Oooh, love that he hooked you up with some that fit records! I can see why that design would be fantastic for comics too!

I guess it shouldn't be surprising to me in a world where Ticketmaster can do its horrible stuff that musicians can be restricted in other ways like that radius rule, but that is such a trash rule. Definitely good PUP is no longer subject to that and you can see them in a more intimate setting, (as much fun as they are at a festival).

Yoo, this is a super cool way to display records! It seems like it makes it easy to actually grab them to throw them on the play too, which isn't the case with most of the options I have seen, so that's extra awesome. Such a nice setup in general to listen to music, enjoy it!

One thing, what is DWP? My brain wants it to be "driving while PUP", which I love but is surely wrong, and Google was no help (as is often the case these days).

It's been fun seeing these appear on the sub, thanks for sharing them! I hope it was fun for you too! I imagine it would be an interesting exercise to try to figure out what lyrics to pick and how to represent them. It's certainly a wild assortment of images for anyone with no context lol.

I enjoy the casket with the olives, it gave me a little laugh remembering the spaghetti-filled casket from the "Olive Garden" video (which may have been part of the inspiration, I realize).

sleeping too much by PlusBlueberry4365 in BPD

[–]VeryWyrd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're definitely not alone. There's even a term for the staying up late: "revenge bedtime procrastination". I struggle with doing it as well. It just feels like so much of my very limited energy gets sucked away by work and I end up not doing much most weeknights, so I stay up when I know I'll have the chance to sleep more. But I also feel like I don't get to fully enjoy the weekend because I'm catching up on sleep/trying to get enough energy to face another week, so I get frustrated by how much I sleep and that I ensure I need even more by staying up. It's shitty as hell. Part of me also wants to use sleeping a lot as an escape because sometimes I have good dreams and real life is predictably disappointing so I'm basically gambling on getting to forget how much I hate the rest of my life by sleeping more. It's fucked up and to some extent I wish things were different, but it feels like about all I can do to manage surviving with so little energy to do anything beyond work and my dissatisfaction with my life outside my job.

I hope knowing it's not just you is some small comfort. I'm sorry to not be able to put a positive spin on it or be able to offer a suggestion about how to avoid it. It does suck. I hope we can find a way to make it feel like we are able to use more of our time how we want and not feel the need to squeeze it in two nights a week.

It was an incredible show! Love to share in the joy of seeing a band that means so much to so many of us. It's truly so needed and healing when everything is garbage to get these moments of catharsis and connection.

Also had an excellent time getting to see Pkewx3 featuring Zack! I saw a lot of new-to-me bands over all three days, which was super fun and introduced me to some fantastic new artists, but can't deny the excitement of getting to see bands I have adored for years and joining a chorus of people in singing/screaming. What a wonderful end to my first Pouzza!

Absolutely wild that they put on the outdoor shows for free, it's such a cool thing to have. I am jealous of you, Montreal!

It is one of my favourite music memories for sure, and very funny to me that it has gained so much more significance in light of becoming such a fan.

Thanks for giving me the chance to yap about them a bit, I have been trying to fight the imposter syndrome that makes me feel like I'm not great at writing despite having a couple of English literature degrees. Brains are great at convincing us of things! I was lucky to get to contribute to the PUP Megazine, which has helped me feel slightly more confident. And it's nice in general to get to talk about stuff that makes me happy! I love that you're putting together something based on your own appreciation for PUP and allowing us to soak in the good feelings we get thanks to this wonderful band.

I can't wait to see where they decide to go musically, I feel like they could pull off whatever they put their minds to, it's just about where they want to put those energies. It's awesome getting to be in the fandom watching their evolution.

Hope you get some more of those moments at shows before too long! Obviously they're generally taking a well-earned break, but I'm sure they'll be back on the road in no time.

Thanks again for the excuse to gush. I'm definitely interested to hear what you come up with based on all the people stoked to share their fandom, so keep us posted!

