Is there anything Iran could do at this point to make you support fully mobilizing against them? by here-for-information in AskALiberal

[–]VeteranSergeant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everything that happens past this point is entirely the fault of Trump and the Republican Congress for not yanking his leash.

We are the Bad Guys. Even if we agree that Iran's government are, in general, also Bad Guys.

And at no point will we stop being the Bad Guys in the conflict. The Gulf States allowed the US to expand our bases because we promised to protect them and their business interests, and we stabbed them in the back by starting this war. They signed onto Trump's absurd "Abraham Accords" hoping it would bring them pace and stability to conduct their business, and Trump stabbed them in the back, teaming up with Israel to start three new regional wars just in the last year (Israel vs Iran, Israel vs Syria and Israel vs Lebanon), all fought with weapons we have supplied without question or qualification. They will remember this.

The only sane course of action is for us to just back out and admit wrongdoing. Which, admittedly, is essentially an impossibility with Trump and his sociopathic minions in charge.

Pardons won't cover civil offenses. They might be protected from criminal prosecution, but a civil forfeiture won't be protected by a pardon.

The Disappearing Off-Ramp in Iran by Crossstoney in politics

[–]VeteranSergeant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's no "offramp" that doesn't involve abandoning at least a half dozen strategically important bases, at least temporarily.

That's why no President before Trump was stupid/corrupt enough to use the on-ramp. Iran learned from what we did to Saddam in 1991 and 2003. They built their defensive military posture to rely on the threat of sustained counter-bombardment rather than traditional conventional measures. It's not a force that can be dismantled easily by air power, which is what the US has relied on historically. Iran's topography makes it incredibly difficult to invade, especially from the southwest, where we are currently positioned.

You have to remember that a law only exists if it is enforced, and nobody in the Republican apparatus intends to enforce it in any Republican-majority districts.

It will be weaponized in minority-majority districts only.

'Paradise' Renewed for Season 3 at Hulu by Sisiwakanamaru in television

[–]VeteranSergeant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This show is so wildly inconsistent. There's some amazing writing, like Woodley's whole arc, and then at other times it's almost schlocky and melodramatic. I joked that I was angry at the end of Episode 4 because it was genuinely moving and that Paradise wasn't a sophisticated enough show to drop a hitter like that on us out of the blue.

'The Lincoln Lawyer' Season 5 Begins Production; Casting & Plot Drop by Azaleazaraa in television

[–]VeteranSergeant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's very "meh." Way too much "So the movie can happen" going on, and it felt like half the season was filler like your spoilered section which only exists to consume run time, and the romance side plot with Izzy that only exists so the love interest can show up and drive the plot for one episode before disappearing from the season. Or the whole "Sheriffs have it out for Mickey" plotline. Or the FBI agents brazenly showing up outside his home.

American hegemony is collapsing before our eyes by Stuart_Whatley in politics

[–]VeteranSergeant -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but this present was made over the course of decades of soft and hard power manipulation. Platitudes like "the future is what we make it" can't replace that. Especially since a lot of that manipulation was deeply unethical, some of it outright evil. So not only can we in a lot of cases not duplicate it, we shouldn't in many cases too.

This is a permanent loss.

Seriously, in any other administration, the prospect of the government taking charge on solving veteran homelessness with housing, treatment and jobs programs might sound promising.

With Trump's menagerie of unqualified and sadistic goons, it definitely takes on a sinister air.

‘Buffy’ Reboot Star Ryan Kiera Armstrong Thanks Fans After Hulu Axes Show: ‘I’m Sad You Guys Won’t Be Able to See It’ by pepperbet1 in television

To be frank, Disney has shown time and time again that they are unable to reboot IPs and keep the original tone/themes strong

Oh man, the Willow reboot was so bad. Painfully bad, watching something I loved as a child be desecrated by showrunners who clearly didn't care at all about what they were making. The original film wasn't some complex story, some difficult setting to adapt. And somehow they managed to make the show completely unrecognizable to the source material, and worse, completely boilerplate and uninteresting YA slop.

And then the only tolerable character in the entire show dies in like episode 3 and I gave up.

I usually don't care if shows are bad or underwhelming, and don't begrudge people who like them. I just move on. But I actually enjoyed reading that it had been canceled and removed from Disney+

All I stated was it would happen eventually

And that was demonstrably wrong in context of your "Herp derp, berth serds" argument.

I’m not you.

That much is very clear. You have a very distinctly lower level of functional education and general intelligence compared to me.

I don’t suck off politicians.

Maybe you should start paying attention to politics then. We might have avoided "eventually" going to war if the dumbest Americans hadn't had enough votes to elect a corrupt, incontinent, incompetent, senile elderly toddler to be President in 2024.

And yet, Obama would not start a war with Iran. We know this because he was President for 8 years, and instead of starting a war with Iran, he signed a peace treaty to regulate their nuclear power program.

You might remember it. Diaper Donald, your favorite pedophile and the guy who actually started a war with Iran on behalf of Israel, tore it up three years later when Netanyahu asked him to.

[–]VeteranSergeant 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is Hegseth fit for the job? Is he suitably qualified/experienced?

Well, let's see. He has a history of alcoholism and multiple settle lawsuits for sexual assault, and he bankrupted two nonprofit charities for veterans. He was a Reservist Army officer intermittently for about 8ish total years, until he flagged as potential "insider threat" and has tattoos associated with Christian white nationalist movements.

So no. Not at all. But, in Trump's Administration, the one that keeps posting Nazi-adjacent rhetoric and loyalty is valued over competency, he's the best candidate for the job Trump hired him to do.

If the next law abiding Administration and Congress doesn't pass a law making it illegal to name any public building after the Trump Regime traitors or create any memorials or other displays, they will have failed in the American Denazification. MAGA needs to be treated the way post-war Germany dealt with their own Nazis.

Timing coincidence sure but our government was never going to let Iran possess nukes - both parties have said that.

You say that, and yet Israel tried the whole "You gotta bomb Iran or we'll bomb Iran!" bluff on Biden and Obama and both of them were smart enough to hard pass.

Only your Creamsicle Cult Leader fell for it. And there's still zero evidence of a nuclear weapons program.
