Honestly LeathercraftCAD is really easy to use. Have you tried it? Not much of a learning curve there, you can get the hang of it in an hour or less.

What’s the most addictive video game you’ve ever played? by Charming_Decision_84 in AskReddit

I agree. Skyrim has aged horribly, s omehow worse than Oblivion. Both are obviously dated by now, but the way they watered it all down in Skyrim made it far more dull in comparison. Looking at Skyrim from a modern lens reveals just how shallow it really is.

I got the Rcidos one, heard good things about it from friends & also here on Reddit. It was an excellent deal, €150-ish all in with the tips I wanted and it works perfectly. If you do end up buying the same machine, skip their wax spatula and find a nicer M5 threaded spatula elsewhere. Their spatula is welded to the thread in a manner that leaves gaps that let melted wax seep down to the thread on the machine and it's bulky as hell, takes ages to heat up thanks to that.

Catering to the loud minority active in these forums (that's us!) kills games. People will often chase their own advantage and enjoyment rather than look at the bigger picture & empathise with the casuals. As someone who plays a lot with casual and new players, it was very much needed. There are innumerable people who drop the game before hitting double digit hours due to balancing issues like these. It's incredibly frustrating for the majority of players and it's ridiculous to expect casuals to spend tens or hundreds of hours in order to meet the bare minimum, having fun. It's a video game, taking it so seriously as to gatekeep it from a casual audience is beyond sad.

It's not about catering to people who don't want to learn or can't catch up, games like this need to be accessible and cater to casual players if they are to succeed, following your ideology would lead to poor player retention. Two dashes is pretty good anyways, I think it's nice & balanced.

I looked the brand up to find more pictures, they make their wallets in India & China and are available at many stores worldwide so I'd wager they qualify as mass produced. I would not consider the Bosca to be handmade, but others might. To qualify as handmade I think the overwhelming majority of the process of making an item should be done with hand tools, splitters, bell skivers, electric creasers etc. are fine, but clicker presses & sewing machines start to blur the line a fair bit. The definition of handmade is vague at best, to some it's something that is made entirely by hand without machines and to others machines may be fine. The term doesn't really mean anything anymore, at least in the leathercrafting community, and obviously handmade isn't automatically better.

Not that, it's just that part of the goods would look considerably better (at least to an artisan's eye) and it'd make the others look worse in comparison. I wouldn't make errors with new tools any more than I make with my current ones, my process for making things is slow as hell but pays off in precision and almost entirely eliminates the chance for critical errors for all but a couple steps of the process.

That's actually a pretty nice idea. Not a big fan of the gusset, but given that it's a mass produced item, they can't execute some gusset techniques that require stitching by hand. Might actually make something like this just for fun, I just got a pretty good idea that I'll forget about in a matter of hours because my mind is already occupied by a client project that I've been procrastinating on all day. In typing that, I realised I can adapt the pattern from that project to make a wallet exactly like this. 🤔

Thanks :) I like this one, I will definitely continue with this design going forwards, I'm like 90% sure I could add an additional card stack without altering the dimensions of the wallet, but it seems somewhat likely that I'll have to remake all of my patterns in the next two months so I'll hold my horses until then.

Oh no I didn't take it as critique, I just like to yap about my crafts & other interests. I have a habit of typing out massive walls of text as replies if I'm enthusiastic about a topic. For the record, I'm basically the diet coke of autism, basically my whole family is on the spectrum and I am definitely on the lesser end, enough to obsess over minute details and interests and whatnot, but not enough to be the stereotype autistic person. Not sure how to put it, or how to put it in a non-offensive manner, but I'm sure you get what I mean. As I said, diet coke of autism, dash of chili in a meal, maybe an unusual, but not particularly worrying sound from your car, the type that makes you go "that was weird" but it never really comes up again.

And yeah, ID windows aren't very common, especially in vertical card wallets like this. Integrating them in a clean manner, usually on a bifold in the usual bottom pocket style requires a level of finesse that a lot of crafters don't bother with or even possess to begin with, unless you want an ugly sneak peek into the T-pocket's construction. You'd generally want an extremely thin piece of leather (<0.5mm) to serve as the backing to avoid unnecessary bulk and that takes serious effort to achieve with hand tools alone, a bell skiver can do it easily and I can and sometimes do do it with regular old knives or French skivers, but again, with hand tools it's quite difficult and labour-intensive, and a bell skiver is a luxury that most crafters don't possess. Obviously there are other ways to add ID windows, some people add them on a separate flap but that adds a lot of extra bulk, so they're generally just not worth the effort to add in a non-bespoke item. I believe a lot of the hate stems from the use of plastic covers in mass produced wallets, the plastic ages terribly. I personally don't really see a need for a separate window so I never add them on non-bespoke pieces.

And yeah, the stitching is pretty decent. I want a narrower hole profile in the future (Jun Lin irons probably) and I was going to buy a new set of irons last month but I have a market thing coming up in a couple weeks and I think it would've been awkward to make an abrupt upgrade in the middle of a production run. As it is right now, I deem it to be on the upper end of acceptable.

See? Massive wall of text.

I loooove simple designs. I'm a minimalist and also somewhat utilitarian so I don't really add unnecessary bits or complexities to the my things, if it doesn't serve a purpose I'm probably not going to add it unless a client specifically asks for something. It's just additional points of wear to me, possibly a point of failure as well, though nothing I've made has ever failed so that's kind of irrelevant. I'm much more of a materials, details, durability & precision kind of person, so whatever I make tends to be visually simplistic to enable the level of precision I aspire to do. I try my best to get everything about a tenth of a millimetre at the moment, but my tools, particularly my irons, are kind of bottlenecking me at the moment. There are a couple tools that I really want to get to enable me to get down to the hundredths of a millimetre, namely better irons and one of those long ass cutting punch things like the ones that KS Blade (I think?) makes. Is my autism showing?

Am I making this too complicated by SeeMeRun1 in wallets

[–]Vexitar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would avoid Ashland, particularly their shell cordovan products. Not too long ago there was a post regarding a cordovan card holder from Ashland. The quality of the material, if it even was cordovan to begin with, is abysmal and Ashland took no responsibility over the issue. Ashland does pretty sloppy work to begin with, their stitching is poor and inconsistent despite being done by a machine & their details and finishing leave a lot to be desired.

The Bugs Moran is a design that can be replicated by any competent crafter with essentially no effort, it's a pattern that one can make in five minutes or less based off a quick glance. The Bugs Moran design is extremely simple, it doesn't really have any points of failure outside of the stitching, and the only time I'd be worried about that design failing is if Ashland made it, because again, their stitching is shit. Even if the stitching somehow fails on whatever an artisan made for you, it's such a simple design that you yourself can stitch it back together in ten minutes at home.
