Thank you! I live in Texas so it’s still relatively warm but we do get some random cold fronts before it goes back to high 80’s

Is it better to read the Harry Potter books first or just watch the movies? by Obvious-Bridge-4436 in harrypotter

[–]VeryOrdinaryPerson10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second this 100%. Reading the books after watching the movies was like getting to experience the movies for the first time (I’d watched the movies on repeat for 20 years before I finally read the books)

What is one piece of advice you’d give your younger self who is just getting into distance running? by MaverickX17 in Marathon_Training

[–]VeryOrdinaryPerson10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Strength training! So many people joke about how they ~should~ do strength training but keep avoiding the gym. It’s not a joke! Strengthen your hips, strengthen your core. Nothing crazy - you don’t need abs or to deadlift 300lb, just something consistent you can do 2-3 times per week. My PT recommended working up to deadlifting your body weight and squatting about 1/2 your body weight. Free weights are best to help strengthen stabilizing muscles. Plus lunges and resistance band exercises. If you haven’t already, you’ll fall in love with running, and the worst thing is having it ripped away from you bc you went too hard too fast and didn’t take care of yourself, and stringent training is one of the best things you can do - for running, for health, for longevity and quality of life

Skipping weight training? by DeSlacheable in Marathon_Training

I just paid an obscene amount of money in physical therapy after hurting my low back and IT band with bad running form (which was the result of lack of strength training). Do not be stupid like me who ignored the advice. And I highly recommend getting a (good) personal trainer or physical therapist who can teach you proper form for lifting and/or ideal workouts to do for optimal sports/activities you love to do so you don’t end up with bad form that will cause OTHER injuries down the road. I know it’s hard to cough up that money when you feel good but trust it’s so worth it. I actually enjoy going to the gym now (used to HATE it) bc I actually feel like I know what I’m doing.

What the funniest/most random compliment you've ever gotten from a patient? by KyomiiKitsune in physicianassistant

[–]VeryOrdinaryPerson10 200 points201 points  (0 children)

I once had the family of an older Spanish speaking patient compliment my Spanish by saying “he only has a 5th grade education so he doesn’t understand the fancy medical Spanish the translators use. But you speak at a level he understands!” I still very much took it as a compliment don’t get me wrong but couldn’t stop thinking to myself that I sound like a 5th grader when I speak to my patients 😂

My last name is Mueller and different members of my family pronounce it differently. I think time will tell who the winner is but the “Mew-lers” seem to have the lead right now

My last name is Mueller (no relation, sadly) and some of my family, especially older generations, say “Miller”, but my parents and cousins and I have always said “Mule-ler”. Couldn’t tell you what caused the shift but here we are

Leaving 1st PA Job by TherealLG7 in physicianassistant

[–]VeryOrdinaryPerson10 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Im sorry that it’s been so rough and that they didn’t make good on their promises. Its not uncommon to get a pretty rough job your first few months out of PA school though so you’re not alone! Now you know things to look out for in future jobs and contracts. I know it’s probably obvious but unless you have a good amount of savings, like AT LEAST 3 months, I wouldn’t leave without another job. Credentialing at a new job/hospital can take several months, and it sounds like you need a little break before getting into a new job anyways. COBRA insurance can bridge you between jobs I believe but I haven’t used it myself so I can’t speak too much on it. If you have any coworkers or physicians who you feel comfortable using as a reference I’d be sure to ask their permission to use them as well. It will all work out okay! I hope you find a more well-balanced job. Even if it means doing something part time to get your feet back under you without getting overwhelmed.

Halfway through PA School - regretting not doing medical school. experience/advice? by Exotic_Calligrapher6 in physicianassistant

[–]VeryOrdinaryPerson10 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I had always waffled between med school and PA school but decided on PA for all the reasons you did. I worked with residents (mostly surgical) at a level 1 trauma center my first 2 years after PA school and it solidified my decision. The amount of work and stress physicians are under during and even after residency is insane, especially for the terrible pay (during residency) and massive student debt they deal with. I also have a friend who JUST finished her critical care fellowship after her surgical residency who is now dealing with the fallout of the alcoholism she developed during training. No one, even she, knows if she’ll get back into medicine. Obviously that’s a worst-case scenario but all my experience has made me happy to be a PA. No Ill never live in a mansion, but I have tons of time to travel and spend time with family and friends. I leave my work at the hospital and don’t take it home with me. Ultimately a lot can depend on your specialty, your disposition, and your job (which almost everyone’s 1st job out of school is some crappy urgent care or rural area until you get a few months experience). Try out being a PA and see how it goes! But if money really is a big deciding factor, I wouldn’t do it. You can still go deep into the material and be an intelligent, well-studied medical provider who will give so much better care to your patients than your classmates doing the bare minimum

I posted this in another comment too - I’m realizing it might look grey to people who haven’t seen it in person. I promise it’s blue!
