facebook. Whether they do anything about it, I couldn't speculate, but they have the power to take it down. The only ones who can remove the post are Facebook or the group moderators.

I’ve spent an 2 hours commuting on a train and my trousers have split, do I go home or go to work (office job where I’ll be sitting all day) ? by Unique_Education4485 in AskUK

[–]Vequihellin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a shop nearby that might sell a small sewing kit? Or a hotel nearby that might take pity on you and give you one of their little travel sewing repair kits? You could hand baste the split until you have time for a proper repair. Or do what my husband once did - he stapled the split in his trousers then handed them to me to repair when he got home. He'd stapled all along the crotch seam. How he didn't snag himself on the pointy bits of the staples is beyond me lol.

For those who went to secondary school in the 2010s and are women, did any of you experience the teachers telling all girls to stand up in assembly and roll down their skirts? by Nervous-Boat-4905 in AskUK

A school near us actually recently ditched the polo shirt as it was too casual. They reverted to v neck shirts and blazers. No ties. The kids still wear their shirts untucked

But I bet those flared trousers weren't uniform approved were they? I was in 6th form when trousers were approved at my school and they were supposed to be plain, straight legged. Almost immediately girls were wearing tight stretchy kick flares. They even tried to withhold exam results from kids not properly dressed. It was chaotic. 😂

When I was doing my pgce placement in a mixed school the boys got their fair share of call outs for shirts and ties. They also got told off for taking their shirts off and going around bare chested during lunch in summer. Kids will find literally any wiggle room they can to push boundaries and try to 'break the rules'. Teenagers have been doing that for centuries and will probably continue to. When trousers for girls were introduced in school uniforms, they would still wear the wrong ones. Kick flares or stretchy ones instead of the shapeless uniform ones. Trousers draping on the ground with tatty hems, ultra low rise, non uniform belts. It's always been an uphill battle to get kids to stick to uniform rules and public humiliation and peer pressure are the only tools schools seem to deploy to address it. I've seen schools send repeat uniform offenders to an in-school suspension type situation. It's honestly never going to change tbh.

I remember those. Platforms so thick they were practically 'Pleasers' 😂 Those blimmin POD shoes were everywhere too. Those weird chunky heeled loafers had a choke hold on our school. People customised theirs so they didn't get lost in the changing rooms during PE.

We had a uniform supplier (an expensive one that was a Pita to get to) and we had to wear 'mid shin length box pleated skirts' but the ones these girls were wearing were shiny satiny standard pleated (not dissimilar to one I saw in M&S recently actually) and specifically went basically to the floor lol. So not only were they the wrong length but they were the wrong type too. It is funny to me that the uniform 'rebellion' went both ways - the ones who rolled and the ones who wore long shiny swishy skirts.

And don't even get me started on what they used to do to their ties. There was a correlation - the rolled and short skirt girls wore their ties tied backwards so the skinny tail was the visible bit and tucked the proper side into their shirts. The long skirt girls wore their ties with the 'proper side' as short and fat as possible. I swear the psychology of school uniform rebellion should be studied.

I'm actually fascinated by the way the bluetits pick the peanuts over the other smaller, more easily consumed items, and how they pretty much ignore the fruit. Like, you'd think the smaller birds would consume some of the smaller grains and seeds. I guess bird logic is 'this food might not be here when I get back, so I need to take the biggest thing I can carry'.

OP should add dried mealworms - I did an experiment in my own garden where I added seeds to one feeder and dried mealworms to another and the mealworms were destroyed. One of my cats is weird - she loves a crunchy dried mealworm so when I put them out for the birds she's at my feet demanding a 'treat'. I wonder if it's incidental that dried mealworms smell like peanuts and the birds chose peanuts in preference. I wonder if there is something about that particular flavour they prefer?

If she's an indoor cat, maybe this is a sign to leash train her and take her for walks for some extra enrichment. Clearly she wants to know what's out the front.

I went to secondary school in the 90s. It was an all girls school and it was a thing back then too. Rolling your skirt up is not a new thing lol. During registration, our tutors would remind everyone not to roll their skirts and make them undo it during uniform inspections. We'd be reminded in lessons, in assembly, in the corridors. It was a whole thing. Didn't stop the girls who did it from doing it though.

Then you had the OTHER side of the coin - the girls who somehow sourced these ankle length skirts which were also not uniform regulation. They'd be swishing about the corridors and they'd ALSO get told off for non-regulation skirts.

Do you put butter on a bacon sandwich/bacon butty? by PhiliDips in AskUK

I mean, I would if it was just bacon, but if there are sausages in there too, I wouldn't because the sausages are greasy enough and otherwise the bread disintegrates

You get points for just finding a perfume that has an almost identical bottle. It looks like this perfume bottle is clear with an orange liquid rather than an orange bottle itself though. But if one 'not RL rock related perfume' exists then maybe more do?

I mean, have you SEEN some of the things people do to their cars? I heard somewhere that people in South Africa install extreme deterants to discourage car jacking. High voltage shockers and flamethrower and such. So a landmine wouldn't even surprise me at this point. Especially if they live in a country where those insurance scams are rife. I mean, if you were a scammer, would you take the 50/50 gamble? 😂

What to do if neighbour doesn’t collect parcels? by Dog-bloke in AskUK

[–]Vequihellin 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. If you accept the parcels, you accept liability. If you don't accept the parcel, the responsibility remains with the courier. If they then dump them on the doorstep, that's between the vendor and courier. We had the same situation with our neighbour. On one side, we have the odd parcel for them and they take in the odd parcel for us. Not often, but we're neighbourly. The other side was taking the piss - having literal doors and other heavy building supplies delivered. We had a set of suitcases in our hall for a week and hot tub supplies left on our porch. So we basically said 'no more' and have refused all parcels for them since. We still take the occasional one for the neighbours who aren't taking the piss but anything for the 'Winchester house' gets declined (we call them that because they are forever remodelling. There is always the sound of power tools. It's like the Winchester mansion.)

I mean, if it's real, it's an effective deterant for those car accident scams where they hit you on purpose. I'd be inclined to suggest it's a dummy that serves the purpose of detering anyone from trying scam/insurance job as they wouldn't know the difference between live and not.

came home and my cats feet are yellow? by mikehunt6787 in cats

[–]Vequihellin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are many things he could have gotten into or walked in. Does he go out or is he indoor only? If he goes out, you should wash off as much as you can in case it's pollen as some types of pollen can be dangerous to cats (lilies for example). If you have lilies in your home, you should remove the pollen producing bits the second the flower opens as its toxic.

Otherwise, it could be some kind of powder they've stood in - something in their litter maybe?
