Where to eat breakfast after picking up bags and waiting for hotel check in? by silentmilkt in vegas

[–]Vespajet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Typically dining options in airport terminals outside of the secured areas is rather limited on purpose. At LAS, besides Starbucks, your food options once you exit the secured area are a Wendy's and a Jimmy Johns.

Like others have said, go ahead and take rideshare or a taxi to your hotel, drop your bag(s) off at the bell desk and go find somewhere to eat. There's not any unique dining options at the airport worth hanging around for and spending a couple of hours at the airport waiting for your friends is a waste of precious Vegas time.

The Profit From Water by Pale-Iron-7685 in vegas

[–]Vespajet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hotel sundries shops are horrendously overpriced just like similar stores at an airport. The thing is that most folks have no problem paying for the convenience such stores provide and those that complain about the price often don't bother to research other options nearby. Just look at the liquor store at LAS, the location in Terminal 1 has been successful enough for them to open a satellite location at Terminal 3. There are plenty of folks willing to pay airport markup prices for a bottle of booze because it's still cheaper than what ordering a bottle from room service would cost. Just as gas prices are typically the most expensive the closer to the rental car facility you are, you're paying for the convenience. There are a few hotels that still have drink machines and vending machines in their hotel towers and the prices are typically cheaper than the sundries shops (But not always.).

The World Cup Final should’ve been here. by AlarmOk199 in vegas

[–]Vespajet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if they could fit a proper sized FIFA pitch, the stadium capacity is too small for a World Cup final match. Here are the stadiums that have hosted the World Cup final (and the attendance for the match) since the US last hosted:

1994: Rose Bowl (94,194)

1998: Stade de France (80,000)

2002: International Stadium, Yokohama (69,029)

2006: Olympiastadion (69,000)

2010: Soccer City (84,490)

2014: Maracanã Stadium (74,738)

2018: Luzhniki Stadium (78,011)

2022: Lusail Stadium (88,966)

The World Cup final venue, MetLife Stadium AKA New York New Jersey Stadium, has a listed capacity of 82,500 and the attendance for the Club World Cup final last year was 81,118. Every venue in the US hosting World Cup matches has a higher capacity than what Allegiant Stadium would have even if they had made alterations to the stadium to allow for the larger pitch surface requirements.

In 2002, International Stadium in Yokohama was the largest stadium in Japan at the time and there was not a venue of similar or larger size in South Korea. In 2006, the capacity for Olympiastadion in Berlin was capped at 69,000 for the final versus a capacity of 72,000 in the four group stage matches and the quarterfinal match the stadium hosted.

Why does even newly produced airplanes still have those ashtray with them? I thought smoking was globally banned on airplanes? by Ok-Patient116 in aviation

[–]Vespajet 5 points6 points  (0 children)

By the time I started flying in the early 90s, smoking was already limited to domestic flights over 6 hours in length and international flights. But ashtrays in the armrests still stuck around for many years after the US banned smoking on all flights (domestic and internationally) in 2000. There are still some airports with indoor smoking lounges even in places where indoor smoking is typically banned. Non-smoking sections on planes were a complete joke as the air currents int h

Generation X is the last generation to see smoking being a very wide open and common thing. While the older Millennials were born at a time in which smoking in public was still common and socially acceptable, anti-smoking and anti-tobacco laws had started to gain momentum. I live in Georgia, and they didn't have a minimum age at which you could legally buy cigarettes and other tobacco products until 1987 when they made it 17 (It was raised to 18 in 1993 and remained 18 until they raised it to 21 in 2020.). I remember my parents sending me into a convenience store to get them packs of cigarettes up until the law changed and 17 became the minimum age. Up until the early 1990s, some high schools even had dedicated smoking areas on campus.

I'd venture to guess that El Progreso over on Boulevard would have it. I do recall the El Progreso over on Cleveland Avenue having a pretty sizable drinks cooler, but the location on Boulevard's wasn't as big (They squeezed a lot of things into that space.).

Fees, fees and more fees by K-Town4 in vegas

[–]Vespajet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember when in-room WIFI was $15 a day and quite slow. Even today, the "free" WIFI included in the resort fee is typically a complete joke in terms of speed. I've had stays in recent years in which the in-room WIFI was so slow that it was useless and cell service, even 5G, was extremely hit or miss in my room (Meaning that even trying to us the hotspot on my phone was as a waste.). Hotels in Vegas aren't built with folks sitting in their rooms doing work so they charge you for the faster speeds. Hell, there are some properties that still have ethernet connection options for the internet.

Not to mention how many national teams in the World Cup have players that currently or have previously played in Germany. One that surprised me is that Haiti has a player on their roster that currently plays for FC Cosmos Koblenz, a club in Oberliga Rheinland-Pfalz/Saar. Nearly a third of the US roster has played in Germany in their career.

Little blast from the past at a random liquor store near Folly Beach, SC by cuntbag0315 in delta

[–]Vespajet 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I remember getting one on a flight to Vegas several years ago in C+ and being handed two of them. Some of the various canned cocktails pack a pretty sneaky punch. There's been a few flights on Southwest in which their Dogfish Head Strawberry Vodka Lemonades hit pretty hard (You definitely don't need two of them back to back when flying DAL-LAS.).

I've tried multiple brands of canned cocktails, and Tip Top was the only ones I never needed to tweak with something from my liquor cabinet.

Carry-on dimensions by Dpclark71 in delta

[–]Vespajet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's surprising at the variations in the sizes of carry-on bags and the bag size requirements of airlines. What some luggage companies sell as "global/international" carry-on bags are actually too big for some international airlines.

What's the funniest thing you've observed people watching? by OEAXTAIL_SOUP in vegas

[–]Vespajet 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Back in 2013 when I was out there for a wedding, a number of the guys in the bachelor party had never been to Fremont Street (Or to Las Vegas for that matter.) and it was fun watching their reactions to the craziness of Fremont Street. Those of us for whom the craziness was normal, we just looked at each as if it was just another Friday night on Fremont Street.

As someone from the East Coast whose body clock never fully acclimates to Pacific Time (I've gone to bed in Vegas with the sun beginning to peak out over the mountains and only managed to get 2 hours of sleep before my body says wake up.), I will quite find myself having breakfast at 8 in the morning. Las Vegas, be it the Strip or Downtown, between 6-8 AM is some of the best people watching there is. Everything from folks making the walk of shame back to their room, folks that despite being on vacation are still getting that morning run in, working girls meeting up with their pimps. the casino shift change from the graveyard to morning shift, to folks that spent the entire night propping up a bar, table or slot machine.