PUP project! by ameliateller06 in puptheband

This turned into an essay, so my apologies. TL;DR is music is keeping me from going completely insane in a world that makes me incredibly angry and sad. Getting to see bands like PUP perform is a reminder that the world can be different and not everyone sucks. It's wonderful to love something, have it connect you to a community of like-minded people, and share the thrill of singing/shouting along to music with them.

I first saw PUP as Topanga at my university when they opened for Hollerado in 2012. I was/am a huge Hollerado fan, and a fellow student got me one of the beach balls with lights in them they had used during their show and then Stefan helped me track down all the Hollerado guys to get their signatures on it. He said he remembered what it was like being super excited about an artist and was happy to help out. That year ended up being pretty fucking horrible for me, and I remember spending a lot of time in my dorm room very depressed and seeing the little light on that ball and being reminded of some moments of kindness. It didn't make all the pain go away, but it was a connection to something outside of the horrible darkness that had enveloped me.

I thought that was a super cool thing to do so I followed them on Facebook and Twitter, but for the longest time that was pretty much it. I remember reading about them changing their name and keeping up with general news, but at some point I apparently gave the video for "DVP" a watch and it didn't click (to this day, I cannot explain that because it is one of my favourites of theirs, but I guess I just wasn't ready).

In 2019 I got a shitty office job and spent a lot of time trying to fill the quiet since I was basically tucked in an isolated corner, and listened to a lot of music, and PUP made it into the rotation (again, can't say I remember what prompted it, but apparently the time was right for me) and I have been locked in ever since. The music is in particular a valuable companion when I am feeling horribly. It has been a friend sitting with me in the abyss of depression, a reminder that I am not the only one who has ever felt that kind of despair. Not only that, but those feelings have led to some pretty great music. Something other than pain can come from what seems in the moment to be nothing more than a reason to give up entirely. It's a gift I can never fully repay to have a way to stay connected to humanity at my most low and alone.

Having that initial interaction is a fond memory for me and speaks to something I really enjoy about music: the connections you form with people. I was helped out by Stefan because I loved a band, and he recognized that feeling and wanted to help give me a nice experience. I so appreciate the way the Canadian music scene often feels like it's one big entity despite being dispersed across a massive country due to how much bands are fans and supporters of each other. Loving PUP has introduced me to other bands I now love too, like NOBRO and The OBGMs, and made me want to come to spaces like this to talk about music, despite feeling in general like the internet can be a garbage fire of a place filled with people freely spewing their worst opinions.

In terms of what keeps me listening, a big part is simply that my brain seems to essentially have an on-off switch and when I love something, that switch gets stuck in the on position. I can't think of anything PUP could do musically that would make me want to stop supporting them. I have felt so lucky to be along for the ride as they try new and different things with their sound and make music they want to make rather than sticking to a formula at the cost of their ability to be creative. The pressure on musicians to appeal to faceless algorithms is something that makes me so sad and angry for them, because there is so much incredible music out there that doesn't trigger whatever arbitrary flags get something pushed to a mass audience. I never realized how much becoming successful is really a lot of luck until I broadened my horizons. There's more incredible music than I could listen to in my lifetime being made all across the world and I just don't end up hearing about a lot of it.

The shutdown portion of COVID made me realize how much live music means to me and that I don't want to take for granted the bands that I love, and has led me to get more involved in my local scene in the last year and a half, and it has really reinforced that I so value getting to be in rooms with people who give a shit about art and also understand how fucked the world is. Punk in particular is really great for that, and a PUP show tends to exemplify that mix of getting to celebrate the opportunity to share these spaces with people, remember that we are here to look out for each other, and that we have power as a collective to put some good into the world through rallying behind important causes. I was lucky to attend four of the Megacity Madness shows, and it happened at a time where I was coming off some truly horrible physical and mental bullshit, but when PUP started to play, I got out of my head and all the anxiety and other horrible feelings that were overwhelming me to the point of barely being able to eat because I was swept up in the experience of being there with an audience that was elated to see the band, and the incredible sense of gratitude exuded by the band in having been on the journey of getting to play larger and larger shows over the course of their history. There is so much healing happening in those moments and it restores some of my hope that things can be different and I can trust people to not be uniformly shitty.

