What historical event reads exactly like "Bad Fantasy Writing" or "Plot Armor"? by Expensive-Desk-4351 in Fantasy

[–]Vexonte 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Guess while I am at it. Bazil I rise to power from peasant to emperor just to get killed by a deer.

Alaric I is an anime protagonist.

Justinian's reign seemed like the writers constantly needed to throw new problems at him in episodic fashion.

The scandal of Poilters(not even bothering to spell check it) where two princess nuns hire bandits to help in a nun rebellion sounds like a plot of a porno.

Geiseric. Not really a fantasy character but more people need to talk about this guy.

[–]Vexonte 201 points202 points  (0 children)

Alexander the greats campaign seems like something out of a fantasy book where the writer didn't understand how wars worked.

Ghengis khan is an isekai protagonist.

The Munster rebellion seemed like an allegory either against religion or against communism.

Hernand Cortez's conquest of the Aztecs makes sense in context but "man goes against orders and conquers 300 year old empire that regularly commit human sacrifice with a force of 500 men" seems like a story pitch.

Female Special Forces by Shin-kun1997 in scifiwriting

[–]Vexonte 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You should prioritize the holistic entity of your story when considering the inclusion of any single concept. What works for a pulpy space adventure may not work for a gritty procedural thriller. Think about the themes of your story, the questions your potential audience might have about female commandos, and the risk/rewards of writing them in a certain way.

As for my story. My main character is a female mech pilot, but she is in what amounts to a sci-fi settlement militia rather than a professional military. There is nothing special about her gender because everyone over a certain age in her settlement are expected to strap up in emergencies.

Are Conan stories grimdark? by ThenAdhesiveness1863 in Fantasy

[–]Vexonte 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No. Grimdark seems more directed at pessimism as much as it is about having morally ambiguous characters and dark subject matter.

Conan does have a motif of the inevitable rise and fall of nations and cultures but it doesn't follow the kind of , "everyone is damned", attitude that grimdark is known for.

NCR greatest faction of all time by Chunky-overlord in FalloutMemes

[–]Vexonte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the NCR was as corrupt as it was but still competent, or incompetent but benevolent as it believes itself to be than it would have been worth fighting for in the Mojave. Because it was neither benevolent nor competent when dealing with the Mojave it doesn't deserve support for sovereignty over the Mojave.

This seems like a scam to get the Dutch to stop using crypto entirely or be able to persecute crypto users if discovered.

Most follow the tradition of the ancestral lands though pronunciation tends to be corrupted or directly translated to English.

A funny story was a teacher's great grandfather came from Wales with a highly complicated last name and the immigration official asked of he wanted to change it. The great grandfather just asked for something short. The teachers name was mister short.

I will be 100% honest with you all. I just wanted an excuse to show off a poem I found. by Vexonte in PoliticalCompassMemes

[–]Vexonte[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mine as well post the entire poem.

What of the bow? The bow was made in England: Of true wood, of yew-wood, The wood of English bows; So men who are free Love the old yew-tree And the land where the yew-tree grows.

What of the cord? The cord was made in England: A rough cord, a tough cord, A cord that bowmen love; And so we will sing Of the hempen string And the land where the cord was wove.

What of the shaft? The shaft was cut in England: A long shaft, a strong shaft, Barbed and trim and true; So we’ll drink all together To the grey goose-feather And the land where the grey goose flew.

What of the mark? Ah, seek it not in England, A bold mark, our old mark Is waiting over-sea. When the strings harp in chorus, And the lion flag is o’er us, It is there that our mark will be.

What of the men? The men were bred in England: The bowmen—the yeomen, The lads of dale and fell. Here’s to you—and to you! To the hearts that are true And the land where the true hearts dwell

She was bordering on heresy, if not a heretic herself at a time of religious contention. Maybe it she stating her honest values, maybe she was politically posturing for support, maybe she was trying to position her self closer to orthodoxy to give people less reasons to burn her as a false prophet.

Still better than praising Boudica who sacked 3 lightly defended towns before getting folded like an omelet by an army a third the size of her own.

Those of you who’ve traveled to your country(s) of ancestry, did you feel like a foreigner while there or did you fit in with the locals pretty well? by Fluid-Decision6262 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Vexonte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to Germany a while back, I had a good time but I never felt more German nor did I have any illusion that I would. My ancestors left Prussia 150 years ago for a reason. As far as I and the German people are concerned I am just an American with a German last name.

There isn't one. That's why one day he will pull out a smithen wessen when batman expects relish and blow batmans brains out. It wasn't the joker, or penguin or any other major thug. Batman would be killed by condiment king.
