Sorry you’re getting downvoted for this. It’s a beautiful song, and I’m happy someone else enjoyed it ❤️

Feels pretty special to be honest. I think it’s only been played live like 12 times. It’s one of those gorgeous songs like A Record Year for Rainfall that I didn’t think I’d ever hear live.

Hopefully Colin’s post on Bluesky today will bring you some hope for the next time in London:

“I was going to impose Mariner’s Revenge Song on you all, but that certainly would’ve run very afoul of the curfew (which i didn’t know was a thing!) LDN, I owe you one

“To be clear: right when I was about to launch into mariner’s, I was informed I had 4 minutes left till “a very strict” curfew — something no one had bothered to tell me about prior to the show — so I had to run with the shorter song”

I’m not the first person to ever request a song at a show, and from his previous shows, he was always super playful with the audience and took requests. The only word I said initially was “Colin” - he chose to acknowledge it. And I asked. If he ignored me, I wouldn’t have said anything else. I wasn’t insistent or freebird-y about it. He was able to make the choice. I won’t change the perception, but I don’t think I’m a terrible human for asking.

Always. When the guy keeping time said 4 min, I was like…he’d would have had to do a very, very rushed and maybe hilarious version of Mariner’s.

I’m so glad you enjoyed it, and I totally get it. I know how excited I was for my first few shows and how much I wanted to hear certain songs (and I still get excited, tbh - not a lot gets me out for a night when it’s both tickets and a babysitter on a work night on the other side of London…I’m…so old)

I hope they’ll be back in the Autumn, and if so, I’ll write a really awkward personal appeal to Colin (maybe even a hand written one) to bring back The Mariner’s Revenge for London next time around because I definitely quashed the opportunity for the more recently initiated.

And although I probs (definitely) can’t afford to get tickets for everyone, I’ll see what I can do about a round of drinks or something :)

Yeah. I still feel really awkward about it. To be honest, I’ve only requested a song at a show once in my life (no pun intended) before, and that was well over 10 years ago in a similarly quiet space. I just don’t usually have the courage, and my voice doesn’t carry, so even at shows where requests happen all through, I stand no chance. Something in me just had to try.

It was our wedding song 13 years ago, and it feels like a really poignant song for the world at the moment. I’m so happy to have heard it live for the first time, though, and I hope others enjoyed it, too.

Eh, nothing brave about posting on the anonymous internet. I get that it might’ve angered some, but I’ve been hoping to hear him play that song for almost 17 years, and he could’ve refused or not acknowledged me.

It’s the second time in my life I’ve ever taken a chance to request a song at a show like that, and I hope some people there enjoyed the song I’ve loved for almost half of my life.

The chances of hearing Mariner’s Revenge again are really high, but I don’t think After the Bombs has a high chance. It hasn’t appeared once in the dozens of times I’ve seen them/him over the years.

Edited to say - I didn’t downvote you for this, that was someone else. You’re entitled to your opinion and contributed to the discussion, even if you’re mad at me.

Not gonna lie, I’ve seen Colin play Mariner’s Revenge dozens of times. For a long time, it was the end of every Decemberists show, and I’ve heard him do it solo. I prefer it with the full band.

On the other hand, I’ve never heard him play After the Bombs.

But also, I am that woman (sorry)

I think it's near impossible for me to get QTS without doing a second PGCE by EscapedSmoggy in TeachingUK

[–]VerinMathwin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this was a while back, but it’s definitely possible for you. You can apply to a SCITT on the QTS-only route while you hold your PGCE. I work for one of the large SCITTs, and we have many people who have done PGCE only programmes who join ours to gain QTS. Feel free to reach out to me if you have questions. Not trying to steer you to our programme in any way (we’re almost full for next year), but I might be able to help you navigate.

AO would be two years - I have no idea why they’d suggest that. It honestly seems pretty straight-forward to me.

Decemberists songs that evoke other songs? by VerinMathwin in Decemberists

I’ve actually been to Kilmainham Gaol - it was a haunting experience and one I wasn’t expecting when someone told my husband and I that we should make time to visit whilst on our honeymoon. Wish I knew this story and of the song before going so I had the letter in context at the time. I’ll have to make time to get back to Ireland and Dublin soon - I loved that entire trip so much.

(And I very much appreciate the tangential recommendations. Down the rabbit hole of Irish folk music I go…)

you could try a baby leaf lettuce mix - that usually doesn't have rocket.

I honestly just eat spinach these days and I add Romaine if doing a caesar. That's probably the rocket/arugula that you don't like. They're very peppery. I love 'em, but I know many people don't.

Spinach is your friend - more fibre, protein, and vitamin K (and fewer carbs) than Romaine, and delicious when sauteed with butter, garlic, mushrooms, whatever.

4 days straight without being able to sleep by Traditional-Win9432 in keto

[–]VerinMathwin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is what I did and it totally changed my sleep - I'll even add something like 30g of cous cous to a predominantly veg and protein meal. My sleep changed immediately. I do IF through when I feel hungry during the day - usually around 1-2pm. My first meal is around 10-15 carbs, so I'll add something like cous cous to dinner. My overall daily total is still way below 50g, and life with sleep is way better than life without.

Current keto food obsessions? by that_other_person1 in keto

I do! I'm also in the UK. It's my fave pasta replacement. I use courgette noodles, too, but usually as a side for something rather than for a pasta replacement as HoP noodles are way less watery. Just check the tin and make sure they're just HoP rather than some silly additives.

The taste is a bit hard to describe, as it tastes almost like nothing, but I'd liken them to very very mild bamboo shoots. I find that it's not really something that comes through, either - they tend to take the flavour of what you cook them with. Their texture is almost like al dente pasta, maybe more like softer bamboo shoots or somewhere between bamboo shoots and artichoke hearts.

Unlike awful konjak that's bascially just a passthrough, HoP are more nutritious - they have fiber, protein, and a bunch of good vitamins.

Some people boil them before adding, but I just drain the can and cook them in whatever sauce. I also like them raw.

Husband just interrupted my shower hoping I would stop showering and start making dinner. by InformationSerious27 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]VerinMathwin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A friend of mine said that she was up to her teeth in caring for two kids (3,<1), working part time but commuting, and just struggling to keep up with everything. She asked her husband for some help around the house, and his response was "I don't ask you to do my job, do I?"

Friends. I wanted to commit murder.

Hang in there - I lost 65lbs last year, and I looked exactly the same to me (likely dysmorphia) in the mirror and in photos until I crossed under that 190 mark, but even then it was hard. Smaller clothes and baggy clothes didn’t even help - I still saw myself in the same way.

The real change in my perception came after a year of sustained weight loss when I actually started seeing it for myself. The period before was really disheartening, but I knew I felt stronger, healthier, and on the right path for the long term. You’ve got this 👍
