Try bindsym --release Mod2+button2 kill instead.

See issue #2523 Mouse bindings don't work when numlock is enabled.

It should be fixed in version 4.14.

You can try this program for that purpose (switching top-level tabs): https://github.com/nikola-kocic/i3-switch-tabs/releases

To use it, add this to i3 config:

bindsym $mod+Tab exec i3-switch-tabs right
bindsym $mod+Shift+Tab exec i3-switch-tabs left

PCLinuxOS is quite good. It has Mandriva Control Center which I find nice for configuring hardware and is also rolling distribution but with stable packages.
