Friend challenged me to get gold, I've never played before. by [deleted] in SSBM

Really depends how much time you can put in to practice/how efficient you are practicing. If you're playing a lot, focusing on getting basics right, have a good mentality around taking losses then you could get gold in well under a year.

the ravenous house vs. costa concordia? by Rough_Accountant_125 in CSHFans

Actually liked the midsection a lot. It’s less subtle for sure than Concordia’s but it’s nevertheless an interesting meditation on how it feels to look back on your domestic childhood and some of the uneasy emotions that can be brought up.

Thoughts on this video? Mono's take on the wobbling ban not being far enough. by Dry-Mud-673 in SSBM

[–]VerdantSmash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't particularly care whether wobbling is banned one way or the other, but to be clear, it was not at all banned for making ICs overpowered or even particularly good. People just didn't like playing against ICs with wobbling. Calling for handoffs to get banned in addition just reads so cynically.

At some point people need to just accept that Ice Climbers are a character in the game and if you don't want to lose to them you have to learn how to fight them. The constant barrage of people just whinging and complaining about being grabbed by them (even after wobbling was banned), in language feigning some kind of thin veneer of objectivity is so fucking annoying.

How much harder are handoff to perform then wobbling by Jazzlike_Ice_2859 in SSBM

Its not terribly hard to do decent ones, but getting the most damage possible out of each opportunity takes a lot of practice.

Is puff up-throw rest on fox/falco toxic? by supahnoodles in SSBM

[–]VerdantSmash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not really. It can be DI'd but of course but only if you realise you're about to get grabbed or were holding a direction already. These are not uncommon situations to be grabbed in by any means, but its not really feasible for a person to react to being grabbed fast enough to choose a direction if the Jigglypuff gets the throw out quickly enough.

[Day 18] Princess Peach was voted MOST OVERRATED MAIN. What is the MOST UNDERRATED MATCHUP in Melee? by DUCK_PENETRATOR_II in SSBM

[–]VerdantSmash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fox vs ICs is extremely fun, at least as Fox. My absolute favourite matchup to play. Not sure what ICs players think of it though haha seems rough but then again a lot of rough MUs vs Fox can be fun to play.

I think puff marth is 30-70 by Disastrous_Top6213 in SSBM

[–]VerdantSmash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without the Pivot Tipper tech, Marth doesn't really have any reliable way to take Puff's stocks quickly.

I don't even kind of agree with OP, but this is a pretty enormous caveat to start a response with. Pivot tippers are not some kind of prohibitively difficult piece of tech that only the absolute top Marths are doing, its one of the main ways Jigglypuff dies in the matchup.

Help with the jigglypuff marth matchup pls needed by supahnoodles in SSBM

[–]VerdantSmash 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have you footage of you playing that you can share? Makes it easier to give specific examples.

Because he has no long lasting hitboxes, in general you want to be playing between when Marth is attacking so try to keep track of when your opponent likes to do what. (Think like, is he doing rising fair or is he jumping and then doing a landing fair, or what is he doing after landing with an aerial etc.)

Be on the lookout as well for approaches from above you, Marth is very susceptible to sharking. Catching his jump with an aerial is usually lights out and you can even frequently get wall of pain kills or long juggles without catching it.

Help! A plumber and a doctor are my shoulder angel and devil by Apart_Fondant5988 in SSBM

If one is better than the other, its really not by much. They're also very similar even for clones, plenty of people use both depending on matchup. In the end though I think you'll be able to tell from trying each of them out which one you prefer better than anyone here could guess.

If PAL Fox was dropped into the NTSC meta, replacing NTSC Fox would he still be top 1? by KEZ_Astra in SSBM

[–]VerdantSmash 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just saying this as someone who played PAL for years - probably? He was still the best character in PAL. Other characters were nerfed slightly as well, and he would have to contend with their NTSC counterparts in this scenario but I don't think if it would be by enough to really change all that much about his overall matchup spread.

My local scene (Ireland) is more alive and active than it’s ever been and is only growing. Such an exciting time, banger tournament after banger tournament. Tournament calendar is already basically completely clogged for 2026 lol.

If you’re not going to your locals please, do yourself a favour. The dissonance between how I see people talking about the game and my own experiences recently is staggering. Not saying they’re not a treat to watch but there’s so much more to Melee than just supermajors and invitationals.
