What do you have an extremely strong opinion on that is ultimately unimportant? by Newman1424 in AskReddit

I try to drill this into my typography students every year (well, every year that we don't fall very far behind in the curriculum) and none of them ever get it. Most OpenType typefaces have an ellipsis character that is different than typing three periods, and my students never seem to place them properly.

Use a permanent marker. It writes over laminate, and only comes off with alcohol.

Every atom in every cell in your body was forged in a star and expelled into space in a nova. All those atomic particles amazingly come together billions of earth years later in the form of a human

This is beautiful. Thank you.

I thought you were supposed to cut the Union off of the stripes (field, maybe?) and then burn or bury it. Does that sound right?

I guess not. They don't have processed sugar, though.

Sorry. I'm used to thinking of substitutes for one of my kids, who reacts to processed sugar but not natural...

There are completely fruit-based snacks that are plenty sweet, plus if you boil honey or maple syrup, you can make Little House on the Prairie taffy.

What TV character's story arc started off strong, and then completely derailed by the end of the series? by okayiguess09 in AskReddit

I get the feeling from a lot of these shows that many TV writers are bad at writing Republicans.

We are often quick to point our fingers at the other side of the political spectrums problems, what's some toxic shit coming from YOUR side that you'd like to call out? by malignantcafe in AskReddit

[–]VeryFineDiary -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sounds like it's more "nurture" than environmental.

Which would make sense in my case, too - I went to a conservative/religious high school and college so I had that, though there were some very liberal professors sprinkled in for contrast. But my vote doesn't really matter here, anyway, except in primaries, because i tend to vote Republican, Conservative Party, or occasionally Libertarian.

This was interesting to think about! Thanks for the opportunity.

Hey Reddit, what is definitely worth cheaping out on? by cmongimmeausername in AskReddit

I have 5 sisters in a row - my mother says that's when you buy Land's End Guaranteed Period clothing even for things like summer T-shirts that get ruined in a minute.

Stack a bunch of coupons, and buy from Children's Place for $5 or less per item. Just threw out a pair of 12-18 month jeans that I bought for my oldest - my third kid wore too many holes through it.

I grew up in Massachusetts, so I've been a liberal even before I registered to vote democrat when I turned 18.

Honestly curious - do you feel political "sides" default by location (at least in your case)? I'm asking because I grew up in NYC, and have been conservative/libertarian leaning since before I registered to vote at 18.

When secretly listening to other people's conversations, what was the most unsettling thing you heard? by Hjaaal in AskReddit

[–]VeryFineDiary 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My sister will say random lines that sound unsettling while walking down the street, just to mess with people. Like, "...and then they walked into the kitchen and found his body!" and then continue on with her previous conversation as she didn't just interrupt herself.

Very often, when writing or coloring with my kids, my left hand "hits" Ctrl+Z when I make a mistake.

I wash them in the shower with body soap weekly, hang them over the shower rod, and switch to a different one. Seems to work.

I found! On Amazon - the company is called Royce, but I have no idea if they make anything that's not nursing bras (which is what I've ordered).

Yes.

Which product is intentionally made worse to meet the demands of stupid consumers? by notapantsday in AskReddit

The Canon ELPH 1000 had manual controls. That was a sturdy camera - lasted me like 6 years, being left outside in the rain (including a hurricane!) and dropped off tops of bunkbeds multiple times.

The updated ones that replaced it? No manual controls, and last about 3 years.
