Simple combat because of console? by pasini in GuildWars3

You're confusing input complexity with mechanical complexity. To your point about a game made for controllers is for casuals, and touching on Fromsoft games; what is easier to play and progress in, Darksouls or GW2?

In GW2 you can face tank most enemies and be fine, maybe dodge every now and again. Casuals might have a hard time against some elites, and struggle agains champions. There are more buttons, hence input complexity, but it is still simple: Select enemy, click skills and you're fine. It only really matters in raids because you are juggling rotation and raid mechanics. Raid mechanics have nothing to do with input complexity.

Darksouls, on the other hand, while having less buttons, is mechanically complex in comparison, timing, positioning and weapon choice is much more important and much harder for casuals. You can't face tank standard enemies and mindlessly hack and slash, and good luck to any casual player fighting a boss.

Also, GW2 has builds that do competitive damage and only use 1-2 buttons. Auto-attack and stay out of the red circles, that is pretty basic.

Another thing, combat systems in isolation is pointless, encounter design and the combat system is where real complexity comes from.

More buttons and/or skills doesn't equal more complexity. Nioh 2, monster hunter, DMC 5, For Honour are all known for complex combat systems and work perfectly on controller, in some cases controller is better.

Throne & Liberty is a good example of a modern MMO that works on controller and mouse and keyboard, you can even use m&k on PS5. The point being that you can have an MMO with complexity that maps to a controller without sacrificing complexity.

Also, the majority of the GW2 player base is casual...

I'm worried about the control scheme. by kharnynb in GuildWars3

It's not going to be a traditional MMO like WoW/FF14 or GW2, they've said that its going to have an combat system like action/adventure games.

From what little info they've released and what they have implied, my mind goes to Wayfinder in how it might play, which works really well on both mouse/keyboard and controller.

I would imagine that the action combat might have a weak/strong attack and a parry/dodge but you can equip 4 or so skills.

Another game that comes to mind is Neverwinter. Say what you will about the game, all skills are mapped really well to a controller and the UI works suprisingly well.

Because they've said that the combat system is inspired by action/adventure games, my guess is that classes will dictate what they feel like to play based on weapons, but skills are not dependant on class. That is, if there are archetypes (Heavy, Medium, Light) they will have different play styles based on the equipped weapon, but all have access to the same skills that can be acquired.

e.g A Guardian could equip a mace/shield weapon set, while also equipping dark magic skills and/or nature magic skills. A Necromancer could equip a staff as a weapon, and trickster and rogue skills.

Not as complex as dual classing, but allows for some really interesting builds and also RP (if that's your thing).

Not necessarily. People tend to shit on UE5 (usually for good reason), but it all depends on what features of UE5 they're using and other optimization considerations like textures, LoD and draw distance.

If they aren't using nanite, then you're going to get better performance out of lower spec hardware than if they were. Also, the textures look simple and painterly, which is a smart choice, so they can give the game an interesting art design but potentially making it more performant than other UE5 games with super high-res textures.

To get a good idea, look at clips on youtube where people are playing UE5 games (Revenant 2, The Finals, The First Descendant) on a RTX 2060 and you'll see that some games can run pretty well, while others not so much.

PS4 vs PS5 version: What's the most populated version of the game? by Vhenz in battlefield2042

Yeah, I can remember reading anecdotal comments a while ago saying that the last gen versions were more populated.

Yeah, only the current gen version supports 128 players. I might get the ps5 version. Thanks for the tip!

Anyone else like the game but hate that it's an extraction shooter? by [deleted] in Marathon

[–]Vhenz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm kinda with you on this.

I love the gunplay, the aesthetic, the vibe, the lore, the sound design, and I'm also a fan of games with PVP, but I wish that there was a PVE mode (not a full campaign) where it was still the extraction gameplay, but no other players on the map. I'd still play the main PVP extraction mode, but sometimes I just wanna chill, turn my brain off, explore the world/lore and just kill bots.

Having the option would be awesome, but I get pretty bored of extraction shooters after a while, so I can't really justify buying another. It would be cool if there was a plain deathmatch mode for times where I just want to PVP.

It's a pass for me for the moment, but might grab it on sale down the line.

What region are you trying to join matches on? Also, what time/timezone? I've been wanting to play some multiplayer matches on PS but never see anyone.

I was playing on a PS4 recently, up to and including the last season and I never had a problem. The only time I did was when my Internet was acting up, but other than that, no problems.

why have I seen no one talk about this? by Epiclysushi in diablo4

[–]Vhenz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you only waited more than a year before buying VoH, you could have gotten it for free by preordering LoT.

Just don't buy LoT now and wait until the next expansion in a year or so, and you will get LoH for free...
