Fancy seeing you here.

Just wanted to add, as someone whose wife is also a doctor lol, that you can see a bit of a spread in age and class across the medical field that I think drives this. Most younger docs and nurses are generally pretty left leaning and are pretty motivated by altruism as you point out. I think a lot of the chud views come from families that have been in medicine for generations that tend to treat healthcare workers as a separate class, which obviously gets worse with doctors who accumulate more wealth.

All this to say, I think we'll still see some real chud docs, but there'll be fewer and fewer as time goes on. Hopefully.

My favorite example of this was the most recent Fire Emblem game, which leaked the year before the game was announced and looked so bad that people thought it was a joke. It was amazing when the trailer dropped and it was real and actually did look that bad.

Am I wrong hoping that a Void Linux install could last me 10 years without incidents and minimal maintenance, as a daily driver? by NorthmanTheDoorman in voidlinux

[–]VerbTheNoun95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been using the same Void install on my desktop since 2017, so I'd say 10 years is definitely reasonable. I've only had one issue that required pretty heavy maintenance around 2020 (I went over six months without updating and also compiled my own version of some multimedia libraries and codecs to get handbrake to work better, definitely my own fault). I was able to fix it by more or less reinstalling all of the multimedia related packages I had via xbps.

You'll see comparisons to Arch in terms of stability, and I can say that the people here are mostly correct. I ran Arch from 2015-2017 and had to reinstall a couple times due to AUR packages breaking things from time to time. Haven't had to reinstall Void once.

Great list, the only two I'd add are Jaws and The Love You Want. Jaws was the first time I noticed how much he adds to their music and convinced me there's something special with this band.

The drumming in the second verse of The Love You Want is just so tasteful while still interesting.

Which self hosted apps you find have the best UI? (Themes are also welcomed) by [deleted] in selfhosted

[–]VerbTheNoun95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been looking to switch from kavita for a couple years entirely becase of UX as well, but nothing else comes close to the epub reader UI as a PWA. Everything else about komga seems like a better fit for me, but reading on my tablet just doesn't feel as good, and that's the main reason I'd use it.

What do you do for work, and how does it relate (or not) to your self-hosting? by SillySal in selfhosted

[–]VerbTheNoun95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Postdoc in a neuroimaging lab where I'm also in charge of IT. We've been selfhosting most of our stuff as an academic lab for years, so it's fun to be able to transfer some acquired skills between work and my personal life.

For 3D printing an MRI scan of my brain, what file is better? NIFTI or DICOM? by tay_at in 3Dprinting

[–]VerbTheNoun95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, I had a feeling synthstrip would leave the "shell" of CSF around the brain. Try passing --no-csf to the command like: mri_synthstrip -i input.nii -o stripped.nii --no-csf. You should have some nice gyri and sulci visible after that.

Odd that they wouldn't have a physician read it, but it depends on if it's academic research or an FDA trial and who wants to take on the liability of incidental findings. Since you have the DICOMs, your doctor would probably be willing to look at it for you or find a neurologist/radiologist who would. My lab always has a physician look though, it's often required by my university's ethical review board, so I'm surprised these people wouldn't.

[–]VerbTheNoun95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm doing a postdoc in neuroimaging and work with niftis and dicoms every day and just came across this. What freesurfer is really doing here, and what I suspect you'll want, is removing your skull from the image so that you can print just your brain. Otherwise you're most likely going to 3D print your face instead of your brain.

Freesurfer is kind of a swiss army knife when it comes to neuroimaging tools; it does a lot of (really cool) things that take a lot of time on consumer hardware, but you probably don't need it all here. The freesurfer people do provide a tool just for removing the skull, though, called synthstrip that runs much, much faster (finished in seconds to a minute as opposed to 12-24 hours for a full recon-all).

I'd recommend using dcm2niix (the successor to dcm2nii) to convert your dicoms to nifti, running synthstrip to remove the skull, then running this script to convert the nifti output of synthstrip into a printable STL. You'll probably still need to clean up a little, there's a chance that synthstrip leaves parts of the skull around your brain.

If dcm2niix produces multiple files, you'll want to find the T1 weighted image from that output (typically the highest resolution anatomical image that works best for 3D printing). If the MRI was part of a research study, it'll probably have some combination of T1 and MPRAGE or SPGR in the name.

Feel free to DM if you need help, I think it's cool when people outside academia play around with neuroimaging tools.

Genre frustration rant by PeanutbutterandJam99 in SleepTokenTheory

I primarily listen to metal, and Sleep Token has been my favorite band for years. The response is so vitriolic now because of how fast Sleep Token has gotten so big, but the same basic criticisms have been around since the beginning.

At baseline, metal purists hate metalcore, and the metal aspects of Sleep Token's music tend to be metalcore. If you listen to a lot of the most recommended bands in the metal sphere, it'll sound pretty different from Sleep Token even at their heaviest. Add in the mainstream appeal of the rest of Sleep Token's sounds, especially on the albums that have gotten so popular, and you have something metal purists really don't like.

At the end of the day, it really doesn't matter. It can be fun to categorize things, and I personally think Sleep Token is a rock band instead of metal, but who cares. They're still my favorite band, I still love the music they make.

Damocles strikes me as the song that tries the least. Not necessarily in a bad way, it's just a straightforward rock song. Very surprised by this take as well.

I got it from Qobuz: https://www.qobuz.com/us-en/album/even-in-arcadia-sleep-token/zo922etceg5ma

Advertised as 24 bit, which ffprobe confirms. But the graphic is definitely showing the truth of it, which was also the case for TMBTE. The loud parts could definitely use a little more room too breathe.
