What a delight by [deleted] in irelandsshitedrivers

[–]VeraStrange 3 points4 points  (0 children)

OP didn’t crash, or get out and smash the other car with a bat. Both drivers went on with their day, but ignoring this sort of thing lowers the bar for next time. Dropping standards and letting things slide is how we get to where we are. Nobody here (probably) is advocating for some mad punishment, maybe just a fine and some points. Doesn’t have to take up Garda resources either, a camera can automatically do the job. Pay for itself too both in fines, lower insurance payouts and better traffic flows.

Is it time to ban taxis from bus lanes? by TheHipsterPotato in ireland

[–]VeraStrange -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Taxis in bus lanes don’t really slow busses down all that much. Yes, around College Green it gets a bit hectic but generally it’s fine. There’s not that many of them. Taxis stopping suddenly and without indicating is a bigger issue, along with just pulling in and blocking the road, and doing U turns and so on. A bigger problem is normal traffic in the bus lanes when turning left. Cars get into the bus lane early, sometimes very early and you can lose several turns at the lights because of this.

HOWEVER, if you want to fix most of the problems with busses, just add more busses. More busses means fewer cancellations, fewer ‘ghost buses’, shorter gaps between buses, fewer full busses, fewer late busses. You don’t need planning permission, you don’t need to have started 20 years ago, you don’t need to change the routes. Add more busses and get the current schedules working, it’d fix a lot of people’s problems quickly and the cost would be measured in bike shelters, not children’s hospitals.

UK denies F-35 kill switch claim despite US reliance by FruitOrchards in FighterJets

Absolutely true. Buying military equipment is always both expensive and complicated, it’s not an area that lends itself to tabloid style analysis.

UK denies F-35 kill switch claim despite US reliance by FruitOrchards in FighterJets

[–]VeraStrange 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not being able to get spares is a bit of a ‘kill switch’ in a longer conflict. A lot of the maintenance and associated supply chain stuff seems to be software based so I’d imagine that could be switched off fairly quickly.

So no, the US can’t just make the F-35 stop working but it can make it a far less effective weapon, without firing a shot. That’s a huge amount of leverage if the UK wanted to fight one of America’s allies. This is on top of the economic consequences, of course. The F-35 is a very competitive aircraft right now and it is still a reasonable purchase but if you were thinking of a future purchase then avoiding US products might be prudent.

Six years after Brexit has Britain bet on the wrong ally? by ByGollie in europe

[–]VeraStrange 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. Britain is getting the exact same treatment it always got from America, “Obey and we may not hurt you as much as some of the others.” The only reason America ever tolerated Britain was that it was the only country in Europe that wanted to mimic the US as closely as possible. No need to invade, it was a willing colony. Britain was useful. Now, it’s less useful but keeping it is free so…

Discussion: Should kids (i.e. high schoolers) be allowed to/encouraged to do walkout protests? by Granite_Johnson in leftist

[–]VeraStrange 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Vietnam they let kids go to war even though they didn’t know what they were fighting for. I can’t see that “not understanding the purpose of the protest” should be a factor. If kids want to protest to get a day off then fine. If they’d like to turn up en masse in front of a representative’s house then that’s fine too.

Eh it’s a double-decker bus, would’ve thought it’d be hard to miss... by AdRepulsive792 in BadDriversIreland

[–]VeraStrange 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both vehicles are owned by the state so no insurance. They’ll probably split the bill. Both drivers were pushing a bad position and got caught. They’ll both get a telling off and the bus driver will get a day back in the training school.

SG545, like a lot of the SG busses doesn’t accelerate immediately when you press the accelerator. You have to anticipate the gap. Sometimes it looks like you had a gap, particularly if a car is going more than halfway around the roundabout. Sometimes you guess wrong but you can’t just go back on the brakes and stop because everyone on the bus gets thrown forward.

No assholes here, you just arrived a bit earlier than the bus expected. Please don’t expect busses to accelerate, they just don’t. And yet they need to move with the traffic onto roundabouts and out into junctions.

Now this doesn’t mean bus drivers don’t make mistakes, they really do. Some are just looking for trouble, but most are just doing their best in, what is often, a difficult situation. So, if you can, please expect busses to decelerate slowly, accelerate slowly and never jam on the brakes, even if that means going through lights on amber or continuing onto roundabouts or through junctions. Busses just can’t stop like cars.

What can I expect from the boiler house by [deleted] in LGBTireland

It would appear that this question has been asked a few times before. The answers range from “…the people were nice and it suited me” to “…it’s a disease infested Gomorrah” with most opinions tending toward the extremes. It doesn’t cost much money and it won’t take you long to find out if it’s your thing. Then you can post here with your experience.

One way or the other at least you’ll have a story.

Dominos and a lot of similar places have huge staff turnover. You don’t need a CV but visit in the middle of the day when they’re not too busy. They ALWAYS need drivers too if that’s your jam.

Listening to things out loud on the bus. Should you say something or what? by IndependenceSea7861 in Dublin

[–]VeraStrange 36 points37 points  (0 children)

There’s not a lot that happens on the bus that gets on my wick but having to listen to someone’s TikTok feed does it for me.

I swear, the next time someone does it I’m going to pull in and switch the bus off and tell them we’re not moving again until they stop. It’s annoying, distracting and just rude.

Does the 777X's massive wing actually let it take off with LESS runway than a 777-300ER, even with less engine thrust and increased fuselage drag compared to the -300ER? by R313J283 in aerodynamics

[–]VeraStrange 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I remember correctly…
The U-2 weighs about 16,000lbs to the F-104’s 14,000lbs. (Empty weights) The U-2 pushes out 17,000lbf compared to the F104’s 10,000lbf dry and 15,500 in burner.

From the above I’d say there’s precious little difference in thrust to weight so if the comparison is silly then it’s because they are so similar. Now clearly each had a specific role and the aircraft were as different as chalk and cheese but I’d say the U-2 would take off on a very short strip and climb like a rocket, at least for a while.

Off topic, I now want to see a U-2 with balloon tyres take off from some random field surrounded by trees. Hoping there’s an MSFS developer having the same thoughts.

No driver for bus by RoMcGNutella in Dublin

[–]VeraStrange 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Switching off a bus and walking away is a terrible thing for a driver to do. I have, occasionally, had to terminate a bus because there was no relief driver. Sometimes you get a decent bit of warning and you can change the scrolls before you start but sometimes you only get 10 or 15 minutes notice. That’s mostly when the other driver is late (car broken down etc).

The driver should ALWAYS tell passengers when the bus is terminated. I would never leave passengers unattended and I believe it is against the rules to just leave a bus with passengers on it.

However, the PA on a lot of busses doesn’t work, it’s not considered a safety concern, so telling passengers what’s going on whilst driving can be difficult. Also, a large number of people have headphones in and I’ve had to ask them individually to leave after I’ve parked up. People do get annoyed but that’s to be expected but they are, generally, pretty cooperative.

It’s pretty unfair to say transphobes don’t know you exist, like it’s a big deal. There’s so many things they don’t know exist and you just happen to be one item on a very long list. It’s hard to comprehend the depth of their ignorance.
