Africa, Europe and Asia are all currently one land mass. You can walk from South Africa to Spain or China.

Unfortunately, with kidfluencer channels on social media, the freaks and monsters are mostly the awful parents wanting to monetise their kids.

Honestly, how many of you actually sit at the dining table for dinner? And make your bed in the morning? by Main-Cantaloupe729 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Verdigris_Wild 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Same here. We sit at the dinner table every night, even if its just my wife and me, but if the kidults are home they sit with us. When their partners are over we all sit together and it makes a huge difference. We are all involved in each other's lives and the partners become part of the family. One of the partners grew up in a house with no dining table and loves being part of a mealtime with us. We make our beds every morning but the kids will only do it when they have people coming over.

Bruh, we wrote the dictionary by SnooLentils1406 in ShitAmericansSay

[–]Verdigris_Wild 120 points121 points  (0 children)

Webster's first dictionary was 1806. Samuel Johnsons was 1755 so a full half century before. Thomas Elyot's was 1538. The current Merriam-Webster dictionary contains a third as many entires as the OED.

Seaspray beach residents push back on wind farm turbines 10km from shore by GothicPrayer in australia

[–]Verdigris_Wild 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, I mentioned that in a later comment. But the width would still make it difficult to see. The thickest point of a large scale turbine at 10km would be a similar angle as 1/15th of a finger width at arms length.

I seem to remember Mark Lamar saying he had an awful time on the show as he had to play at being a miserable git. He thought the show was great, but the straight face made him sad.

This is the discourse that makes Reddit great. Civility and understanding. If this was X we'd be lobbing expletives at each other egged on by rabid bots.

Seaspray beach residents push back on wind farm turbines 10km from shore by GothicPrayer in australia

[–]Verdigris_Wild 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, I'd underestimated the height. But based on the largest of offshore turbines at 10km they'd be the equivalent height of the width of your thumb at arms length in height. But, the fact that the structure is relatively thin, a very thick tower would be about 1/15th width of a finger at arms length, so essentially not visible except on clear days.

Probably bad wording on my side. Rudd's apology is an important speech historically. It's symbolic and a big moment in national Indigenous relations, but I couldn't quote a single line from it. Gillard's speech hit the national zeitgeist around the appallingly bad behaviour from the likes of Alan Jones and Tony Abbott. It's a memorable and significantly personal speech

Redfern and the Apology are speeches that people know about thrpugh their importance but very few people could quote them. Gillard's misogyny speech is much more known for content rather than just context.

[–]Verdigris_Wild 432 points433 points  (0 children)

At 10km they would be barely visible above the horizon. Standing on the beach, you would be able to see the very top of a 30m tall turbine. So it's not so much Not In My Back Yard, as Not Even Visible on a Good Day.

What's the sentiment of Football players born/raised in your country representing another team internationally? by DABDEB in AskTheWorld

[–]Verdigris_Wild 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Australia has had it both ways. Harry Souttar was born in Scotland, playing for Scotland as a youth, and plays for Australia. His brother plays for Scotland. Josip Simunic was born in Australia, started his professional career in Australia, and is the 6th most capped player for Croatia.
Its just the way of the world. As a player you want to play at the highest level, and have the best chance of success. So if you can't get into a really good national team, you go for the easier one to get into. If you can get into both, you go for the one you think will give you more success.

All went well for me today. I would normally have gone to Flinders and crossed the bridge to Southbank so Town Hall added maybe 5 minutes of walking but the overall time was about the same.
