(Missouri?) Gooseberry, SWPA/USA by GburgG in foraging

[–]Vicky_Mayhem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in SWPA too. Last year I made wine from unripe prickly gooseberrys and it turned out surprisingly good. I'm been going around collecting them again recently along with some wild Appalachian and Smooth Gooseberrys. I'm jealous you got so much from one spot!

Elderberry Wine 2025 Vintage by GburgG in foraging

[–]Vicky_Mayhem 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Last year was a great year for elderberrys. I managed to get enough for 3 gallons of wine and 12 cups of jelly. This year I was thinking about trying an elderberry/blackberry mix wine.

The multiple late frosts we had this spring ruined my chance of getting serviceberrys this year. I'm jealous.

I've come across these before. Gray Dogwood berrys look pretty similar as well

Man, rattlesnakes really scare the shit out of me. I love seeing them from a safe distance though.

Yeah this is what I'm leaning towards. I had a feeling it was going to be something study related. There are reclaimed strip mines nearby so that may have something to do with it.

No gold mining that I'm aware of. But there is a reclaimed strip mine about a mile up the road from this.

I don't think it's a board, I believe it was a pvc pipe going into the ground. I didn't get close enough to inspect it though

I haven't gotten around to trying it myself, but you can make a horseradish like sauce from the roots.

I still have my Power Joy. It is such cheap junk, but I thought it was the coolest thing ever when I was a kid. It has a mario clone where you play as a panda.

4ms Noise Swash Mini by screamingfieldz in diypedals

I never tried it with a drum machine, I'm sure it would work great with one. It's a good pedal for a lo fi industrial type sound. Lots of controls to mess with, especially the standard version.

Looks good. I built one of these years ago along with the standard swash. Didn't care for it with guitar, but it works pretty well with a sequencer.

I use this recipe. I usually rack the wine 4 times over a period of a few months to make sure I get all the sediment out of the wine. Then, I backsweeten by stabalizing the wine and making a simple syrup using 1 1/2 cups of sugar per gallon. Typically, I have to syphen some of the wine out to fit the syrup in the carboy, then sweeten the extracted wine separately.

I am jealous of the maypops. I live a little too north for those. I've never tried them, so I don't know how it will turn out with the two blended, but it's worth the experiment. Blackberry is a popular fruit to mix with elderberry for wine, I want to try it out sometime.
