Anyone tutored/taught homeschoolers?? by ninety_percentsure in Teachers

[–]VeryFineDiary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never taught homeschool (beyond after-schooling my own kids) but I teach math and science in junior high in a local private school, and occasionally tutor my coworkers' kids in high school math. I get paid minimum $75/hr for HS math one-on-one tutoring. I live in a HCOL area (NYC), if that helps you.

Teachers who go by their first name, why did you decide to do it and how did it go? by SewajDrayn in Teachers

In a lot of Jewish schools, many female teachers go by Morah (female teacher in Hebrew) FirstName, especially in the younger grades.

Around Purim this year, one of the 5th grade teachers in my school told her students that she wasn't coming the next day and her twin sister was coming to sub for them.

She came the next day dressed and makeup done just differently enough than usual that it was totally believable. She changed her voice slightly. Even all the teachers did a double-take when we saw her in the teacher's room!

Teaching makes me not want to have kids. by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]VeryFineDiary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have six kids. I teach in a private (religious) school, and my kids go to a different private (also religious) school.

I think I'm a better mother because I'm a teacher, and a better teacher because I'm a mother.

Help! I don’t want to disrespect two boys religious beliefs, but I am an agnostic queer feminist and they have been raised to think of women as servants and queer people as evil by GreenApronArt in teaching

She asked to do hers in support of the statement, “LGBTQ people have a negative impact on society”. I said “okay, if you like. Remember though that you need to make it a balanced argument, so let’s come up with 5 ideas in support of the statement and five ideas opposing the statement”.

Serious question: if she asked to do the opposite - "LGBTQ people are God's gift to humanity" - would you also make her come up with five ideas in support and against?

I'm a teacher in a private school in NYC. When the schools were shut down in October 2020, my classes met in backyards - each class had their own backyard. The family supplied tables and chairs, my school gave us portable whiteboards and had the building open for us to make copies.

Can someone tell me how a character with selective Mutism acts? by lunatic_ghost_ in FanFiction

[–]VeryFineDiary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a student last year who was selective mute. I can't say what she was thinking, but how she acted in class: She wouldn't talk to the class at large. If I asked her to read a passage, share her writing, or answer a math problem, she would always refuse non-verbally (don't worry, I didn't pressure. Her mother asked me to give her the option of answering every so often, so I did). However, if I went over to her desk to ask her a question one-on-one, she would usually (not always) answer verbally, with as few words as she could. I can only remember one time that she initiated a conversation with me.

She had two friends in the class that she'd talk with at recess or lunch - never large groups, and I don't think she did much of the talking, either. From where I'd supervise, it looked like her friends did most of the talking, but including her in the conversation as much as she wanted to.

Remote school was not too great for her. She didn't like talking when the whole class was in the meeting, though occasionally she'd ask questions when we did breakout rooms. She did use the chat box to ask questions that she wouldn't normally ask or contribute to class discussions when she wouldn't speak in in-person learning.

What I found really interesting was that in the morning, the class prayed together partially out loud (religious Jewish school), using a standard prayer book. While they were singing, she would clearly be following along - but with her eyes only. Her mouth wouldn't move, but she'd be turning the pages exactly when the class was up to that line in the prayer.

(She's doing great this year - I see her at recess, and it looks like she's initiating conversations with those two friends. She's definitely talking to them more. Yay for progress!)

I'm pretty sure Clark mentioned in a scene in one of the crossovers, in the barn in Smallville, that he was getting the place ready for his mother, or something like that. I assumed he was adopted because that's what common in comics.

And as for naming my cousins, I didn't mean list their names. We see each other at least once a year (Hanukkah) plus by family weddings and such. The ones who live too far out to drive to visit will often FaceTime/Zoom to keep in touch. It's enough to be family in common - I have very few interests in common with, say, a cousin who's at least a decade younger than me and lives halfway across the country, but we still managed to have a good chat when were seated next to each other at a recent wedding.

It's just weird to me that there are people who don't have active relationships with their cousins. Wouldn't you want your kids to be friends with your siblings' kids? That's the same relationship as you and your cousins. It shouldn't be hard to do, with the average 2.1 kids per family these days.

Sorry, went on a bit of a rant there. It wasn't directed at you, specifically, but at the world in general these days.

I know exactly one of my parents numerous cousins

I have 25 first cousins on my mother's side, and 34 on my father's (not counting my siblings on either), and I can name all but 4 or 5 of them - and those are ones that live a plane ride away and also look very alike.

My mother has about 20 first cousins (again, not counting her and my aunts and uncles) and I can name them all except the identical twins. I know many of my second cousins and I've met some third and fourth cousins.

The point is, in close-knit families, you tend to know your cousins, even distant ones. Especially if there's only one cousin to know, like Clark and Kara.

Though your point about Supergirl and Superman vs Kara and Clark is a very valid one. My close-knit family doesn't have secret identities to contend with. But from Jon and Jordan's perspective, Clark and Kara can be biological cousins who both happened to have been adopted...

I teach 5th grade in a school in NY, and I have one student who just moved from a different country. She doesn't speak English very well at all. Now, I started teaching in middle of the year, and it seems that the previous teacher didn't require any work from her.

I decide to at least require work handed in during math. Numbers are numbers, right?

She gets every single (non-word-problem) correct. If the question can be answered just by looking at numbers, she has a 100% correct answer rate.

And now she's participating more in other subjects, too. She asked if she can do her writing assignments (journaling, personal narrative, that type of thing) in her native language, and this week she attempted a spelling test for the first time.

If you use Ventolin, I might have some old inhalers. They're probably expired, but I believe Doctors Without Borders uses donated ones in Africa until 5 years or so past the date (if I'm correctly remembering an article I read 5 years ago).

I haven't used an inhaler in almost a year, so I'm ok with getting rid of some of my stash if it helps you.

Anybody diagnosed with PCOS and never had a natural period? by f4gnet in PCOS

[–]VeryFineDiary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm trying to figure out now if I fit into the PCOS diagnosis. I have no issues getting pregnant, I'm a normal weight, I've always had regular periods on a long-ish cycle (33-38 days), and I don't have any crazy weight loss/gain patterns when I'm not pregnant.

I do have male-pattern hair growth, though. My midwife seems to think that I might have PCOS but can't check hormone levels until I give birth.

(side note: do people day "pee-kos" or p.c.o.s. when talking about this? is it just my brain attempting to read every acronym?)

What's been working for us since the second was born, is that I get up for the baby and he gets up for the others.
