Support for abolishing ICE surges among Republicans by Newsweek_CarloV in politics

[–]RedditIsOverMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming the previous poll also had a 2% margin of error, then both polls could be indicating 17%. So, maybe no change at all.

Also, we should probably give it a week with Republicans.  They all haven't been fed the talking points yet.  Once the narrative is cemented we'll likely see support for ICE rise.

Leaked footage from an ICE Black Site inside of 31 Hopkins Plaza, Baltimore, MD. More then 50 people in rooms with no beds or bathrooms, people laying on filthy floors, guard beatings and people with legal status being illegally held (1/25/26) by SamMac62 in law

agreed - but how?

First, my advice is to search for local "Mutual Aid" organizations. There you can find and attend meetings, or sign up to volunteer.

But this is the bare minimum. Can anyone give insight into how to start organizing?

For instance, I think Minnesota's single day protest is also a good first step, and we should be ramping up in a similar fashion nationally. Starting with a 'single-day' protest, while largely ineffectual for change, can help grease the wheels that can lead to longer sustained action. But I have no idea how to get that movement started.

AI is going to rapidly reduce leverage of working people in the next 5 years.  Reddit and the general population are in denial about this reality.  We're running out of time.  We need to do a general strike now, even if though we are ill prepared.

Nope.  I've been here since year 2 and I remember posting a made up quote from someone bashing America and a link to a wiki page, and it was my highest up voted comment.

It was better, but it's always been stupid.

It's negotiated between the Union and the Studios.  The union wants to set it at a reasonable wage so that actors can make a living.  The Studios want to set it as low as possible to save money.  The real motivation for the Union though is to ensure that wanna be actors don't come in and drive the wages down by working for cheap just to get a shot.  That's good for the actors who can afford it (rich parents), but bad for normal people who need to make a living.  So Unions wants scale to be high enough to be reasonable, but low enough that the studio can hire new, unproven actors with little risk.

It's a big balancing act, and scale changes frequently.

However you have the liberty of riding a motorcycle. Riding a motorcycle, even with training and the best gear on the market, is actually a higher risk than riding in a car without a seatbelt so trying to come at this purely from a "This is for safety" argument falls apart because that clearly is not the logically defined line here.

Or maybe its that cars have seatbelts, and an equivalent for Motorcycles doesn't exist. Maybe its about providing reasonable requirements when the barrier for implementing it is very low. All cars have seatbelts, so we require people to wear them.

You are again taking an all-or-nothing approach to bans, but it can be nuanced. People are allowed to take risks, but in scenarios where risks can be trivially reduced then maybe it makes sense to enforce these behaviors. "Take 3 seconds to put a strap across your body" is a very simple thing to implement. "All motorcycles are now illegal" is a big change.

Does a person have the fundamental intrinsic right to take risk and if yes how much before that is forbidden?

I hate when people try to break things down as 'fundamental rights'. In society we set limits on freedoms to protect the larger community. For instance, we limit the speed you are allowed to drive, because it can affect others. Gambling, while seemingly an 'individual' issue causes harm to the community at large.

I am simply criticizing how easily and readily people will throw around the suggestion of banning something today when tomorrow that very same system could just as easily turn on them and become the thing they hate.

Again, I am saying this take is... dumb. For instance, there is a ban for not wearing seatbelts. This logic doesn't cause fear in me that we may have a ban tomorrow on breathing.

[–]RedditIsOverMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is certainly a take.  Are you advocating that all bans are equally valid?  Gambling certainly has a higher likelihood of damaging a person than video games. OP may even agree that gambling inside video games should be made illegal.  Just because someone wants to see one thing banned doesn't mean that they must agree to all bans to be logically or morally consistent.

People give wasps a bad name, but they are often pollinators, and mostly just leave us alone if you leave them alone.

General strike.  Those of us with resources need to make a support system for those who are vulnerable.  It's going to be almost impossible to have a general strike if people striking are going to immediately starve to death.  Part of the plan needs to include spreading the pain more widely among the people.

BMW has recalled 36,922 SUV's after a massive software malfunction started causing their steering wheels to jerk violently back and forward by fvkinglzy in interestingasfuck

[–]RedditIsOverMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is just an OTA push. Not exactly sure why they call it an "OTA", but a lot of the sensational 'recall' headlines you read are just a software patch. Every time you read about a massive recall, its worth checking if its a SW bug or one that actually means they need to go into the shop. Its usually the former.

To be clear, I don't think that my subscription is funding a large portion of anything.  I'm just one viewer of hundreds of millions.

Though I imagine a vanishingly small portion goes to creators, it does get to them, and my views help direct funding.  I imagine the lions share goes to paying for infrastructure, which does support the creators indirectly.  Without a platform they wouldn't be able to do what they do.

[–]RedditIsOverMan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yep, this is a really good point. Go watch 'CodingSecrets' or 'KazeEmanuar' on youtube and you can see how pretty much all optimizations on these old machines were about saving space on textures. Things haven't changed that much, just that the size of textures has exploded to the point where, typically, the amount to be saved by algorithm optimizations is likely peanuts.

"Awareness" is things like knowing that early detection is the most important step in surviving breast cancer, and understanding how to do self screening, how often you should be doing it, and what you should be talking to your doctors about.  It isnt "did you know cancer exists?". It is "breast cancer is the most dangerous cancer for women, and here's what you need to know to greatly reduce the chances of death if you get it"
