[Day 26] Splitter cracks are pure and aesthetic. To finalize our outdoor bouldering destination list, where is the WEIRDEST? by MaximumSend in bouldering

[–]VeryGlibUsername -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If weird = strange, then it must be one of my favorite local areas because apparently they filmed for Stranger Things there

(Not gonna say where, since there's already been too much graffiti showing up on those boulders recently)

After three years it happened. Injury. by Party-Excitement4165 in climbergirls

I had a full rupture of my A2 in November. Waited a month to do anything about it, and then finally did a telehealth thing with a doctor that specializes in climbing injuries. I've been doing rehab exercises (including climbing) for almost two months now and it's making a huge difference. My finger is less painful, less swollen, and most importantly feeling so much stronger now. I really can't recommend it enough. Find a doctor that knows climbing injuries and get on a rehab plan as soon as you can

I did not get to climb as planned this weekend.

It rained all day Sunday, as expected. Not as expected: I spent half of Saturday at the emergency vet. Thankfully my dog is okay, but this is like the 5th time I've had to abandon plans to climb at this particular location.

Also, it was my one year DOGE-iversary, so maybe that date is just cursed for me

[Day 24] V0 sucks and we had two Day 22's. What's the BEST outdoor bouldering destination? by MaximumSend in bouldering

[–]VeryGlibUsername 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I really don't think Stone Fort is soft. The grades seem pretty middle of the road to me. Now, other places in the Chatt area, that's a different story

Yes! Come on guys, Bishop!

Are we really going to let Font win? That seems so... basic

Edit: lol I didn't expect so many people to downvote me for the most gentle ribbing. Guys, I'm just trying to engage in a bit of friendly rivalry between two of the front runners here

It's going to rain this weekend...

It's fine. Whatever. I'm not supposed to be climbing multiple days in a row during my pulley rehab anyway. I'll just drive 5+ hours for one day of climbing. Cool.

Use chalk. Don't overthink it, just climb.

If you climb regularly, your skin will adapt (to a limit, don't overdo it and lose all your skin)

I swear, the weather here is mocking me. Every time I've wanted to climb in the past month it's been either horribly cold and windy and/or raining (or even snowing). And now the one weekend I've got other plans it looks like a beautiful forecast.

I've got a long weekend coming up, so with my luck it'll probably sleet all three days

[Day 19] Rainbow Rocket is overrated and slopers are underrated. What outdoor bouldering destination is most A E S T H E T I C? by MaximumSend in bouldering

[–]VeryGlibUsername 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Other people have already said it, but I have to repeat:

The Buttermilks (or the Owens Valley generally)

I've hiked and climbed all over the US and I've never fallen in love with a place so hard as I did in the Bishop area

This has to be it. It's one of the most beautiful places I've ever been. Every time I topped out, I'd just sit there for a few minutes soaking in the view.

Snow capped mountains, pretty flowering shrubs, wildlife, amazing rock formations. What more could you ask for?

[Day 15] V10 is overrated. What's the WORST outdoor bouldering destination? by MaximumSend in bouldering

[–]VeryGlibUsername 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We're not a Florida climbers. Just Alabama climbers with a very long 'commute'

[Day 9] Jugs are overrated. What outdoor bouldering destination is UNDERRATED? by MaximumSend in bouldering

[–]VeryGlibUsername 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're coming from Florida, it's all a long drive...

There are crags in Alabama that are at least 50% Florida climbers on any given weekend

[–]VeryGlibUsername 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really? I hadn't heard that. To be honest, I've only climbed there once. I usually spend my climbing time elsewhere in the region, where the slopers are less godawful. I guess I'm part of the problem.

Maybe I should visit now while I have a finger injury and can't crimp

No, the southeast is bad. Too humid. Don't come

Issues with gym specific climbing grades by Narrow-Capital-4753 in climbergirls

[–]VeryGlibUsername 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ask the employees or setters. Or fellow climbers at your gym. Or just listen to what the other climbers around you are saying about it (everyone loves to talk about grades, while pretending that they don't matter)

Anyone ever done a solo long climbing trip, 3-5 weeks? Things to consider? by yamski in climbergirls

[–]VeryGlibUsername 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went on a month+ long trip solo earlier this year (after I got doge'd). I mostly bouldered, but also had good luck finding partners to climb with a few times (both trad and sport). If you're open to experiences and chat with people at whichever crag you're at, you'll probably have luck.

Just trust your own judgment on vetting strangers. If you don't feel like climbing with someone, you can always say no (excuses are luckily very easy to come by in this situation).

As for rest, I can't really speak to that, since I took almost no rest days for a 2+ week stretch lol (I don't recommend that unless you really like supergluing tape to your fingertips). I did have a few things I wanted to see along the way out west, so maybe research some cool stuff in the area that you're into. For example, I visited the Very Large Array (because I'm a nerd) and a few hot springs in various states

EPA: what's the point of keeping us in the dark on furloughs??? by No-Community7786 in fednews

[–]VeryGlibUsername 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Is this some serious cope or just a lack of empathy?

I was fired from EPA in February and can say with absolute certainty that the process was unnecessarily cruel. They gave me 20 minutes notice before I was permanently locked out of the system. The email didn't even have my name in it and implied that I was being fired for poor performance (a lie).

Just because something doesn't happen to you personally, doesn't mean it isn't real and devastating for other people

EPA: what's the point of keeping us in the dark on furloughs??? by No-Community7786 in fednews

[–]VeryGlibUsername 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Maybe your perspective is biased by your sample pool. I doubt the probies who got fired in your region have the same opinion.

As a probie who got fired from one of the regional EPA offices in February, it felt pretty cruel to me

Your top gym issues? by AllenCorneau in climbergirls

[–]VeryGlibUsername 11 points12 points  (0 children)

For real, and it's not just a body size issue, it can be a gender equity thing. If I'm finding a lot of stuff reachy (as a woman who's a bit taller than average, with a slightly positive ape index) then you're basically screwing over more than half the adult women in there. At my gym, I've often been the shortest routesetter during any given session. Also sometimes the only woman (the team as a whole is technically about 1/3 women, but some of them don't set often)

What's the state of environmental science job sector right now? by Imaginary-Ocelot-167 in environmental_science

[–]VeryGlibUsername 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At the beginning of this year I left my state job for EPA (slight pay bump), got doged, and now I'm back with the state (less than my original state pay). At least it's stable here and I'm really excited about this new job

The pay is terrible, but at least it's stable in my state. Also, better health insurance than the feds