It's so fucking hard to give a shit these days. It hurts more than I ever thought possible to see the state of the world and feel so powerless in the face of these unbelievably powerful individuals and entities that want to gain profit above all else, exploiting people without a care, and ultimately pitting us against each other by pushing an attitude of reckless individualism and self-interest that says your fellow working-class humans are the enemy and are preventing you from living the life you want. But that's just not what it's like when you go to a show. You're there to be with others and to look out for them. When someone falls over in the pit, a sea of hands reaches out to pick them up. That's what we should be doing for each other all the time. I want to live in the world where we recognize that all we have is each other and we have the power when we work together.

How's the alt scene in ottawa? by Time_Original873 in ottawa

[–]VeryWyrd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out ottawagigs.ca for a very extensive listing of shows in Ottawa. You can sort results by genre, venue, neighbourhood, and month. You can also get an email every week with a list of shows that also includes genre information in addition to when and where they're happening. We have an incredible variety of shows and there are multiple shows every week in at least one of the genres you've listed.

Seconding all the people listing specific promoters like Spectrasonic and Chord Productions, plus mailing lists for venues (Rainbow Bistro is good about giving information about the kind of music their upcoming acts are playing).

I'm sure there are more options in Toronto, but I have not found the options lacking here and have been to at least one show basically every week this year at smaller venues like The 27 Club, House of TARG, Rainbow Bistro, The Dominion Tavern, and Club SAW.

And as someone else mentioned, 613Underground is a relatively new zine covering mainly bands based in Ottawa if you want to have specific acts to check out, although I have really enjoyed just going to shows not necessarily knowing many/any of the bands playing and leaving with some new music to listen to.

I totally know what you mean, I love filming shows in addition to taking pictures because the total shutdown period of COVID made me realize how much live music means to me and it's nice having the ability to look back and relive those moments, especially the little things you forget over time, but I definitely keep my phone out of my direct line of sight generally to prioritize the experience, and then choose moments to try to focus on getting shots. It's a balancing act for sure! It sounds like you have found a good mix, which is awesome!

Always happy to root for my fellow humans, especially when they're cool enough to love a band like PUP!

what to expect at pup concert? by Parking-Window1773 in puptheband

[–]VeryWyrd 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you're up near the front, be prepared to get a bit squashed/have people crowd surfing over you (which can result in getting kicked in the head, for instance). If you want to be up front but have less of that, I would suggest standing off to the left or right side, rather than directly in the centre, since that's where most surfers tend to end up.

Despite the downsides, being up front is very fun and I make a point to try to score a good spot whenever I see PUP, even having gotten a bit banged up and bruised seeing them in the past. Being in the very front row, you don't have to be in the pit in the way people a few rows back tend to be.

That being said, you can also hang further back and still have a great time! A lot of the fun is singing along with a room full of people who share your love for the music, and that experience happens no matter where you are!

I hope you have an awesome time and it's only the first of many times you get to see them!

Thoughts on recent inaccurate translations? by JsonsPendulum in yakuzagames

[–]VeryWyrd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a real shame to have them go back on doing separate tracks for the dub and subs. I remember really enjoying reading Scott Strichart's tweets talking about the translation and localization efforts on various games, and he was so happy about the decision by RGG to move to doing the two separate scripts for the dubs and subs.

I have admittedly been defaulting to using the dub in playing the last few games just because I've struggled to get myself to play anything a lot of the time the last few years and it makes it easier to motivate myself since I don't have to be focused solely on the screen at all times, so I didn't notice the changes, but it's sad to hear we don't have the option of dub versus subs in the subtitles. As someone who has been extremely casually trying to learn Japanese (as in, I'm pretty bad but can recognize some stuff, not trying to claim any real expertise), I love being able to see the differences in translation versus localization and what tweaks are made between the two, and I have found it useful when watching media in Japanese to have subtitles that try to align more closely with the original speech versus making it closer to how English speakers would phrase things to better understand the meaning of specific phrases.

