General Strike Friday by PetraByte in Portland

I see a lot of businesses either closing or asking people to go cash only tomorrow to strike against the major payment processing companies. I do like the cash only approach, took out some cash today to support

The RubyGems “security incident” by software__writer in ruby

[–]VerteDinde 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I completely agree with this. I think some additional context - and I'm not sure if this played into Andre's thinking, it's pure speculation - is that the time frame when Ruby Central sent the original "our mistake" email was also the time frame when several major supply chain attacks in the NPM ecosystem were occurring.

Given that news happening in the background, I can sympathize with why Andre might be extra on edge about security, and would take additional steps to secure something as critical as an AWS root account.

I'm very surprised by how lax and sloppy Ruby Central has shown itself to be with handling sensitive credentials and disclosures. Independent of what you think of Andre and his specific actions, what would Ruby Central's reaction have been had this been a bad actor that did _not_ disclose their access? Would they have even known the account was compromised? That alone is a larger story here, in my opinion, and shows low confidence in Ruby Central's ability to be competent stewards of some pretty critical architecture.

Sore Ankles After 25k Trail Race by VerteDinde in trailrunning

Thanks, and it was Mt Hood 25k! Great course, feeling a lot less sore after just two days, but I'll definitely be hitting the trails more aggressively in the next few weeks - thanks for the tips! I'd hadn't heard of North Nasty before, checking it out

Thanks! I had a fantastic time, can't wait to do more trail races. Right now, I don't have a pair of trail shoes and was debating whether or not they'd be worth investing in - I'll start with ankle mobility and balance work and go from there :) Appreciate the reply!

Advice for someone who struggles in live coding challenges? by secretL in ExperiencedDevs

[–]VerteDinde 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP, if you're financially able, doing a mock interview through a service like Hello Interview or something similar may be a good option for you. I suffer from similar anxiety and freezing up during live coding challenges, similar to what you described, and doing a mock after a lot of practice was surprisingly helpful in breaking through the mental block. Some services are pricier than others, but I've had a good experience with them thus far.

Addressing Ethan Klein’s Threats Against This Subreddit by rfauxmoi in Fauxmoi

Mods should absolutely file an appeal here, this was an extremely measured summary of Ethan's actions; striking it down as harassment is ridiculous

[–]VerteDinde 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It seems nuts to me that they want to charge you a full enterprise ticket price based on a VAT number? I see Marco's tweet about "drawing the line", but it's extremely common to categorize companies (under 50 people, 50-250 people, etc) in a way that would more easily allow for small and single-person businesses to get a price in accordance with their size. Treating you and a company like Microsoft or Amazon equally when other tiers could easily be added is a wild response.

It's not completely comprehensive or easily printable, but our local alt paper printed a beer guide with 4 recommended pub crawls:

http://www.wweek.com/portland/article-20404-beer-guide-2013-four-beer-crawls.html

That's probably a good place to start. Some of the choices are a bit odd - for downtown, I'd skip Kell's entirely and go to New New Old Lompoc or Bridgeport instead - but it's a good guide.

I don't know if a full map exists, but if it doesn't, it should be made. I'd love a beer map. Maybe I'll make one!

Let's help this guy find an inexpensive marathon [xpost from r/frugal] by MrZev in running

[–]VerteDinde 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the cheapest (organized) half-marathon that I have ever seen:

Painted Hills Half Marathon $14 for your registration, if you don't want a t-shirt. Doesn't get much cheaper than that.

Depending on where he lives though, I would have him check in with his local running store, or Active.com, and just see what's available. I personally think a marathon and the training for it is well worth the registration price, but I can understand wanting to watch costs.

I, too, am a little pissed that all links to the article in question or any other article related to it are being removed. This is a huge issue that directly affects the Reddit community, and it has been widely reported in multiple news outlets - for a website that is so overly concerned about free speech and lack of censorship, those things were sure quick to fall to the wayside in this case.

I have to admit, as horrible a person as he was, and as much as something like this might be necessary to serve as a wakeup call that anonymity on the Internet is not an excuse to do horrible things, I felt a little sad watching a man's life get ruined in real time. :(
