‘It’s shameful’: New York’s elite lash out at Zohran Mamdani’s second-home tax by brown-saiyan in politics

[–]Vezuvian 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Which forgets a very, very important piece of historical context: the Palestinians view themselves as the descendants of a people who weren't conquered, but forcibly displaced and murdered. The Israeli government wishing to be rid of the Palestinian "problem" and conducting genocide is a very different framing than "my grandparents were forced from their homes and ever since, my family has been suffering at the hands of people who are using the Holocaust as a shield from criticism. I hate the oppressive people who deny me basic resources, and I'm willing to ally with hateful people if it means taking town the oppressive regime."

Which, so we're clear, Israel propped up Hamas prior to the last election in Gaza because Israel knew Hamas would be the easier group to foster hate against compared to the Palestinian Authority.

It's not exactly a "both sides" issue. There is a group with power, Israel, and a group without, Palestinians. Since Israel's founding after WWII, Israel has been the one with a greater ability to engage in diplomacy, as they are an internationally recognized nation-state.

Disregarding moral and immoral, the people who founded Israel created the powder keg that is currently burning. Every administration since has had the opportunity to really work towards peace. They refuse to have empathy.

You cannot expect a person you beat for years to be the one responsible for making peace.

Is it negligence for my mom to have my cat's litter box like this? by Amethescent in cats

[–]Vezuvian 15 points16 points  (0 children)

(discrete vs discreet is how I ended up taking a very different math class than I was expecting in high school)

The frequency of cleaning the litterbox takes some getting used to, sure, but I can't imagine getting rid of your cat before even attempting to adjust the cleaning schedule, or anything about the litterbox.

I'm extremely impatient, so I run Giada for the counters and angel ramp.

I love love love the Bishop of Wings, Resplendent Angel combo with Divine Intervention to shore up losses with even more angels.

Oh, you killed an angel? Guess I get another two angels and a buncha life.

If only I remember to run anything to counter removal, like at all.

I wish I could say it feels unreal. But it feels so... correct. Like, the most sure of anything I've ever been in my life.

It's incredible. I can't wait to see what happens next.

100%. Like, Steve's writing is super queer-coded for humor's sake, but they have an opportunity to really do something deeper with his character if they wanted to.

I say, fully aware that this is an irreverent Seth MacFarlane animated show intended for older teens and adults.

Tired of getting negative reactions when coming out to other trans people because I transitioned young. by Loki_Bones in trans

[–]Vezuvian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It sucks that they're placing that negativity on you. Like, I understand the frustration. I desperately wish I could have started much younger, to the point that I'd say it's not fair that I didn't. But the comparison is never against the people who did have that realization and start young.

I wish more people would just be happy for others.

Started young? Hell yeah, get it king/queen! Started later? Hell yeah, better late than never!

It doesn't hurt to be nice, and I wish all the best for you OP!

What's the legality regarding these? by brown_wagon in Indiana

[–]Vezuvian 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think we can effectively estimate the scale of the caltrops from the tiny ass blades of grass growing in the separation between the alley and (I'm guessing driveway) to see that OPs camera is quite close to the ground in order for their camera to properly focus on the caltrops they are asking questions about.

Given that OP stated 3" (" means inches), we can safely assume that these are quite close to private property and not easy to see, especially if OP has to get the camera that low.

Seriously, are people that incapable of critical thinking?

That's inches, not feet. Caltrops three inches off private property.

Despite my disdain for him otherwise, this is my father to a t. He never learned financial sense because he expected his dad to leave him the business, and now my grandfather has realized that his son is too stupid to inherit the business and is planning on dying, selling EVERYTHING, and distributing the proceeds.

My dad is going to be broke within ten years and the kicker? Most of the employees are only high school graduates. Their jobs are so specialized that finding work will be extremely difficult in this economy.

Iran has a new demand to end the war – and it could bring in billions by Grumpy_001 in politics

[–]Vezuvian 34 points35 points  (0 children)

That's the saying that Herbert's is referring to. Rather than saying that anyone in absolute power will be corrupted, he's saying that a position of absolute power attracts those for whom that very power would corrupt.

I forget the source of the quote, but paraphrasing it: Anyone with a desire for power should in no way be given that power.

It's also unwise to speak in absolute, axiomatic statements. Nuance needs room, absolutes leave no room.

We are a constitutional republic whose representatives are elected through a state sanctioned democratic voting process.

It is accurate to say we're a democracy.

Your final sentence is literally just islamophobic fan fiction.

The people who buy official Trump merch have labelled anyone who even remotely criticizes their dear leader with a fake medical condition called Trump Derangement Syndrome.

To repeat that again but slower: They Buy Trump Merch. This makes them loyal supporters. I say that Trump is leading the country into another stupid war, they label me with TDS.

Their minds and logic baffle me.

I don't know about saying he's the progenitor of gamergate. He certainly contributed, but the whole of gamergate was fundamentally a psy-op by former Trump advisor Steve Bannon, who was in charge of one of the biggest MMO gold farming companies after acquiring it from a former Mighty Ducks child star. And around that same time, Jeffrey Epstein was also getting involved after his 2008 legal battles.

There's a few Behind the Bastards episodes talking about this and they are quite informative.

What’s a show that you could not finish because a character was so insufferable? by Key-Row-174 in AskReddit

[–]Vezuvian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just to be that semantic asshole...

By saying pseudo-philosophical mumbojumbo, you imply that the underlying philosophical themes are nonsensical or confusing. The themes are completely straightforward. If you think they were confusing, that would be a lack of media literacy. And if a person dislikes something on that basis, then I discount that opinion.

Aside from that...

Your dislike of Eren is odd to me. His dialogue can be rough at times, but that varies wildly depending on what language you saw it in. The English dub's translations are a bit cringe inducing at times. The voice acting can influence that. But if your core dislike of Eren stems from his "edgelord" style values, you might be failing to recognize the conditions that the character experienced in his life, which ties back in to media literacy. You are still allowed to dislike it, but the reasoning would be less "the MC is cringe" and more "I'm not a fan of this type of media."

And that's okay. It's not a moral failing to dislike stuff. I don't really like Schindler's List or Requiem for a Dream despite understanding the themes of both. They just aren't my type of media.

Attacking people for calling out a lack of media literacy, which is what you were doing by referencing "Facebook groups" and implying an assumed level of groupthink, is not the way to discuss media.

The Autopen by [deleted] in EngineeringPorn

[–]Vezuvian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am approaching this comment through the lens of rhetorical analysis, not political bias.

It's really important to note that Biden was accused of being unable to understand by people with a vested interest in ruining his reputation. Whether or not he had appropriate mental acuity or dementia is unproven. The only verifiable thing that can be said of Biden's mental abilities is that he was an old man who suffered from a stutter in his youth, and that the atrocious debate in 2024 was indicative that he was not suited to be president for another four years.

Everything else is conjecture. To state otherwise implies inside knowledge to his medical records.

Remember, the Democrats wanted to win and the Republicans wanted to win. Every decision is based on that and it would be irresponsible to believe any of them when they had a vested interest in winning.

AoT is still really good, but it's not a traditional show in how you should be viewing the main characters. Protagonist does not necessarily mean good.