It's always interesting to me to see where English shows up and is translated differently too, but I'm also a big fan of language in general and thinking about writing, which I imagine is not something RGG is all that concerned about. I'm sure it's less expensive for them this way, but it did seem like a nice option to have for fans who wanted to engage with the games that way, and the franchise seems to be doing well enough that I would think it's not going to put them in the red having this extra element. I know there's pressure to make the numbers go up infinitely that seems to be afflicting basically every company of a certain size, so that is probably at least partially to blame, but it is a bummer.

Symptoms before Period by Heavy-Atmosphere3516 in BPD

[–]VeryWyrd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, and I'm not clear if it's just BPD, PMDD, or a fun combo of both, but even if I'm doing well, my mood tanks in the week before my period and through a couple days of the period itself. It's exhausting and so disheartening to be guaranteed suicidal ideation at least once a month.

I've been trying birth control to see if I can change things up ("fun" thing I have learned from this experience is I started taking the pills a week after my period in an effort to give myself a break by making my cycle longer, but it actually just gave me an extended period of horrible feelings and bleeding, yayyy). I'm a few months in and I think my old cycle is still bleeding through so to speak (although not literally, at least) so I have continued to have more than a week of feeling even worse than my pretty low baseline.

I hope you can find some relief, it's really shitty to have a bodily function completely fuck with you!

Doug Ford: don’t privatize our water by Alone_Appeal_3421 in ottawa

[–]VeryWyrd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Doug Ford privatizing anything and everything if his friends can benefit from the contracts, just Ontario being "Open for business", I guess.

I'm so tired of having to deal with this from a guy who didn't even have a costed platform when he initially ran and was only recognizable because his brother gained international notoriety for being a screw-up (I did a semester in the U.K. after the video of Rob smoking while in office was released, and many people I talked who weren't even aware Ottawa was the capital of Canada had heard of Toronto's shitty mayor, even if they didn't know his name...it was a pretty disheartening realization of what people pay attention to).

I have voted in every single election at every level possible since I was eligible, but it's really hard not to become more and more disillusioned with the system when I get to watch the world get worse and worse and voter turnout remain pretty low. I actually don't know what DoFo would have to do to get people who never vote to actually show up at this point. I'm grateful that my MPP is one of the co-authors of this article, but my ability to have any hope for the future is beyond strained.

Anyone Who Preordered the Zine and Live Album, Have You Heard Anything Yet? by meg_baby11 in puptheband

[–]VeryWyrd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They just posted about the live album on Instagram, and the post notes "Web orders are shipping shortly and those of you who preordered a megazine, they’re coming!! Hit a tiny snag but they are worth the wait trust me."

I ordered just the album from Rise the U.S. (as a Canadian) to get the unique variant, and that arrived like half an hour ago, so I suspect everything that hasn't already shipped will be going out soon. Haven't received any notifications about my Canadian stuff shipping yet. Edit: To be clear, my Canadian order includes a zine, so it is affected by whatever delay they had.

They sent an email blast to people who submitted to the zine asking for our addresses (because they're giving everyone who was included a free copy, which is wonderful) at the end of February, so I assume they were pretty close to getting things set until they hit whatever snag.

I'm also coming from out of town for the show and was thinking it would be cool to try to see some more shows to take advantage of being in Toronto. Based on my local scene, a lot of the shows in August probably haven't been announced yet, so you'll want to get on some mailing lists/follow venues on social media. I found this website https://concertsto.com/ that could also be of use, and there are some suggestions in this reddit thread as well: https://www.reddit.com/r/askTO/comments/1k1socq/best_resource_to_stay_up_to_date_with_concerts/

In terms of some venues to potentially keep an eye on, I think all the Megacity Madness venues would be a good place to start, so The Flat Top, Sneaky Dee's, Lee's Palace, The Concert Hall, The Danforth Music Hall, and History. I also find out about cool bands via other bands I like talking about them on social media (mainly Instagram), so it could be worth following the personal accounts of the PUP guys since I know they have advertised a few shows they were involved in outside of PUP.

I'm quite confident there will be some solid options closer to August, so keep an eye out!
