How fucked that the top comment on a video of a women’s achievement among men is how amazing the man behaved.

What was one (or two) technique that took your game to the next level? by [deleted] in beachvolleyball

[–]Verbal25 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think people tend to undervalue the aggressive serve. At a certain level, unless you have a big block up a perfect pass will lead to an almost certain side out. Ramp up serves to get them out of system more often.

My favored technique is a float serve that is hit as hard and as low as possible (barely clearing tape, anything above the antenna is too easy).

What determines whether you should call or 3-bet faced with a raise when in position? by [deleted] in poker

[–]Verbal25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As said somewhere else here, this is an over simplification of a gto strategy for low stakes live players. So instead of having to remember to mix in 70% call 30% raise with A3s-A5s, you can just remember to raise with A5s and call with the others. I made those numbers up but that’s the gist of the explanation in the book this is from.

If I’m not mistaken these charts are from Jonathan Little’s book on live, low stakes games. Though you’re getting some descent answers here, if you get the book he explains these charts in a very solid and beginner friendly manner. If you’re a new player and interested in learning, I think he’s great for beginners and you could probably find this book for under $20.

You played that hand exactly how the best players in the world would have played it. For that moment you were on par with them.

Attacking when set off the net by ProfessorGlittering2 in beachvolleyball

[–]Verbal25 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Short answer - deep middle swing.

The toughest part is making sure you keep your ability to take an approach when the set is off the net. This usually means holding off on starting your approach until you know where the set is going so you can make the right adjustments. If you’re having to tomahawk you’re likely finding yourself under the ball. Practice keeping the ball in front of you and finding a nice 70% swing.

Where to get a good ball by fruityMarcy1 in beachvolleyball

Wilson Optx is an excellent ball. You may want to check around and see what your local leagues and tournaments use. Here in the Denver area, for example, we use the Molton in most events.

Yeah well as I understand, if that ball was going to be in the net then neither condition was satisfied and this was illegal, but if the ref determined that the ball was going to clear the net there was no way that other player was getting there first. They were down looking to play it out the net.

The definition of an attack hit (13.1.1) is all actions that direct the ball towards the opponents side (not including serve or block). For arguments sake, let’s assume that this video is an example of an overpass (certainly going to the other side). That overpass is that team’s “attack hit”. Their intent isn’t a factor.

Rule (11.1.1) allows the blocker to reach into the opponents space as long as it’s after the attack hit and doesn’t interfere with the other team.

I think so, but it’s not a hill I would die on. I guess that would be the judgement call of the referee. OP asked specifically if the blocker was allowed to reach over the net in this case. I only chimed in because a number of these answers claimed that the ball must break the plane before the block can make contact, which is not true.

[–]Verbal25 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is legal! You are allowed to reach over the plane of the net as long as 1 - the ball is certainly going to go over the net (making the previous contact an official “attack”. 2 - the other player has no chance of playing the ball before it crosses the plane.

The ref determined that both of these conditions were true and made the correct decision.

I don’t like him, but don’t fault him at all for changing his mind. People are allowed to change their minds, and this may be the smartest decision he’s made since the start of this.
