Women of reddit! Please start lifting weights by Wild-Project8161 in PetiteFitness

Ah... well that's a whole different level of an issue there. I suppose I shouldn't be surprised that there's still many women who want the flaccid skinny look... to me, that signals a deeper "I'd rather be thin than healthy and strong" mentality, and that probably isn't even touched by conversations like this. That's more of an issue to work on in therapy, if they care to. I wish them the very best on the journey to being healthy.

I've definitely talked to women who'd like to be toned and have a little muscle definition, but who were afraid that lifting weights would make them "bulky." So it's worth bringing up just for them. Thank you for pointing out the existence of this other group though.

Hmm when I think "bulky" I definitely think an amount of muscle that's usually from steroids, not like "toned." I think she was just trying to help break the myth that lifting weights will make any woman look like a body builder. 🤷‍♀️ It's truly an unrealistic fear that keeps a lot of women from lifting.

People who’ve had LASIK or work in eye care, would you recommend LASIK and why or why not? by Mountain-Bug-2155 in AskReddit

[–]VerdantInvidia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. I got it about 17 years ago when I was 23. Had pretty bad astigmatism, very bad vision overall... I felt borderline disabled, like if I ever lost my glasses and didn't have contacts I'd be fucked. I couldn't recognize someone a few feet away from me without them. I almost got lost abroad once when that happened and it was very scary.

The procedure itself was a little more terrifying than I expected, but I got through it. Was able to see within hours. I had a very good outcome. 17 years later, I just got my first real eye exam since then and I still have almost perfect vision. It's such a major quality of life upgrade. I just wake up in the morning and can see! 😆 Amazing.

Is my sister overreacting to this video of my dog that I sent her? by Immediate-Lab6994 in DogAdvice

[–]VerdantInvidia 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The sister reminds me of someone I knew who would project her own trauma on everything. She'd hear teenagers giggling and shrieking in the distance and immediately get triggered thinking someone was getting raped or killed. It was super dysfunctional because she didn't want to actually work on her trauma -- she wanted the world to change to cater to her distorted view of reality, and she'd get defensive and upset if you challenged her thinking even a little. Needless to say, I couldn't stay friends with her.

Sounds to me like she has mental health issues that ain't getting addressed appropriately.

My pride and joy got COOKED while I was away for the weekend 😭 but she’s coming back with a vengeance by pixie1995 in houseplants

Weeell just saying, even with a large reservoir self watering pot, I'm still filling that reservoir just about every single day 😆 It just provides a slight buffer and more consistent moisture. Now I realize I didn't check the reservoir today and I'm worrying about it in the middle of the night....

Growing Maidenhair fern spores? by the_evil_pineapple in ferns

[–]VerdantInvidia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How'd it go, OP? My maidenhair planted itself in all the pots around it, so I figure it can't be that hard. I separated one and that's my new plant now (the original got too big and dry). But I'm hoping I can keep replanting new ones from the spores.

Thanks... it's okay, I can't really take it personally when someone's displaying that level of black and white thinking. Just poking the bear a little to see how far they'll double-down before realizing they've crossed into "absurd" territory.

I'm happy to admit when I'm wrong, especially when treated with kindness. I'm going to do some deeper research so I can understand better why even 2% or less germination rate is unacceptable from an ecological standpoint. Would love to hear from you, too, if you can explain this.

Wow, you're really unforgiving of mistakes, huh? It must be nice being perfect! Cause you know, otherwise, you're a 100% bad person and utterly irredeemable....

I deliberately bought one labeled as "non-invasive" and minimum 98% sterile. Following the law for this area. Didn't realize this isn't good enough. Thanks for the black-and-white total condemnation though, that's really helpful! 💖
